How did DeepSeek burst on the public scene?

DeepSeek burst on the scene last week when it announced that it had developed an artificial intelligence model that costs far less to operate than American competitors, such as OpenAI. The surprising news sent the U.S. stock market plunging.

What are the concerns and risks about its coding?

However, the potential risk that DeepSeek poses to national security appears to be greater than originally feared. Cyber security experts call it an open door between DeepSeek and the Chinese government. The CEO of Feroot Security in Toronto, Canada, Ivan Tsarynny, told ABC News his company sees direct links to servers that are under the control of the Chinese government.

What is DeepSeek’s connection to Chinese technology?

Tsarynny said his company used AI software to decrypt portions of DeepSeek’s code. They found what appeared to be intentionally hidden programming that has the capability to send user data to a website and China Mobile, a telecommunications company that is owned and operated by the Chinese government.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) banned China Mobile from operating in the United States in 2019 due to concerns that could create irreparable damage to U.S. national security.

What is the reaction so far from the United States?

Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., who is on the House Intelligence Committee, calls the findings alarming and believes DeepSeek should be banned from all government devices.

DeepSeek has not responded to the ABC News report.

“Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the President of the United States, the most powerful person in the world,” Green said during a speech on the House floor. “And the Prime Minister of Israel should be ashamed knowing the history of his people to stand there and allow such things to be said.”

Who is Rep. Al Green?

Green was the first Democrat to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump during his first term. In October 2017, Green said Trump should be impeached for inciting bigotry. Then, like now, he admitted he was standing alone in his effort.

“I did it before I laid the foundation for impeachment, and it was done. Nobody knows more about it than I, and I know that it’s time for us to lay the foundation again,” Green said.

Why was Trump impeached before?

Donald Trump is the only president to be impeached twice. The first came in December 2019 for withholding aid to Ukraine and asking President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to open an investigation into the Bidens. The second was in January 2021 after the riot at the U.S. Capitol building. He was acquitted both times by the Senate.

How have Democratic lawmakers reacted?

Many Democrats were astounded by the president’s proposal to take over Gaza. They said any plan to rebuild Gaza has to be in line with the United States’ two-state policy and respect that it is the Palestinian homeland.

“This is an extraordinarily dangerous approach for the President to take, and not consistent with American values,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren said. “The President has simply been treating Gaza as if it were one more real estate development opportunity.”

How have Republican lawmakers reacted?

Republicans said it is clear the status quo in Gaza is not working, and that significant change is needed to rebuild and remove Hamas from power.

“There are two main issues. Number one, who’s going to pay to rebuild Gaza, and number two, who’s going to run Gaza?” Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said.

Israel has said it will not accept Hamas as the governing body of the strip.

Pete & Gerry’s said it is the nation’s top producer of pasture-raised and organic, free-range eggs.

How did the egg heist happen?

Authorities have not revealed how they believe the thieves made off with the eggs nor if there are any suspects.

The company told Fortune that it is cooperating with law enforcement and is hoping to crack the case as soon as possible.

Why is it a big deal?

The theft comes as egg prices have risen over the past few years due to bird flu which has led to the mass slaughtering of egg-laying hens.

As Straight Arrow News previously reported, the high cost of eggs has forced breakfast chain Waffle House to raise prices, adding a 50-cent surcharge to each egg. The company blamed the move on the “nationwide cost of eggs.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average price for a dozen large grade-A eggs, which are the kind that Waffle House uses, was $4.15 in December 2024, which is up from $3.65 in November 2024.

  • President Donald Trump’s proposal to “take over” Gaza has drawn reactions from around the world. Trump has said he isn’t ruling out sending personnel to rebuild the area.
  • Hamas rejected the idea and said it could undermine the ceasefire between Gaza and Israel.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Trump’s proposal is “worthwhile” to explore.

Hamas rejected the idea as the group prepares to negotiate with Israel on the next phase of their ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

The two sides are exchanging hostages and prisoners after a 15-month war.

“Trump’s remarks about his desire to control Gaza are ridiculous and absurd, and any ideas of this kind are capable of igniting the region.” Hamas leader Abu Zuhri told Reuters.

How are leaders in the Middle East reacting?

Around two million Palestinians call Gaza home, but Trump is suggesting they leave and go to neighboring countries like Egypt and Jordan, which are also rejecting the idea.

