GM, NVIDIA team up to revolutionize vehicles through artificial intelligence

  • General Motors and NVIDIA have announced a major partnership to revolutionize the future of vehicles, factories and robotics using AI, simulation and advanced computing. The partnership also focuses on advancing autonomous vehicles with NVIDIA’s DRIVE AGX platform, processing up to one quadrillion operations per second.
  • GM will leverage NVIDIA’s Omniverse platform to create digital twins of assembly lines, enabling virtual testing and reducing downtime.
  • This partnership comes as other global automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, Rivian and BYD, also team up with NVIDIA for driver assistance technologies.

Full Story

Two worlds collided with an announcement on Tuesday, March 18, as auto giant General Motors (GM) and artificial intelligence leader NVIDIA joined forces in a groundbreaking partnership. This collaboration marks a major step in the automotive and tech industries, reportedly creating new opportunities for innovation and positioning the U.S. to keep pace with global competitors.

Transforming technology?

The companies are teaming up to revolutionize the future of vehicles, factories and robotics by leveraging AI, simulation and cutting-edge computing technologies. GM will use NVIDIA’s advanced platforms to supercharge its factory planning and robotics, paving the way for greater manufacturing efficiency and safety.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra emphasized the long-standing relationship with NVIDIA. She stated, “By merging technology with human ingenuity, we unlock new levels of innovation in vehicle manufacturing and beyond.”

The collaboration will also reportedly enhance driver assistance and in-cabin safety features, making vehicles safer and more intuitive for consumers.

Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, called this partnership a leap into the future, saying, “The era of physical AI is here.”

He added that, with GM, NVIDIA is “transforming transportation from vehicles to the factories where they are made.”

This announcement comes as Chinese automakers rapidly move to incorporate DeepSeek into their fleets. DeepSeek is an AI company aiming to enhance voice control, web search, messaging and mapping. GM’s collaboration with NVIDIA is reportedly a response to this growing global competition.

Next-generation autonomous vehicles

GM will use NVIDIA’s Omniverse platform to create digital twins of assembly lines. This will allow GM to virtually test production models, reducing downtime and boosting efficiency. Additionally, robotics used in material handling and precision welding will be trained to elevate safety and performance to new levels.

The partnership will also focus on autonomous vehicles. GM plans to use NVIDIA’s DRIVE AGX platform, an AI-powered computer capable of processing up to one quadrillion operations per second. This powerful system will accelerate the development of autonomous vehicles, far surpassing current models that rely on AI chips processing up to 254 trillion operations per second.

Shifting landscape of self-driving vehicles

In 2024, Straight Arrow News reported that GM was shutting down its robotaxi program as part of a shift in its self-driving strategy, focusing more on benefiting personal vehicles. The company had previously used NVIDIA chips to power their Cruise robotaxis.

Other major automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, Rivian and Chinese EV maker BYD, have also partnered with NVIDIA to integrate its driver assistance software, signaling a growing trend in the industry.

TWO WORLDS COLLIDED WITH TUESDAY’S ANNOUNCEMENT, AS AUTO GIANT GENERAL MOTORS AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE LEADER NVIDIA JOINED FORCES IN A GROUNDBREAKING PARTNERSHIP.

THIS ISN’T JUST A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE—IT’S A CRUCIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR AMERICA TO CATCH UP WITH THE GLOBAL COMPETITION.

THE COMPANIES ARE TEAMING UP TO REVOLUTIONIZE THE FUTURE OF VEHICLES, FACTORIES AND ROBOTS BY USING A-I, SIMULATION AND CUTTING EDGE COMPUTING…. COLLABORATING TO BUILD CUSTOM AI SYSTEMS POWERED BY NVIDIA’S PLATFORMS TO SUPERCHARGE GM’S FACTORY PLANNING AND ROBOTICS.

GENERAL MOTORS CEO SAYS THE COMPANY HAS HAD A LONGSTANDING PARTNERSHIP WITH NVIDIA, LEVERAGING THEIR PLATFORMS FOR A-I MODEL TRAINING. SAYING “By merging technology with human ingenuity, we unlock new levels of innovation in vehicle manufacturing and beyond.”

ON TOP OF THAT, GM WILL LEVERAGE NVIDIA TO BRING DRIVER ASSISTANCE AND IN CABIN SAFETY FEATURES TO DRIVERS ON THE ROAD.

THE FOUNDER AND CEO OF NVIDIA SAYS “THE ERA OF PHYSICAL A-I IS HERE”  ADDING WITH G-M THEY ARE “TRANSFORMING TRANSPORTATION FROM VEHICLES TO THE FACTORIES WHERE THEY ARE MADE.”

GM AND NVIDIA’S ANNOUNCEMENT COMES AMID A FRENZY OF AT LEAST 20 CHINESE AUTOMAKERS MOVING TO INCORPORATE DEEPSEEK INTO THEIR FLEET. THE AI COMPANY AIMS TO ENHANCE VOICE CONTROL, WEB SEARCH, MESSAGING AND MAPPING.

GM IS TAKING A BIG LEAP WITH NVIDIA, USING THE COMPANY’S OMNIVERSE PLATFORM TO CREATE IDENTICAL DIGITAL ASSEMBLY LINES, ALLOWING VIRTUAL TESTING TO SLASH DOWNTIME AND SUPERCHARGE EFFICIENCY.

WHILE AT THE SAME TIME ROBOTICS IN MATERIAL HANDLING AND PRECISION WELDING WILL BE TRAINED TO PUSH SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE TO NEW HEIGHTS.

GM WILL ALSO BUILD THE CARS OF THE FUTURE WITH NVIDIA’S DRIVE AGX PLATFORM–A COMPUTER THAT CAN PROCESS UP TO ONE QUADRILLION OPERATIONS PER SECOND, SPEEDING UP THE DEVELOPMENT OF AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES.

THIS MOVES IN CONTRAST TO CURRENT AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES, WHICH MOSTLY RELY ON A-I CHIPS CAPABLE OF PROCESSING UP TO 254 TRILLION OPERATIONS PER SECOND.

IN 2024, STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS REPORTED THAT GENERAL MOTORS WAS SHUTTING DOWN ITS ROBOTAXI PROGRAM AS PART OF A SHIFT IN ITS SELF-DRIVING STRATEGY TO FOCUS MORE ON BENEFITING PERSONAL VEHICLES. THE COMPANY HAD ALSO USED NVIDIA CHIPS TO POWER THEIR CRUISE ROBOTAXIS

MERCEDES BENZ, RIVIAN AND CHINESE EV MAKER B-Y-D ALL HAVE PARTNERED WITH NVIDIA TO GARNER THEIR DRIVER ASSISTANCE SOFTWARE.
