Election Day 2021: A referendum on President Biden’s agenda
Annie Andersen: WHILE, PRESIDENT BIDEN STRUGGLED TO STAY AWAKE AT A CLIMATE CONVENTION OVERSEAS – HE WILL WANT TO KEEP HIS ATTENTION STATESIDE TUESDAY AS MILLIONS HEAD TO THE POLLS IN WHAT SOME CALL A REFERENDUM OF HIS PRESIDENCY. WHILE THERE ARE RACES IN SEVERAL STATES – THE FOCUS IS ON VIRGINIA. THE HISTORICALLY PURPLE STATE – BLUE IN RECENT ELECTIONS – IS SEEING PLENTY OF RED THIS NOVEMBER.
Glenn Youngkin: “Crowds are like this everywhere we go.”
Annie Andersen: Recent polling has the gubernatorial candidates, Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin, neck and neck.
Stephen Farnsworth: “what we’re seeing in this election is that Virginia looked a lot bluer during the Trump years than it’s looking after the Trump presidency.”
Annie Andersen: IN THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL RACE, BIDEN GOT 69 PERCENT OF THE VOTE IN VIRGINIA’S LARGEST COUNTY. BUT NOW BIDEN’S APPROVAL RATING STATEWIDE – SITS AT JUST 48 PERCENT. POLITICAL EXPERT Stephen Farnsworth from the University of Mary washington SAYS ITS BECAUSE PEOPLE WANT TO SEE MORE FROM THE CURRENT COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF.
Stephen Farnsworth “You’ve really created an environment where Republicans can claim the Democrats can’t govern, and Biden has given them or the congressional Democrats more precisely have given them the terms of providing some evidence for that argument”
Annie Andersen: President Biden, for his part, says he isn’t concerned
Joe Biden: ”And, by the way, look, the polls are going to up and down and up and down. They were high early, then they got medium, then they went back up, and now they’re low.”
Donald Trump: ”He’ll make Virginia really the envy of the world, you watch.”
Annie Andersen: THEN THERE’S THE TRUMP FACTOR
Stephen Farnsworth: ”You sound too much like Donald Trump, and then you energize the Democratic base…/ and if you end up embracing the Trump message too, visibly. you run the risk of losing another part of the Republican coalition that you need to win.”>>
Annie Andersen: Youngkin is staying mum on Trump…instead focusing on an issue where Virginia GOP voters are united.
Stephen Farnsworth: ”one of the things that you’ve seen with the Youngkin campaign is an ability to really adjust the narrative/ if you look at the most recent surveys you’re seeing that education has really popped as an important issue in the minds of a lot of voters.”
Annie Andersen: Do you think President Biden’s poll numbers will impact these elections? Who do you think will pull ahead?
