Less than three days before kickoff of Super Bowl 59 and the NFL put a bow on the 2024 season by handing out its individual awards. Thursday’s NFL Honors show in New Orleans recognized close to 20 of the top performers capped off by the league’s Most Valuable Player.
That is Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen, who led the Bills to the playoffs for the 7th straight season only to run into the Kansas City Chiefs once again. He threw for 28 touchdowns, ran for 12 more and had just 6 interceptions. It’s his first MVP Award and he narrowly beat out last year’s winner Lamar Jackson.
“We have such a great locker room in Buffalo and it takes everybody from the equipment staff, to the training room, to the strength staff, to Slick Rick in the mailroom, to the cafeteria up stairs. It truly takes everybody to have team success and I’m so fortunate to be a part of a great organization.”
Saquon Barkley was a lock for Offensive Player of the Year. The running back who will be front and center for the Eagles in the Super Bowl rushed for 2005 yards in the regular season. He’s only the 9th player in history to go over 2K – he also scored 13 touchdowns.
The Defensive Player of the Year is cornerback Patrick Surtain of the Denver Broncos. He is just the second defensive back to win the award since 2010. He had 4 interceptions, 11 passes defensed and didn’t allow more than 50 yards receiving in any game this year.
Some of the other high profile awards tonight, Offensive Rookie of the Year was no surprise, quarterback Jayden Daniels of the Washington Commanders. The Defensive Rookie of the Year is Rams pass rusher Jared Verse. Coach of the Year is the Vikings Kevin O’Connell after a 14-3 regular season. And the Comeback Player of the Year is quarterback Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals
And what has perhaps grown into the most prestigious award, the Walter Payton Man of the Year, which honors a player’s community involvement and charitable work was won by Arik Armstead of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Nice job, Arik, a great year for all the honorees. Just one more game to play.
