Massachusetts town takes legal action against resident projecting Trump sign

Fines of reportedly $100 per day and a cease-and-desist order are apparently not stopping a Massachusetts resident from projecting a “Trump 2024” symbol onto the town of Hanson’s water tower. As a result, city officials said they will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 16, to see what further legal action they can take against the resident they say is in violation of a city ordinance.

Hanson officials saw the political sign first displayed on Friday, Oct. 11, as a local resident shined the light on the tower. To dim the symbolic endorsement of former President Donald Trump, the town has resorted to using spotlights, including two from nearby communities, shining them on the tower from dusk until dawn.

Local officials say the $100 per day the resident is being fined likely won’t cover the overtime pay of city workers and other steps the city has taken to wash out the endorsement.

While the town’s administrator Lisa Green said that the city respects “everyone’s right to free speech,” the local government does not endorse political candidates, nor does it allow political signs on city property. Green argued that the display “mislead the public into believing that this activity is sanctioned or condoned by the town.”

However, a Hanson resident interviewed by WCVB Boston thinks the city’s efforts are a waste of time.

“I mean, there’s a lot of other issues to be concerned with while you’re out patrolling to make sure there’s not a projection on the tank,” Mike Smith, who lives nearby, said. “I mean, that’s foolish.”

The city is not sharing the identity of the person projecting the Trump sign.

FINES OF 100 DOLLARS A DAY AND A CEASE-AND-DESIST ORDER AREN’T STOPPING A MASSACHUSETTS RESIDENT FROM PROJECTING A “TRUMP 2024” SYMBOL ONTO THE TOWN OF HANSON’S WATER TOWER.

SO, CITY OFFICIALS SAY THEY’LL HOLD AN EMERGENCY MEETING TO SEE WHAT FURTHER LEGAL ACTION THEY CAN TAKE.

HANSON, MASSACHUSETTS, OFFICIALS SAW THE POLITICAL SIGN’S DISPLAY LAST WEEK AS A LOCAL RESIDENT SHINED THE LIGHT ONTO THE TOWER.

TO DIM THE TRUMP SYMBOL, THE TOWN HAS RESORTED TO USING SPOTLIGHTS, INCLUDING TWO FROM NEARBY COMMUNITIES, SHINING THEM ON THE TOWER FROM DUSK UNTIL DAWN.

OFFICIALS SAY THE 100 DOLLARS A DAY THE RESIDENT IS BEING FINED LIKELY WON’T COVER THE OVERTIME PAY OF CITY WORKERS AND OTHER STEPS THE CITY HAS TAKEN TO WASH OUT THE ENDORSEMENT.

WHILE THE TOWN’S ADMINISTRATOR LISA GREEN SAYS THE CITY RESPECTS “EVERYONE’S RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH” THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT DOES NOT ENDORSE POLITICAL CANDIDATES NOR ALLOW POLITICAL SIGNS ON CITY PROPERTY.

GREEN ARGUES THE PROJECTION “MISLEADS THE PUBLIC INTO BELIEVING THAT THIS ACTIVITY IS SANCTIONED OR CONDONED BY THE TOWN.

A HANSON RESIDENT INTERVIEWED BY W-C-V-B BOSTON THINKS THE CITY’S EFFORTS ARE A WASTE OF TIME.