“His majesty the king stressed the need to stop settlement activities and reject any attempts to annex lands and displace Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, stressing the need to establish the Palestinians on their land,” Jordan’s state news agency said in a statement on Wednesday, Jan. 5.

Egypt said Palestinians should not be leaving Gaza while it’s being rebuilt, while Saudi Arabia said it won’t normalize relations with Israel without the establishment of a Palestinian state including Gaza.

Who is backing a two-state solution?

Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to a two-state solution, dismissing Trump’s plan.

“Australia’s position is the same as it was this morning, as it was last year. The Australian government supports, on a bipartisan basis, a two-state solution in the Middle East,” Albanese said.

What are U.S. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle saying?

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who’s a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said Trump’s plan is a distraction to change the conversation away from another goal.

“The impact is to try to distract Americans from the real story: Donald Trump and Elon Musk are trying to seize control of the government,” Murphy said in an interview with MSNBC. “So that they can punish their enemies and reward their friends and gobble up a bunch of money for their billionaire and corporate friends.”

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., the only Palestinian American member of Congress, said in a post on X that Trump was “openly calling for ethnic cleansing.”

She added, “He’s perfectly fine cutting off working Americans from federal funds while the funding to the Israeli government continues flowing.”

Trump’s proposal caused mixed reactions among his key Republican allies.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., called the plan “problematic.

Reps. Nancy Mace of South Carolina and Richard Hudson of North Carolina, both members of the House Republican Israel Caucus, were among those supporting the proposal.

“President Trump will never stop working to ensure historic and lasting peace!” Hudson posted to X.

Mace posted, “Let’s turn Gaza into Mar-a-Lago.”

Does Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu support Trump’s plan?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not explicitly endorse Trump’s plan to take over Gaza. However, he said it’s a move that could change history and is a worthwhile proposal to explore.

Netanyahu continues his meetings in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday. He is expected to talk with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Stradivari made approximately 1,100 instruments between the late 1600s and early 1700s. Only about 600 Stradivarius violins remain today. They are revered for their craftsmanship and distinct sound.

A violin with a historic past

This particular Stradivarius, known as the “Joachim-Ma,” was once owned by 19th-century violinist Joseph Joachim, famous for his interpretations of Mozart and Beethoven. It was later acquired by violinist Si-Hon Ma, who donated it to the New England Conservatory in Boston before his passing in 2009.

For those who have played or even heard a Stradivarius, often called a “Strad,” the sound is described as unmatched.

The debate: Old vs. new violins

Renowned violinist Joshua Bell told NPR that the unique tonal quality of a Stradivarius is difficult to replicate.

“It’s the overtones and the way, once you get to know the instrument, you can find these tonal varieties that are very difficult to find in a modern instrument,” Bell said.

However, a 2013 study put that belief to the test. Researchers had violinists blindly compare six old Stradivarius violins against six modern ones. The results showed that musicians actually rated newer violins higher for playability, articulation and projection. They also struggled to distinguish the older instruments from the modern ones.

A record-breaking auction?

If the violin sells for its projected value, it will surpass the current record set in 2011. That year, a Stradivarius sold for $15.9 million and earned a Guinness World Record for the most expensive instrument sold at auction. Proceeds from that sale supported Japan’s tsunami relief efforts, following a devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Despite debates over sound quality, Stradivarius violins remain highly sought after. Their historical significance and careful preservation make them among the most valuable instruments in the world.

Proceeds from this auction will support scholarships at the New England Conservatory. Bidding begins Friday at 11:15 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.

[KENNEDY FELTON]

A violin valued between $12 to $18 million might sound like a lot… until you hear its story.

FOR THE PAST 300 YEARS IT HAS STIRRED THE SOUL

You heard that right—300 years. In 1714, luthier Antonio Stradivari crafted this violin during his renowned “Golden Period.” Now, it’s hitting the auction block Friday—courtesy of Sotheby’s—and it could become the most expensive musical instrument ever sold.

Stradivari is one of the most celebrated instrument makers in history, who made around 1,100 instruments between the late 1600s and early 1700s in Italy. Today, only about 600 Stradivarius violins—or Strads for short—remain, revered for their craftsmanship and distinctive sound.

