There are 15 days to go before NCAA tournament bids are handed out by the selection committee and there’s a lot of anxiety for teams on the bubble.
I’ve got a running list here on my little white board because a lot of things will change between now and Selection Sunday. I can add to it… or cross em off!
Saturday a couple teams will be playing for their NCAA tournament chances. Georgia and Texas are both on the bubble. If the Bulldogs can win in Austin, it would be their first road win in the conference all season, a big reason why they’re a bubble team.
Dawgs are coming off a massive win vs #3 Florida at home, but Mike White compares this matchup with his team’s loss to #1 Auburn a week ago.
“Auburn’s terrific,Texas is terrific hopefully we can do a lot of the same things, clean up some things but some of it’s going to depend on you know how Texas plays too and made shots and made free throws and all those things. But I really liked our approach at Auburn, how hard we played, how locked in we were, our resilience. We need to do a lot of that to have success in Texas.”
Couple more teams that need big wins this weekend or risk getting crossed off the list. Nebraska has lost three of their last four games including a 17-point pasting at Penn State. This is called NOT peaking at the right time. A loss to Minnesota Saturday would put at least one nail in the coffin.
Same goes for Boise State, a team that is really on the fence depending on which expert you follow. They play at Fresno State on Saturday then Air Force three nights later. Two teams that are having really down seasons. Win both of those and they will be at 22 wins and in good shape heading into the Mountain West tournament.
“It’s late February and we got guys excited to practice, excited to do their jobs, excited to get to the next game and that’s what you want this time of year, and you know the teams that can have that, have a chance.”
So, there are four bubble teams with two weeks to go. Here are a few more on my virtual white board. North Carolina, Indiana, Xavier, Oklahoma and Baylor all have similar records. All play in massive games the next couple weeks to close out the regular season.
Saturday officially ushers in the month of March. So the madness is here. I’ll be keeping the board updated until we get to Selection Sunday on the 16th.
