How did U.S. officials find out about the base?

Satellite images obtained by the news outlet show about a 1,500-acre site just southwest of Beijing. Intelligence officers believe this complex could be a so-called “doomsday” bunker for the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) to congregate in case of a nuclear war.

When finished, the command center, dubbed “Beijing Military City” makes the current world’s largest military command center, the Pentagon, look relatively small in comparison.

Intelligence experts also noted the images of the construction site, taken in mid-2024, are fitting for Beijing as the PLA prepares for its 100th anniversary in 2027.

What does it have to do with Taiwan?

It also comes as Chinese President Xi Jinping has repeatedly vowed to reunify with Taiwan in 2027, using force if necessary. The self-governing island has defense agreements in place with the United States, and the U.S. is dependent on Taiwan for most of the microchips which make electronics work.

What do we know about the facility so far?

A former CIA analyst told the Financial Times they suspect China’s new facility is meant to enhance Beijing’s “nuclear war-fighting capability.”

Around 100 cranes were observed operating at the three-mile site, constructing underground facilities connected by tunnels.

The Financial Times reported that there is no military presence currently at the site, but it has “all the hallmarks of a sensitive military site.” Popular hiking trails near the installation are closed and access to the grounds is strictly prohibited.

There are also signs warning against flying drones or taking pictures and the back of the project is blocked off by a checkpoint.

What did we know about China’s military expansion plans?

As Straight Arrow News previously reported, Beijing is beefing up its nuclear arsenal and the Pentagon estimates China will have 1,500 nuclear weapons by 2035.

Beijing also appears to be building a massive nuclear fusion center in the southwest city of Mianyang, which could allow for new nuclear weapons designs and the housing of nuclear weapons.

[CRAIG NIGRELLI]

CHINA IS BUILDING THE WORLD’S LARGEST MILITARY COMMAND CENTER.

AT LEAST TEN TIMES BIGGER THAN THE PENTAGON.

THAT’S WHAT U-S INTELLIGENCE OFFICERS TOLD THE FINANCIAL TIMES.

SATELLITE IMAGES OBTAINED BY THE NEWS OUTLET SHOW ABOUT A 15-HUNDRED ACRE SITE JUST SOUTHWEST OF BEIJING.

THOSE INTEL OFFICERS BELIEVE THIS COMPLEX COULD BE A “DOOMSDAY” BUNKER FOR THE PEOPLE’S LIBERATION ARMY’S TOP BRASS IN CASE OF NUCLEAR WAR.

WHEN FINISHED, THE COMMAND CENTER, DUBBED “BEIJING MILITARY CITY” MAKES THE CURRENT WORLD’S LARGEST MILITARY COMMAND CENTER, THE PENTAGON, LOOK TINY IN COMPARISON.

INTELLIGENCE EXPERTS ALSO NOTE, THE IMAGES OF THE CONSTRUCTION SITE TAKEN IN MID-2024, ARE FITTING FOR BEIJING AS THE P-L-A PREPARES FOR ITS 100TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2027.

IT ALSO COMES AS CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING REPEATEDLY VOWS TO REUNIFY WITH TAIWAN IN 2027 USING FORCE IF NECESSARY.THE SELF-GOVERNING ISLAND HAS DEFENSEIVE AGREEMENTS IN PLACE WITH THE UNITED STATES, AND THE U-S IS DEPENDENT ON TAIWAN FOR MOST OF THE MICROCHIPS WHICH MAKE ELECTRONICS WORK.

BUT BACK TO THE COMPLEX–A FORMER C-I-A ANALYST SUSPECTS CHINA’S NEW FACILITY IS MEANT TO ENHANCE BEIJING’S “NUCLEAR WAR-FIGHTING CAPABILITY.”

AROUND 100 CRANES WERE OBSERVED OPERATING AT THE THREE-MILE SITE, CONSTRUCTING UNDERGROUND FACILITIES CONNECTED BY  TUNNELS.