THIS PARTICULAR STRAD IS KNOWN AS THE JOACHIM-MA VIOLIN. IT WAS ONCE OWNED BY 19TH CENTURY VIOLINIST JOSEPH JOACHIM, FAMED FOR HIS INTERPRETATIONS OF MOZART AND BEETHOVEN. IT LATER BELONGED TO SI-HON MA, WHO DONATED IT TO THE NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY IN BOSTON BEFORE HIS PASSING IN 2009.

For those who have played or even heard a Strad—the experience is like none other.

“It’s the overtones and the way once you get to know the instrument, you can find these tonal varieties that are very difficult to find in a modern instrument.” – Joshua Bell, Violinist

If the Joachim-Ma Violin sells for its projected value, it will surpass the current record—a 2011 Strad sale that fetched $15.9 million and earned a Guinness record. That violin was sold to support Japan’s relief fund after the country’s deadly earthquake and tsunami.

WHILE THESE INSTRUMENTS ARE THOUGHT TO BE SOME OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY INSTRUMENTS IN THE WORLD, CAN YOU REALLY TELL A DIFFERENCE? IN 2013, RESEARCHERS CONDUCTED A STUDY USING SIX OLDER VIOLINS—FIVE OF WHICH WERE STRADS—AND SIX MODERN VIOLINS, WHERE VIOLINISTS BLIND TESTED EACH.

“On average, soloists rated their favorite new violins more highly than their favorite old for playability, articulation, and projection, and at least equal to old in terms of timbre. Soloists failed to distinguish new from old at better than chance levels.”

But still, Strad violins remain highly coveted because of their history and preservation, which has protected them from common issues with violins like cracks or woodworm.

PROCEEDS FROM THIS AUCTION WILL SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE NEW ENGLAND CONSERVATORY. BIDDING STARTS FRIDAY AT 11:15 A.M. EASTERN.

President Donald Trump said he has issued orders for the U.S. military to launch a massive retaliatory strike on Iran if he is assassinated. Sanctions reimposed on Iran

The executive order restores elements of Trump’s previous “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, reimplementing sanctions lifted under past agreements. The move follows ongoing concerns over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and its activities in the Middle East.

U.S. officials have tracked Iranian threats against Trump and other former administration officials for years. Some of those officials, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former National Security Adviser John Bolton, had their government security details revoked after Trump returned to office.

Iranian threats and past tensions

The Justice Department previously charged an Afghan national, Farhad Shakeri, with allegedly conspiring with Iran to assassinate Trump before the 2024 presidential election. Shakeri remains at large in Iran, according to U.S. authorities.

Iran has long vowed retaliation for the 2020 killing of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, who was killed in a U.S. airstrike ordered by Trump. Iranian authorities have sought criminal charges against Trump, Pompeo and former CENTCOM Commander Kenneth McKenzie over the operation.

Trump suggests diplomatic talks still possible

While promising harsh consequences for any attempt on his life, Trump also signaled openness to negotiations with Tehran.

“The Iran situation, hopefully … I’m going to sign it, but hopefully we’re not going to have to use it very much,” he said. “We will see whether or not we can arrange or work out a deal with Iran and everybody can live together, and maybe that’s possible and maybe it’s not possible. So I’m signing this, and I’m unhappy to do it, but I really have not so much choice because we have to be strong and firm. And I hope that it’s not going to have to be used in any great measure at all.”

Iran rejects US sanctions and military threats

Iran dismissed Trump’s comments. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the policy a “failed experiment” and stated that the reimposition of sanctions would “end in failure,” as it did during Trump’s first term.

Despite escalating tensions, Trump later denied reports that the U.S. and Israel were planning a military strike on Iran, saying he preferred to negotiate a new nuclear deal instead.

Trump calls for new nuclear agreement

Trump posted on Truth Social expressing his desire for a “verified nuclear peace agreement” and urged immediate talks with Iran.

“I want Iran to be a great and successful Country, but one that cannot have a Nuclear Weapon. Reports that the United States, working in conjunction with Israel, is going to blow Iran into smithereens, ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATED.”

The statement followed a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring Tehran never acquires a nuclear weapon.

Iran expresses concerns over Israel’s role in negotiations

Iran’s foreign minister maintained that “maximum pressure” had failed before and would fail again.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian downplayed the impact of sanctions, calling Iran a “powerful, resource-rich country” that could navigate economic challenges.

