Honoring their bravery: Biden signs bill awarding medals to police who defended Capitol Jan 6th
Annie Andersen: A Congressional Gold Medal is the highest honor Congress can give.
Now all of the law enforcement officers who responded to the January 6th riot at the Capitol will be honored.
Under the terms of the bill, the Treasury Department will create four medals which will be on display with the Capitol Police, DC Metro Police, the Architect of the Capitol and the Smithsonian Institute.
President Biden signed the request Thursday..thanking law enforcement for their bravery on January 6.
President Joe Biden: ”These were tragic hours back then. You stood in the breach. You did your duty. Your duty to defend the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. The events that transpired were surprising, but not your character or your courage in all your men and women.”
Annie Andersen: The bill to give the medals passed the Senate unanimously.
In the House, 21 Republicans voted against it.
Five police officers who were there that day have died following the insurrection.
More than a hundred were injured during the riot.
Many are still undergoing treatment for the emotional and physical toll of that day.
4 officers testified at the first January 6th select committee hearing, sharing their experiences from January 6, saying they are still reliving it.
Speaking of the select committee..The Hill reports the committee is preparing quite a few subpoenas to start gathering evidence.
Still to be determined if Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Trump supporter Congressman Jim Jordan will be subpoenaed to testify.
