Growing US nuclear power resurgence reaches the nation’s heartland

The Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa, which was closed in 2020 due to damage from a powerful windstorm, may soon see a revival. NextEra Energy, the utility provider that owns the plant, is considering restarting operations to meet the rising electricity demand in the United States.

NextEra Energy CEO John Ketchum said a thorough review of potential risks would first be required. The company emphasized it wants to ensure that plans to reopen the plant are carried out “in a way that is essentially risk free” before it would be possible to move forward.

This consideration aligns with a broader trend across the country of a comeback for this energy source.

Recently, there has been discussion about bringing Pennsylvania’s Three Mile Island nuclear reactor back online. This reactor, known for one of the nation’s most infamous nuclear accidents, is now being looked at as a potential contributor to the renewed interest in nuclear energy.

These nuclear initiatives are part of a larger strategy as the U.S. seeks ways to reduce emissions while addressing the growing energy demands from data centers and AI engines. Industry experts predict that the U.S. will need to install more than 10 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity in the near future, which is enough to power approximately seven and a half million homes.

IOWA’S DUANE ARNOLD ENERGY CENTER WAS INITIALLY CLOSED IN 20-20,
AFTER A POWERFUL WINDSTORM DAMAGED THE PLANT’S COOLING TOWERS

BUT AMID RISING U.S. ELECTRICITY DEMAND, UTILITY PROVIDER NEXT-ERA ENERGY IS CONSIDERING RESTARTING THE PLANT.

THE COMPANY’S CEO SAYING A THOROUGH REVIEW OF POTENTIAL RISKS IS STILL NEEDED TO SEE IF THIS PLAN IS FEASIBLE.

IT’S A TREND WE’RE SEEING ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO WE LEARNED PENNSYLVANIA’S THREE MILE ISLAND NUCLEAR REACTOR MIGHT BE COMING BACK ONLINE.

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE FROM ONE OF THE NATION’S MOST INFAMOUS NUCLEAR ACCIDENTS – TO AN EXAMPLE OF RENEWED INTEREST IN THIS ENERGY SOURCE.

THESE RECENT INITIATIVES COME AS THE U-S LOOKS FOR WAYS TO REDUCE EMISSIONS WHILE ALSO MEETING THE GROWING ENERGY DEMANDS OF DATA CENTERS AND AI ENGINES.

TO DO THIS, INDUSTRY EXPERTS PREDICT THE U.S. WILL SOON NEED TO INSTALL MORE THAN 10 GIGAWATTS OF NEW NUCLEAR CAPACITY-

EQUIVALENT TO THE ENERGY REQUIRED FOR POWERING UPWARDS OF SEVEN AND A HALF MILLION HOMES.