IRANIAN AUTHORITIES SOUGHT CRIMINAL CHARGES AGAINST TRUMP, FORMER SECRETARY OF STATE MIKE POMPEO, AND FORMER CENTCOM COMMANDER KENNETH MCKENZIE OVER THE OPERATION.

WHILE TRUMP PROMISED SEVERE CONSEQUENCES FOR ANY ATTEMPT ON HIS LIFE, HE ALSO LEFT THE DOOR OPEN TO DIPLOMATIC TALKS.

“The Iran situation, hopefully… I’m going to sign it, but hopefully we’re not going to have to use it very much. We will see whether or not we can arrange or work out a deal with Iran and everybody can live together, and maybe that’s possible and maybe it’s not possible. So I’m signing this, and I’m unhappy to do it, but I really have not so much choice because we have to be strong and firm. And I hope that it’s not going to have to be used in any great measure at all.”

IRAN DISMISSED THE THREAT THE COUNTRY’S FOREIGN MINISTER CALLEDTRUMP’S POLICY A “FAILED EXPERIMENT” ,SAYING THE REIMPOSITION OF SANCTIONS WOULD END IN FAILURE, JUST AS IT DID DURING HIS FIRST TERM.

BUT DESPITE THE THREATS AND SANCTIONS, TRUMP LATER DENIED REPORTS THAT THE U.S. AND ISRAEL WERE PLANNING A MILITARY STRIKE ON IRAN, SAYING HE WOULD RATHER PURSUE A NEW NUCLEAR DEAL.

TRUMP POSTED ON TRUTH SOCIAL, EXPRESSING HIS DESIRE FOR A “VERIFIED NUCLEAR PEACE AGREEMENT” AND CALLING FOR IMMEDIATE TALKS WITH IRAN. HE SUGGESTED A “BIG MIDDLE EAST CELEBRATION” IF A DEAL IS REACHED. HE ADDED:

I want Iran to be a great and successful Country, but one that cannot have a Nuclear Weapon. Reports that the United States, working in conjunction with Israel, is going to blow Iran into smithereens,” ARE GREATLY EXAGGERATED.

THE COMMENTS COME AMID A MEETING WITH ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER BENJAMIN NETANYAHU, WHERE BOTH LEADERS REAFFIRMED THEIR COMMITMENT TO ENSURING TEHRAN NEVER OBTAINS A NUCLEAR WEAPON.

IRAN’S FOREIGN MINISTER RESPONDED THAT “MAXIMUM PRESSURE” HAS FAILED BEFORE AND WILL FAIL AGAIN, WHILE IRANIAN PRESIDENT MASOUD PEZESHKIAN DOWNPLAYED THE IMPACT OF SANCTIONS, CALLING IRAN “A POWERFUL, RESOURCE-RICH COUNTRY” CAPABLE OF NAVIGATING CHALLENGES.

AN ANONYMOUS IRANIAN OFFICIAL TOLD REUTERS THAT TEHRAN STILL WANTS DIPLOMACY BUT IS CONCERNED ABOUT ISRAEL’S POTENTIAL SABOTAGE OF ANY AGREEMENT.

USAID has operated for more than 60 years, with a mission to fight starvation and disease and fund education globally.

How did USAID employees find out?

The administration emailed USAID workers to inform them of their status and told direct USAID hires they had 30 days to return home unless considered essential. The memo also stated that all contractors deemed nonessential would be fired.

According to the U.S. Congressional Research Service, the agency has more than 10,000 employees. Around two-thirds of them work overseas.

What is the bigger picture?

Trump’s move comes as questions swirl about the agency’s ultimate fate. The Trump administration appointed the U.S. secretary of state in charge, placed senior USAID officials on leave and ordered employees to work remotely. Over the past several weeks, the government has restricted access to USAID’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Supporters of shuttering the agency claimed the USAID leaders poorly managed the agency and were inefficient.

Elon Musk, Trump’s head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), described the agency as a “ball of worms” and said Tuesday it was “beyond repair.”

Why are some people criticizing the move?

Critics claim that ending USAID would weaken U.S. influence abroad and allow adversaries like China and Russia to provide aid and expand their influence.

Democratic lawmakers and U.S. diplomatic researchers also argued the Trump administration does not have the authority to shut down USAID.

They contended that USAID is protected by legislation as an independent agency and needs congressional approval to be dismantled.

What has the order done to USAID services?

