NYC bodegas get federal funding for security enhancements

Share

Nearly 13,000 bodegas dot the landscape of New York City, serving as vital hubs in both bustling and quieter neighborhoods. These small, often family-operated stores do more than just sell groceries and snacks; they are integral to the fabric of their communities.

Despite their importance, these businesses are increasingly vulnerable to crime, with safety concerns affecting both their operations and their employees. In response, new federal funding has been earmarked to bolster safety measures for these often-targeted establishments.

Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., has successfully advocated for $5 million in federal funds allocated to five innovative security initiatives. These funds will enhance security along Broadway from 90th to 218th streets through the installation of 800 surveillance cameras and improved locking mechanisms to safeguard businesses.

“This comprehensive approach not only supports bodega owners and small businesses but also enhances safety for the entire block,” Espaillat explained. “Installing a 360-degree camera covers the entire block, providing police with crucial information to apprehend criminals.”

The funding also supports community policing and anti-gang initiatives, including programs that engage youth in violence prevention and place police officers in schools to mentor young people through sports.

Simultaneously, Rep. Ritchie Torres, D-N.Y., has introduced the Bodega Owner Defense Enhancement Grant Assistance Act, also known as the BODEGA Act. This legislation seeks to amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. It will allow the use of Byrne-JAG grant funds for installing panic buttons and surveillance equipment in private businesses, further safeguarding them against violent crimes.

“Bodegas are the cornerstone of their communities in the Bronx and throughout New York City,” Torres said. “Too often, their owners and employees are victims of violent incidents. The BODEGA Act will provide essential funding for these small businesses to enhance their security measures, ensuring quicker NYPD response times during emergencies.”

Supporting the legislation, Radhames Rodríguez, president of the United Bodegas of America, expressed his gratitude. He emphasized that the bill would protect not just the businesses but also the communities they serve.

NEARLY 13,000 BODEGAS SERVE AS CORNERSTONES IN BUSTLING NEW YORK CITY NEIGHBORHOODS. THESE SMALL, OFTEN FAMILY-RUN STORES PROVIDE MORE THAN JUST GROCERIES AND SNACKS — THEY PLAY A KEY ROLE IN LOCAL COMMUNITIES.

HOWEVER, WITH RISING CRIME RATES, THESE ESSENTIAL BUSINESSES FREQUENTLY FIND THEMSELVES VULNERABLE, PUTTING BOTH THEIR OPERATIONS AND THE SAFETY OF THEIR EMPLOYEES AT RISK.

NOW FEDERAL FUNDING IS SET TO ENHANCE SAFETY FOR THESE SMALL BUSINESSES, PARTICULARLY THOSE TARGETED BY VIOLENT CRIME.

ONE NEW YORK CITY REPRESENTATIVE HAS SECURED FUNDING FOR FIVE COMPREHENSIVE SECURITY ENHANCEMENTS ALONG A STRETCH OF BROADWAY. THIS INCLUDES INSTALLING 800 CAMERAS AND IMPROVING LOCKS TO ENSURE BUSINESSES CAN OPERATE SAFELY.

REP. ADRIANO ESPAILLAT
“This is a tool that will help not only the bodega owners and the small businesses but the entire block. When you put a camera up that is 360 degrees, it covers the entire block. So the police will have access to information that will lead to the arrest of criminals who try to perpetrate crimes in small businesses.”

THESE MEASURES WILL BE IMPLEMENTED ALONGSIDE INNOVATIVE COMMUNITY POLICING PROGRAMS AND VIOLENCE INTERRUPTION INITIATIVES AIMED AT CURBING YOUTH INVOLVEMENT IN GANG ACTIVITIES.

EACH OF THE FIVE INITIATIVES HAS BEEN ALLOCATED APPROXIMATELY $1 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING.

AT THE SAME TIME, REPRESENTATIVE RITCHIE TORRES IS STEPPING UP WITH THE BODEGA ACT. THIS NEW BILL GRANT FUNDS TO ADD PANIC BUTTONS AND SURVEILLANCE EQUIPMENT FOR NEW YORK CITY BODEGAS.