THE FINANCIAL TIMES REPORTED THERE IS NO MILITARY PRESENCE CURRENTLY AT THE SITE, BUT IT HAS ALL THE HALLMARKS OF A SENSITIVE MILITARY SITE. POPULAR HIKING TRAILS NEAR THE INSTALLATION ARE CLOSED AND ACCESS TO THE GROUNDS IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED.

THERE ARE ALSO SIGNS WARNING AGAINST FLYING DRONES OR TAKING PICTURES AND THE BACK OF THE PROJECT IS BLOCKED OFF BY A CHECKPOINT.

AS WE’VE REPORTED ON BEFORE, BEIJING IS BEEFING UP ITS NUCLEAR ARSENAL AND THE PENTAGON ESTIMATES CHINA WILL HAVE 15-HUNDRED NUCLEAR WEAPONS BY 2035.

BEIJING ALSO APPEARS TO BE BUILDING A MASSIVE NUCLEAR FUSION CENTER IN THE SOUTHWEST CITY OF MIANYANG, WHICH COULD ALLOW FOR NEW NUCLEAR WEAPONS DESIGNS AND THE HOUSING OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS.

But less than two years after opening, the luxury experience has permanently closed its doors in Orlando, Florida.

According to The Wrap, the former hotel will be transformed into a Walt Disney Imagineering office. The division is responsible for designing Disney’s creative projects, from theme parks to cruise ships.

A high-cost experience that didn’t last

The Galactic Starcruiser was marketed as a two-night, all-inclusive experience that allowed guests to live their own Star Wars adventure. It came with a hefty price tag — $4,800 for two guests and $6,000 for a family of four.

Disney designed the experience as an interactive role-playing journey, where guests could train with lightsabers, interact with Star Wars characters, and follow a structured itinerary of missions and activities.

Jenny Nicholson’s viral critique sparks debate

Not everyone was impressed.

YouTuber Jenny Nicholson, known for her deep dives into immersive entertainment, shared her experience in a four-hour video last year titled “The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel.”

Nicholson’s review, which has nearly 12 million views as of Friday, Jan. 31, breaks down why she felt the experience wasn’t worth the cost. She highlighted small cabins, rigid scheduling and lackluster mini-games — some of which she called “boring.”

The video went viral, amassing 3 million views in just a few days and trending across social media. Many believe the widespread criticism contributed to Disney’s decision to close the hotel early.

Nicholson’s video sparked widespread discussions online, with some guests agreeing with her assessment. However, some die-hard Star Wars fans praised the experience.

Nicholson’s video was so impactful that Disney attempted to file a copyright claim against it, citing the use of background music from their marketing clips.

Nicholson later addressed the situation on X, stating that Disney’s claim was unsuccessful.

For now, instead of offering a Star Wars escape for guests, the former luxury hotel will house the creative team behind Disney’s next big attractions.

IT WAS ONE OF DISNEY’S MOST AMBITIOUS AND IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES – PART HOTEL, PART LIVE-ACTION ROLEPLAY, ALL SET IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY.

But less than two years after opening, the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser permanently closed its doors in Orlando, Florida. Now, the multi-million dollar space is getting a second life, but not in the way fans might expect.

THE WRAP REPORTS THE HOTEL WILL BE TRANSFORMED INTO A WALT DISNEY IMAGINEERING OFFICE… THE BRANCH OF THE COMPANY RESPONSIBLE FOR DESIGNING THE CREATIVE ASPECTS OF DISNEY FROM THEME PARKS TO CRUISE SHIPS.

The former luxury spacecruiser hotel was once a two-night all-inclusive experience that came with a hefty price tag – $4,800 for two guests and $6,000 for a family of four.

DISNEY ORIGINALLY MARKETED THE HOTEL AS A FULLY IMMERSIVE STAR WARS ADVENTURE WHERE GUESTS COULD LIVE OUT THEIR OWN STORYLINE… INTERACT WITH CHARACTERS… AND EVEN ATTEND LIGHTSABER TRAINING.