Health programs credited with helping end polio and smallpox epidemics and an effort to fight HIV/Aids in Africa that reportedly saved more than 20 million lives, as well as food and medication deliveries, have been brought to a halt as a result of Trump’s recent order.

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION MAKING THE ANNOUNCEMENT TUESDAY AS IT MOVES TO END U-S-A-I-D, WHICH HAS FOR MORE THAN 60 YEARS OPERATED UNDER A MISSION TO FIGHT STARVATION, DISEASE AND FUND EDUCATION GLOBALLY.

THE ADMINISTRATION TOLD U-S-A-I-D WORKERS OF THEIR STATUS IN AN EMAIL AND TOLD DIRECT U-S-A-I-D HIRES THEY HAD 30 DAYS TO RETURN HOME UNLESS THEY ARE CONSIDERED ESSENTIAL.

THE MEMO ALSO SAYS ALL CONTRACTORS DEEMED NON-ESSENTIAL WILL BE FIRED.

THE AGENCY HAS MORE THAN 10-THOUSAND EMPLOYEES AND AROUND TWO-THIRDS OF THEM WORK OVERSEAS, ACCORDING TO THE CONGRESSIONAL RESEARCH SERVICE.

TRUMP’S MOVE COMES WHILE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE AGENCY’S ULTIMATE FATE SWIRL — SECRETARY OF STATE MARCO RUBIO HAS BEEN PUT IN CHARGE, SENIOR OFFICIALS HAVE BEEN PLACED ON LEAVE, AND EMPLOYEES WERE ORDERED TO WORK REMOTELY WHILE ACCESS TO USAID’S HEADQUARTERS IN WASHINGTON D-C WAS RESTRICTED.

SUPPORTERS OF SHUTTERING THE AGENCY CLAIM IT’S POORLY MANAGED AND INEFFICENT.

ELON MUSK, TRUMP’S HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF GOVERNMENT EFFICIENCY, RECENTLY DESCRIBED THE AGENCY AS A “BALL OF WORMS” AND SAID TUESDAY IT WAS “BEYOND REPAIR.”

CRITICS CLAIM AN END TO U-S-A-I-D WOULD WEAKEN U-S INFLUENCE ABROAD AND OPEN THE DOOR FOR ADVERSARIES LIKE CHINA OR RUSSIA TO PROVIDE AID AND EXPAND THEIR INFLUENCE.

DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKERS AND U-S DIPLOMATIC RESEARCHERS ALSO ARGUE THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION DOESN’T HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO SHUT DOWN USAID.

Recent shortfalls in Army recruitment and new targets

In 2022, the Army missed its target of 60,000 recruits by 15,000. Similarly, in 2023, the Army fell short of its 65,000 enlistment target by 15,000. However, in 2024, the Army successfully met its revised goal of 55,000 recruits.

The Army is optimistic about surpassing its recruitment goals in 2025. Officials have set a target of 61,000 recruits. The Army announced last month it believes it will recruit 61,000 new soldiers and 20,000 additional recruits through the Delayed Entry Program for 2026.

Army secretary nominee criticizes recruitment goals

Daniel Driscoll, President Donald Trump’s nominee for Army secretary, raised concerns during his confirmation hearing last Thursday, Jan. 30. Driscoll suggested that the Army’s recruitment goals have been set too low and called for further action.

“For the last 3-4 years, we’ve missed our goals,” Driscoll said during his confirmation hearing. “Even the goals we hit from the outside, it seems as if the Army lowered their goals. The best analogy I heard is the Army threw the dart at the dartboard and then drew the bullseye around where the dart landed. That’s not the best way to staff an army. We have the fewest number of active soldiers that we’ve had since World War II, even as conflict is erupting around the world.”

Parents, you’re likely the ones exposing your kids to inappropriate content

Listen

  • A new study found parents are likely to be exposing their kids to age-inappropriate content. Researchers found a link between parental screen time and exposure to mature content.
  • The more time parents spend on screen-based devices, the more likely their child is exposed to this content.
  • The study specifically focused on exposure to R-rated movies and mature video games.

Full Story

Many parents have rules about what they do and don’t want their kids to see at any given age, but in a world of technology, it can be hard to keep them away from content parents deem inappropriate. Now, a new study shows parents may be their own worst enemy.

The study published on Tuesday, Feb. 4, in the journal BMC Pediatrics found the more time parents spend on their phones, the more age-inappropriate content children are exposed to.

