US IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT DEPORTED A MOTHER AND HER FOUR CHILDREN INCLUDING NEWBORN TWINS FROM TEXAS TO REYNOSA, MEXICO EARLIER THIS MONTH.
CHRISTINA SALAZAR IS 23 YEARS OLD SHE WAS BORN IN MEXICO AND MARRIED HER HUSBAND, WHO IS A US CITIZEN IN 2019. SHE AND HER KIDS WERE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY ON DECEMBER 11TH.
SALAZAR’S HUSBAND, FEDERICO ARELLANO JR SAYS HE’S FIGHTING TO GET HIS FAMILY BACK.
FREDERICO TELLS KHOU 11 NEWS IN HOUSTON HIS WIFE AND TWO OLDER CHILDREN WERE AWAITING IMMIGRATION HEARINGS, AND THAT SALAZAR MISSED A HEARING JUST A FEW WEEKS AFTER HAVING AN EMERGENCY CESAREAN SECTION TO DELIVER THEIR TWINS.
FREDERICO SAYS THEY CALLED THE IMMIGRATION COURT TO LET THEM KNOW SHE WAS RECOVERING FROM SURGERY AND THAT THE HEARING WOULD BE RESCHEDULED.
IMMIGRATION AUTHORITIES THEN CALLED THE FAMILY AND TOLD THEM TO MEET AT A LOCATION TO DISCUSS THEIR CASE – WHEN SALAZAR AND ALL FOUR OF HER CHILDREN WERE ARRESTED.
THE TWINS ARE US CITIZENS SINCE THEY WERE BORN IN THE COUNTRY.
THE FAMILY’S ATTORNEY SAYS THEY DIDN’T HAVE LEGAL REPRESENTATION WHEN THEY SHOWED UP FOR THE MEETING, ULTIMATELY LEADING TO ARREST.
“THIS CASE SHOULDN’T HAVE GONE TO THIS EXTREME,” IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY ISAIAS TORRES SAID. “THERE WERE OPTIONS, LEGAL OPTIONS, THAT WERE AVAILABLE AND HE WAS NOT GIVEN THOSE OPPORTUNITIES.”
THE FAMILY’S ATTORNEY SAYS THEY ARE FILING A COMPLAINT WITH THE INSPECTOR GENERAL AND WORKING THROUGH LEGAL OPTIONS TO GET CHRISTINA AND HER CHILDREN BACK TO THE UNITED STATES.