“You’re provided with a trip itinerary which blocks out pretty much everything, almost down to the minute. You’re better off thinking of it as a summer camp. Space camp, if you like.” – JENNY NICHOLSON, YOUTUBER

Jenny Nicholson is an immersive entertainment YouTuber who shared her experience at the hotel in a four-hour video last year titled ‘The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel.’ The video—with nearly 12 million views as of Friday—breaks down why it wasn’t worth it. She shows herself walking through the hotel, attending themed dinner shows, and playing mini-games she described as boring. Her video went viral, amassing three million views within just a few days—a reaction many believe contributed to the hotel’s premature closing.

It sparked widespread discussions across various platforms in response to Nicholson’s video. Some users even shared personal experiences echoing her sentiments.

“Based on our experience I do not think the star cruiser is worth the money at this time. I know that it just opened but I really thought that Disney would have some of these kinks worked out.” – AmberHeartsDisney, Reddit user

And while other die-hard fans of the franchise praised the detailed storytelling, saying – “The service throughout was at a level even beyond Disney’s normally high standards and the actors were incredible.” – silver_moon21, Reddit user

The impact of Nicholson’s video led to Disney filing a copyright claim against it, citing the use of background music from their marketing clips.

Nicholson addressed the situation on X shortly after, saying Disney tried and failed to copyright claim her video.

So for now—instead of a Star Wars escape for guests, the space will serve as an office for the team behind Disney’s biggest—and maybe even their next—attractions.

Trump stated during his inaugural address that it would be the official policy of the federal government that there are only two genders: male and female. One of his executive orders instructed government agencies to use the word “sex” instead of “gender.”

According to the email obtained by Klippenstein, government signatures may only contain the following information: name, degree(s), title, organization, contact information, links to surveys and other approved information.

The email laid out specific instructions on how to change a signature and remove unapproved information.

According to ABC News, employees at the Departments of Transportation and Energy received similar instructions. It is unclear if the emails went out to all federal employees, but the president’s orders apply government-wide.

Nearly 100 US Special Forces vets hired to operate key checkpoints in Gaza

A U.S.-based security firm has hired nearly 100 former U.S. Special Forces personnel to help operate a key checkpoint in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas ceasefire. The North Carolina-based UG Solutions, founded in 2023, is leading the effort, offering a daily rate of at least $1,100 with an upfront $10,000 advance for hired personnel, according to a recruitment email verified by company officials.

The contractors will be stationed at a major checkpoint inside Gaza, which serves as a critical passage for civilians and aid shipments. A spokesperson for UG Solutions confirmed some recruits are already on-site but did not specify how many.

Role of U.S. contractors in Gaza checkpoint operations

The U.S. contractors’ primary mission is vehicle inspection and checkpoint security, ensuring compliance with ceasefire terms. They will not interact directly with civilians, according to a Palestinian official familiar with the agreement.

Instead, their role is focused on monitoring traffic along the Netzarim Corridor, a critical road dividing northern and southern Gaza, as well as Salah al-Din Street, the enclave’s main north-south route.

The security personnel will be armed with M4 rifles and Glock pistols, weapons commonly used by U.S. and Israeli forces. While rules of engagement have been established, UG Solutions has not publicly disclosed them.

Ceasefire deal involves private and regional security forces

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel confirmed that Israel insisted on including a private security firm in the ceasefire agreement. The checkpoint operation will also involve Egyptian security forces, who have reportedly been training for months in counterterrorism operations.

The United States government was not directly involved in selecting UG Solutions or awarding the contract, according to a source familiar with the negotiations. Instead, funding for the security operation comes from Israel and undisclosed Arab nations that played a role in brokering the ceasefire.