How did researchers come to that conclusion?

For the study, researchers used data from the National Institutes of Health’s Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. They looked at patterns for more than 10,000 “young adolescents” who were 12 and 13 years old.

Researchers used a 1-4 scale and had parents agree or disagree with a statement. For example, parents would be given a statement like “I try to limit how much I use a screen-based device when I’m with my child” and then answer one (strongly disagree) to four (strongly agree).

Then they had kids answer two questions on a scale from zero-3, zero meaning “never” and a three being “all the time. Those questions were, “How often do you watch R-rated movies?” and “How often do you play mature-rated video games?”

The study found that each unit of parental screen time on the 1-4 scale resulted in an 11% increase in children watching R-rated movies or playing mature video games. It also found frequent screen time during meals or in the bedroom was notably associated with exposure to mature content.

So, what exactly does that mean?

According to the study, kids are paying attention to their parents, even if it’s not in the way parents want them to.

MANY PARENTS HAVE RULES ABOUT WHAT THEY DO AND DON’T WANT THEIR KIDS SEEING AT ANY GIVEN AGE, BUT IN A WORLD OF TECHNOLOGY, IT CAN BE HARD TO TOTALLY KEEP THEM AWAY FROM CONTENT PARENTS DEEM INAPPROPRIATE… AND A NEW STUDY SHOWS – PARENTS MAY BE THEIR OWN WORST ENEMY.

A NEW STUDY PUBLISHED THIS WEEK IN THE JOURNAL B-M-C PEDIATRICS FOUND THE MORE TIME PARENTS SPEND ON THEIR PHONES – THE MORE AGE-INAPPROPRIATE CONTENT CHILDREN ARE EXPOSED TO.

FOR THE STUDY, RESEARCHERS USED DATA FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH’S ADOLESCENT BRAIN COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT STUDY.

THEY LOOKED AT PATTERNS FOR MORE THAN 10-THOUSAND “YOUNG ADOLESCENTS” WHO WERE 12 AND 13 YEARS OLD.

RESEARCHERS USED A ONE TO FOUR SCALE AND HAD PARENTS AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH A STATEMENT.

FOR EXAMPLE, I’D ANSWER 4 TO THE STATEMENT “I TRY TO LIMIT HOW MUCH I USE A SCREEN-BASED DEVICE WHEN I’M WITH MY CHILD” – MEANING I STRONGLY AGREE.

ONE IS THE OPPOSITE – MEANING STRONGLY DISAGREE.

THEN THEY HAD KIDS ANSWER TWO QUESTIONS ON A SCALE FROM ZERO TO THREE, A ZERO MEANING “NEVER” AND A THREE BEING “ALL THE TIME.

THOSE QUESTIONS WERE “HOW OFTEN DO YOU WATCH R-RATED MOVIES?” AND “HOW OFTEN DO YOU PLAY MATURE-RATED VIDEO GAMES?”

THE STUDY FOUND THAT THE EACH UNIT OF PARENTAL SCREEN TIME ON THE 1 TO 4 SCALE RESULTED IN AN 11 PERCENT INCREASE OF CHILDREN WATCHING R-RATED MOVIES OR PLAYING MATURE VIDEO GAMES.

IT ALSO FOUND FREQUENT SCREEN TIME DURING MEALS OR IN THE BEDROOM WERE NOTABLY ASSOCIATED WITH EXPOSURE TO MATURE CONTENT.

TO PUT IT BLUNTLY, KIDS ARE PAYING ATTENTION TO THEIR PARENTS – EVEN IF IT’S NOT IN THE WAY THEY WANT.

Greenland bans foreign political donations amid renewed US interest

Listen
Share

  • The parliament in Greenland has moved to curb foreign contributions to candidates in its election. The move comes in advance of the autonomous island’s elections, slated for March.
  • Greenland is rich in minerals and has been in the headlines after U.S. President Donald Trump made remarks about acquiring the world’s largest island and making it part of the United States.
  • Key issues for Greenland residents in the upcoming election include independence from Denmark, the United States interest and the economy.

Full Story

Lawmakers in Greenland on Tuesday, Feb. 4, seemed to be safeguarding against U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to acquire the island territory, officially owned by Denmark. Greenland’s parliament passed a measure that bans political donations from foreign or anonymous contributors.

