SIMONE DEL ROSARIO: BUSINESSES ARE EXHALING NOW THAT MUCH OF THE COUNTRY IS OPENING BACK UP. BUT A SURPRISING NUMBER OF COMPANIES DIDN’T MAKE IT THROUGH THE PANDEMIC IN ONE PIECE. HERE ARE THE BANKRUPTCIES THAT CAUGHT MY EYE IN THIS WEEK’S FIVE FOR FRIDAY.
AT NUMBER FIVE – PIER ONE IMPORTS WAS IN TROUBLE BEFORE THE PANDEMIC EVEN BEGAN. THEY FILED FOR BANKRUPTCY IN EARLY 2020 AND HAD CLOSED NEARLY HALF OF ITS STORES. COVID-19 WAS THE FINAL NAIL IN ITS COFFIN. THEY HAD TO SCRAP BANKRUPTCY ALTOGETHER AND LIQUIDATE. YOU WON’T SEE PIER 1 IN SHOPPING CENTERS ANYMORE, THE BUYER MADE IT AN ONLINE-ONLY OPERATION.
COMING IN AT NUMBER 4 “how do they do it? cici’s pizza. how do they do it?” NOT SO WELL APPARENTLY. DELIVERY PIZZA HAD IT MADE DURING THE PANDEMIC. BUT CICI’S FAMOUS $5 ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT PIZZA BUFFET DIDN’T TRANSLATE AS WELL FOR TAKEOUT AND THE CHAIN FILED FOR CHAPTER 11. NEW OWNERS NOW OPERATE THE SLIMMED DOWN RESTAURANT CHAIN AND ARE BETTING ON A RETURN TO DINE-IN SERVICE.
IN THE THREE SPOT, WE HAVE GOLD’S GYM. UNLIKE MANY ON THE LIST, BEFORE THE PANDEMIC THE FRANCHISE HAD ITS STRONGEST-EVER YEAR OF GROWTH. BUT SOCIAL DISTANCING AND CLOSURES HIT ITS BUSINESS LIKE A 400-POUND DUMBBELL. AFTER FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY, EUROPEAN FITNESS COMPANY R-S-G BOUGHT THE CHAIN FOR 100-MILLION. NOW, IT’S BRINGING A NIGHT-CLUB GYM VIBE TO THE U-S.
AT NUMBER 2 – HERTZ. YOU’D NEVER THINK THE RENTAL CAR COMPANY RECENTLY EMERGED FROM BANKRUPTCY IF YOU CONSIDER THE CELEBS THEY HIRE. BUT HERTZ WAS ONE OF THE FIRST MAJOR COMPANIES TO FILE CHAPTER 11 WHEN TRAVEL WAS HALTED. AND NOW? HAVE YOU TRIED RENTING A CAR RECENTLY? THE FIRM IS BENEFITTING FROM SURGING PRICES FOR RENTAL AND USED CARS. EVEN THE BANKRUPTCY JUDGE WAS IMPRESSED BY THIS TURNAROUND.
AND IN OUR TOP SPOT, GUITAR CENTER. THE SHUTDOWN WAS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO PICK UP A NEW INSTRUMENT BUT SHOPPERS AVOIDED THE MALLS LIKE – WELL – THE PLAGUE. UNFORTUNATELY FOR GUITAR CENTER, MOST OF ITS HUNDREDS OF LOCATIONS WERE INSIDE OF THEM. POST BANKRUPTCY, THE COURT APPROVED A PLAN THAT WIPED OUT MORE THAN $800 MILLION IN DEBT AND IN A YEAR, GUITAR CENTER WENT FROM FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY – TO FILING PAPERWORK TO GO PUBLIC.
DOZENS MORE COMPANIES WENT BELLY UP BECAUSE OF COVID. BUT BANKRUPTCY IS GIVING MOST A NEW CHAPTER IN POST COVID LIFE. I HOPE THE WEEKEND GIVES YOU KNEW LIFE. I’M SIMONE DEL ROSARIO IN NEW YORK FOR JUST BUSINESS. SEE YOU MONDAY!
