Green Day’s music is getting a big-screen twist. The punk rock band is inspiring a new comedy film, “New Year’s Rev.”

Variety revealed Monday, Feb. 10, that Green Day is developing a film produced by Live Nation Productions. The production company has worked on major music-driven projects like “Love, Lizzo” and “A Star Is Born.”

According to the film’s logline, “New Year’s Rev” will follow a rowdy road trip based on Green Day’s early years living in a tour van.

Billie Joe Armstrong reflects on van life

Lead vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong spoke to Variety about the inspiration behind the film.

“Van days rule,” Armstrong said. “You drive all night on no sleep, then play a show for 10 kids in a basement 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of.”

Cast and production details

The film is already in production in Oklahoma.

Mason Thames, Kyler Coffman and Ryan Foust are set to play the lead trio. “The Office” stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey will also appear in the film, along with Ignacia Diaz-Silverado and Keen Ruffalo, son of actor Mark Ruffalo.

Casting is underway for background roles in Oklahoma City. The production team is looking for extras, including country or blues bands and skateboarders.
