The NYPD has gone over budget with its officers’ overtime again and again.
For the 2022 fiscal year, the budget for NYPD overtime was $607 million.
But state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says the NYPD spent $762 million.
Now, with about a $453 million budget for the 2023 fiscal year, a local outlet called The City is projecting the department will end up spending $820 million.
This comes as the force faces an officer shortage.
More officers resigned from the NYPD in 2022 than at any other time in the last 20 years – some of them, reportedly going to Florida. There, Governor DeSantis has promoted perks like sign-on bonuses.
And Mayor Adams doesn’t seem to be budging much on the budget. He presented his preliminary spending plan for the 2024 fiscal year, which begins in July…and the number is about the same for overtime.
