A HISTORIC OCEAN LINER, THE SS UNITED STATES, MAY SOON FIND ITS FINAL RESTING PLACE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE GULF OF MEXICO, AS OFFICIALS IN OKALOOSA COUNTY, FLORIDA, HAVE APPROVED A TENTATIVE DEAL TO PURCHASE THE SHIP AND TRANSFORM IT INTO THE WORLD’S LARGEST ARTIFICIAL REEF.
THE PLAN IS DEPENDENT ON RESOLVING A COURT-ORDERED MEDIATION OVER RENT AND DOCKAGE FEES, BUT IF FINALIZED, IT WOULD GIVE THE ICONIC SHIP A NEW PURPOSE AFTER YEARS OF UNCERTAINTY.
AT OVER 1,000 FEET LONG, THE SS UNITED STATES WAS ONCE A SYMBOL OF AMERICAN ENGINEERING AND STRENGTH. WHEN IT SET SAIL IN 1952, IT SHATTERED THE RECORD FOR THE FASTEST TRANSATLANTIC CROSSING BY A PASSENGER LINER, REACHING AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 36 KNOTS. THE SHIP FERRIED IMMIGRANTS, HOLLYWOOD STARS, AND HEADS OF STATE, EARNING A PLACE IN MARITIME HISTORY.
THE SHIP WAS DECOMMISSIONED IN 1969 AND HAS SINCE STRUGGLED TO FIND A PERMANENT HOME. MULTIPLE PRIVATE INVESTORS ATTEMPTED REDEVELOPMENT PROJECTS, BUT ALL EFFORTS FELL THROUGH. FOR NEARLY 30 YEARS, THE VESSEL HAS REMAINED DOCKED IN PHILADELPHIA NOW, THE PROPOSED PLAN AIMS TO SINK THE SHIP INTENTIONALLY OFF THE COAST OF FLORIDA, CREATING AN ARTIFICIAL REEF. LOCAL OFFICIALS ARE OPTIMISTIC THAT THE PROJECT WILL ATTRACT DIVERS, TOURISTS, AND FISHING ENTHUSIASTS, GENERATING MILLIONS IN TOURISM REVENUE.
THE CONVERSION IS EXPECTED TO COST MORE THAN $10 MILLION AND TAKE UP TO 1.5 YEARS TO COMPLETE.
