NEARLY 13,000 BODEGAS SERVE AS CORNERSTONES IN BUSTLING NEW YORK CITY NEIGHBORHOODS. THESE SMALL, OFTEN FAMILY-RUN STORES PROVIDE MORE THAN JUST GROCERIES AND SNACKS — THEY PLAY A KEY ROLE IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES.
HOWEVER, WITH RISING CRIME RATES, THESE ESSENTIAL BUSINESSES FREQUENTLY FIND THEMSELVES VULNERABLE, PUTTING BOTH THEIR OPERATIONS AND THE SAFETY OF THEIR EMPLOYEES AT RISK.
NOW FEDERAL FUNDING IS SET TO ENHANCE SAFETY FOR THESE SMALL BUSINESSES, PARTICULARLY THOSE TARGETED BY VIOLENT CRIME.
ONE NEW YORK CITY REPRESENTATIVE HAS SECURED FUNDING FOR FIVE COMPREHENSIVE SECURITY ENHANCEMENTS ALONG A STRETCH OF BROADWAY. THIS INCLUDES INSTALLING 800 CAMERAS AND IMPROVING LOCKS TO ENSURE BUSINESSES CAN OPERATE SAFELY.
REP. ADRIANO ESPAILLAT
“This is a tool that will help not only the bodega owners and the small businesses but the entire block. When you put a camera up that is 360 degrees, it covers the entire block. So the police will have access to information that will lead to the arrest of criminals who try to perpetrate crimes in small businesses.”

THESE MEASURES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED ALONGSIDE INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY POLICING PROGRAMS AND VIOLENCE INTERRUPTION INITIATIVES AIMED AT CURBING YOUTH INVOLVEMENT IN GANG ACTIVITIES.
EACH OF THE FIVE INITIATIVES HAS BEEN ALLOCATED APPROXIMATELY $1 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING.
AT THE SAME TIME, REPRESENTATIVE RITCHIE TORRES IS STEPPING UP WITH THE BODEGA ACT. THIS NEW BILL GRANT FUNDS TO ADD PANIC BUTTONS AND SURVEILLANCE EQUIPMENT FOR NEW YORK CITY BODEGAS.
