The National Hockey League is taking a break for the next couple weeks to showcase a signature event. If you’ve seen the commercials you know, as Sidney Crosby has said millions of times – it’s called, “The Four Nations Face Off”.
A round robin tournament featuring the best players from Canada, The U.S., Sweden and Finland. Every player in the tournament is an NHL regular.
NHL players haven’t played in the Olympics since 2014 so this a warm up for what fans might see during the 2026 Winter Games in Italy.
“I think everybody’s excited, obviously a great opportunity for our team to come together and you know make our country proud. It’s ultimately what it comes down to. You know obviously, this isn’t the Olympics or anything like that but you know this is all about national pride.”
Who has the advantage? With All-Stars everywhere it’s an even competition and it comes down to how quickly each team learns to play together. So says the hero of the 2014 Olympics, the aforementioned Sidney Crosby.
“just you know finding that chemistry and and making sure that you’re on the same page as far as you know systems and things like that so you know whatever team is is able to do that a little bit better is going to have success but that’s part of the challenge so I think you know, any way you can fast track that it’s to your advantage.”
Team USA’s roster is chock full of guys who played together as kids, defenseman Adam Fox says it won’t take long to get acclimated.
“We’re all pretty familiar with each other from you know, NTDP, World Juniors World Championship so, it’s fun to see some familiar faces meet some new guys and uh get some practice in too, to get some chemistry out there.”
It all starts on Wednesday when Team Canada opens play against Sweden in Montreal. You can watch it on TNT and TruTV.
Thursday, Team USA takes on Finland on ESPN.
Saturday it’s Team USA vs. Canada, Sweden vs. Finland. Sweden’s Mattias Ekholm is ready.
“It’s best on best, it’s amazing, it’s so much fun and hopefully we can be a good team out there and get a good start”
You may wonder why Russia, the country with the third most players in the NHL, is not involved. They are currently banned from international ice hockey competitions due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