What does the new bill say?

The language in the bill says it is aimed at protecting Greenland’s political integrity and takes effect immediately.

It also says the bill “must be seen in light of the geopolitical interests in Greenland and the current situation where representatives of a great power have expressed interest in taking over and controlling Greenland.”

One official added that it’s a preventative measure.

What interest does the U.S. have in Greenland?

The United States has a large military base in Greenland. The autonomous island has a population of a little less than 57,000 people and is geographically 836,000 square miles. It is also rich in minerals such as copper, nickel, cobalt and uranium.

Although part of Denmark, Greenland has been self-governed since 2009. For its part, Denmark provides military defense and steers foreign affairs for the island.

Why do political contributions in Greenland matter now?

Prime Minister Mute Egede announced Tuesday that Greenland would hold a general election on March 11. The top issues are expected to be Greenland’s independence, relations with Denmark, the United States and the economy.

Greenland’s economy is heavily reliant on the fishing industry. It also receives over $500 million from Denmark in grants each year, accounting for 20% of the island’s GDP and half of its budget.

A recent poll found that a majority of Greenland’s residents would vote for independence. All five parliamentary parties, including the prime minister, support it.

Recent Trump administration remarks on Greenland

When it comes to the United States and the Trump administration, Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently stated that acquiring Greenland would be in the national interest.

AS MUCH OF THE TALK TUESDAY CENTERED ON PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S REMARKS ABOUT THE UNITED STATES TAKING OVER THE GAZA STRIP,  LAWMAKERS IN GREENLAND WERE BUSY, SEEMINGLY SAFEGUARDING AGAINST TRUMP’S PLAN TO  ACQUIRE THE ISLAND TERRITORY. THE GREENLAND PARLIAMENT PASSED A MEASURE THAT BANS POLITICAL DONATIONS FROM FOREIGN OR ANONYMOUS CONTRIBUTORS.
THE BILL’S LANGUAGE SAYS IT IS AIMED AT PROTECTING GREENLAND’S POLITICAL INTEGRITY AND TAKES EFFECT IMMEDIATELY.  IT ALSO READS THAT THE BILL “ MUST BE SEEN IN LIGHT OF THE GEOPOLITICAL INTERESTS IN GREENLAND AND THE CURRENT SITUATION WHERE REPRESENTATIVES OF AN ALLIED GREAT POWER HAVE EXPRESSED INTEREST IN TAKING OVER AND CONTROLLING GREENLAND.”  ONE OFFICIAL CALLED IT A PREVENTATIVE MEASURE.
THE UNITED STATES HAS A LARGE MILITARY BASE IN GREENLAND, WHICH HAS A POPULATION OF ONLY ABOUT 57,000 PEOPLE.  IT IS 836,000 SQUARE MILE,  WHICH IS ROUGHLY ONE-FOURTH THE SIZE OF THE UNITED STATES.  THE COUNTRY IS RICH IN MINERALS SUCH AS COPPER, NICKEL, COBALT AND URANIUM.  ALTHOUGH PART OF DENMARK, GREENLAND HAS BEEN SELF-GOVERNED SINCE 2009.
PRIME MINISTER, MUTE EGEDE, (PRONOUNCED MEW-TAY, EGG-DAH)  ANNOUNCED ON TUESDAY, THE DANISH TERRITORY WOULD HOLD A GENERAL ELECTION ON MARCH 11TH. THE TOP ISSUES ARE EXPECTED TO BE GREENLAND’S INDEPENDENCE, RELATIONS WITH DENMARK, AS WELL AS THE UNITED STATES AND THE ECONOMY WHICH IS HEAVILY RELIANT ON FISHING.
A RECENT POLL, BY VERIAN, FOUND THAT A MAJORITY OF GREENLAND RESIDENTS WOULD VOTE FOR INDEPENDENCE. ALL FIVE PARLIAMENTARY PARTIES, INCLUDING THE PRIME MINISTER, SUPPORT IT.
MOST RECENTLY, SECRETARY OF STATE MARCO RUBIO CALLED PRESIDENT TRUMP’S DESIRE TO ACQUIRE GREENLAND AND MAKE IT PART OF THE UNITED STATES, QUOTE “ IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST.”  AND THAT “THIS IS NOT ABOUT ACQUIRING LAND FOR THE PURPOSE OF ACQUIRING LAND. “