Concerns over security and risks to American contractors

The deployment of U.S. private contractors in Gaza is unprecedented and raises security concerns. Hamas remains a powerful force in the region, and experts warn that American personnel could become targets for militants or individuals angered by U.S. support for Israel.

Former Israeli intelligence officer Avi Melamed acknowledged the risks, saying, “Of course there is a threat they will face.”

Other analysts suggest that Hamas may tolerate the contractors’ presence because their role in reopening crossings reinforces Hamas’ claims of victory in the ceasefire negotiations.

U.S. history with private military contractors

The use of private U.S. security contractors in conflict zones has been controversial. The most infamous case occurred in 2007, when Blackwater personnel killed 14 civilians in Baghdad’s Nisour Square, sparking international outrage. Four contractors were convicted in the U.S. but later pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2020.

In another case, four Blackwater operatives were killed by insurgents in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004, leading to a large-scale U.S. military response. Critics argue that deploying armed contractors in volatile regions can escalate conflicts.

Future of private security in Gaza

The current ceasefire, mediated by Egypt and Qatar with U.S. support, is set to last 60 days. During this time, tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians are expected to return to northern Gaza, traveling through the checkpoint operated by UG Solutions and regional security forces.

It remains unclear whether UG Solutions’ contract will be extended beyond the ceasefire period. For now, U.S. officials and international observers are closely monitoring the security situation, particularly regarding how American contractors navigate the risks of operating in Gaza.

A U.S. SECURITY FIRM IS SENDING ALMOST 100 AMERICAN SPECIAL FORCES VETERANS TO HELP RUN A CHECKPOINT IN GAZA. IT’S PART OF THE CEASEFIRE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND HAMAS. THE COMPANY, UG SOLUTIONS, IS OFFERING VETERANS A DAILY PAY RATE STARTING AT $1,100, PLUS A $10,000 ADVANCE.

THE NORTH CAROLINA-BASED FIRM SAYS THE CONTRACTORS WILL INSPECT VEHICLES AND MANAGE CHECKPOINT OPERATIONS. SOME ARE ALREADY IN COUNTRY, BUT THE COMPANY ISN’T SAYING HOW MANY.

THIS CHECKPOINT WAS A STICKING POINT IN NEGOTIATIONS. ISRAEL INITIALLY WANTED TO STAFF IT WITH ITS OWN TROOPS, BUT LATER AGREED TO ALLOW PRIVATE SECURITY CONTRACTORS TO HELP KEEP AID MOVING. EGYPTIAN FORCES ARE ALSO ON-SITE, USING SCANNERS TO CHECK FOR WEAPONS.

HAVING AMERICAN CONTRACTORS IN GAZA IS A FIRST, AND IT COMES WITH RISKS. HAMAS IS STILL ACTIVE IN THE AREA, AND YOU DON’T NEED TO BE A SECURITY EXPERT TO KNOW THERE WILL LIKELY BE CLASHES WITH MILITANTS OR CIVILIANS UPSET OVER U.S. SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL.
THE CONTRACTORS WILL BE ARMED WITH M4 RIFLES AND GLOCK PISTOLS, BUT THE EXACT RULES FOR ENGAGEMENT AREN’T EXACTLY CLEAR AT THIS TIME. .

SO FAR, THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ISN’T COMMENTING ON THE ARRANGEMENT. A SOURCE FAMILIAR WITH THE DEAL SAYS THE FUNDING COMES FROM ISRAEL AND UNNAMED ARAB NATIONS—NOT WASHINGTON. MANY ARAB NATIONS SUPPORT ISRAEL’S FIGHT AGAINST HAMAS AND OTHER IRANIAN-BACKED PROXIES, BUT DON’T ANNOUNCE THE SUPPORT PUBLICLY FOR FEAR OF RETALIATION.

