Galloping into the spotlight: The UK Hobby Horse competition takes off

A few equestrian sporting events were featured at this year’s Olympic Games, but there’s a new horse related competition in the United Kingdom. The country recently held its first hobby horse championships.

What began as a fun activity has evolved into a full-fledged sport. Those involved had to leap and gallop over obstacles during the contest, with the event being organized by the U.K. Hobby Horse Association.

The toy has been around for centuries, but only in recent years, especially during the pandemic, has the sport’s popularity taken off. People cite accessibility, affordability and inclusivity as reasons they take part, letting younger riders showcase their creativity and athleticism.

Many participants say hobby horsing has given them a community to be part of, especially those who may feel left out of traditional sports. It’s even noted for being a positive impact on those with autism and ADHD.

The first U.S. Hobby Horse Championships were held earlier this year in Michigan. More than 100 competitors gathered for the event last month.