THE THOUGHT OF USING PRIVATE CONTRACTORS IS A LITTLE WORRISOME TO CRITICS OF THE DEAL. PRIVATE SECURITY FIRMS DID PLAY CONTROVERSIAL ROLES IN PAST CONFLICTS. LIKE IN 2007, WHEN BLACKWATER CONTRACTORS KILLED 14 CIVILIANS IN IRAQ, SPARKING OUTRAGE AND LEGAL ACTION. ANALYSTS SAY DEPLOYING AMERICAN SECURITY PERSONNEL IN GAZA COULD CREATE SIMILAR RISKS, GIVEN THE FRAGILE SITUATION.

FOR NOW, THOUGH, THE CHECKPOINT REMAINS OPERATIONAL, AND THOUSANDS OF DISPLACED PALESTINIANS CONTINUE MOVING THROUGH IT AS THEY RETURN TO NORTHERN GAZA. THE CEASEFIRE, BROKERED BY EGYPT AND QATAR, BEGAN ON JANUARY 19th AS PART OF A 60-DAY INITIAL PHASE.

Where is the asteroid now?

Scientists in Chile first spotted the asteroid by telescope in December 2024. They’ve named it 2024 YR4.

The space rock is anywhere from 130 to 330 feet across, scientists estimated.

Researchers said the asteroid is currently headed away from Earth, but said it came within 500,000 miles of Earth on Christmas Day. That’s about twice the distance of the moon.

What are the chances of the asteroid hitting Earth?

NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies director, Paul Chodas, said there is a 99% chance that the asteroid will miss Earth.

However, he said the small 1 % chance that it might hit our planet deserves attention.

Chodas explained that as it makes a path around the sun, its risk of hitting Earth might drop.

Experts said the space rock will gradually fade from view over the next few months and even the most powerful of telescopes will not be able to pinpoint it.

Once out of sight, it will not become visible again until 2028.

In the meantime, scientists are looking over data and surveys of space dating back to 2016 to track its history.

The European Space Agency reported that the Earth gets hit by an asteroid of this size every few thousand years.

This particular asteroid is now atop the agency’s risk list.

What kind of damage could this asteroid cause?

NASA said that if the asteroid turns out to be on the large end of its estimated range, it could produce a blast of about 30 miles, including the impact site.

The damage could range from massive explosions to fires, or perhaps an earthquake or tsunamis, according to the University of California at Berkeley.

If the asteroid does make its way toward Earth, experts dated the impact at around Dec. 22, 2032. The exact location of where it could hit is unknown.

AS THE SPACE WARS AMONG BILLIONAIRES CONTINUE TO RECEIVE
ALL SORTS OF COVERAGE, A RECENT DISCOVERY IS GETTING THE ATTENTION OF SCIENTISTS AND ASTRONOMERS. NASA SAYS A NEWLY DISCOVERED ASTEROID HAS A VERY SMALL CHANCE OF HITTING THE EARTH IN THE YEAR 2032.
SCIENTISTS FIRST SPOTTED IT LAST MONTH, BY TELESCOPE, IN THE COUNTRY OF CHILE. THEY’VE NAMED IT 2024 YR4. THE SPACE ROCK IS BELIEVED TO BE ANYWHERE FROM 130 TO 330 FEET ACROSS. IT IS CURRENTLY HEADING AWAY FROM EARTH. THEY SAY IT CAME WITHIN 500,000 MILES OF EARTH ON CHRISTMAS DAY, WHICH IS ABOUT TWICE THE DISTANCE OF THE MOON, WHICH IS ABOUT 239,000 MILES AWAY.
THE DIRECTOR OF NASA’S CENTER FOR NEAR EARTH OBJECT STUDIES, PAUL CHODAS, SAYS THERE IS A 99 % CHANCE IT WILL MISS THE EARTH BUT THE SMALL
ONE PERCENT CHANCE THAT IT MIGHT, DESERVES ATTENTION.
HE SAYS AS THE ASTEROID MAKES A PATH AROUND THE SUN, ITS RISK OF HITTING EARTH MIGHT ACTUALLY DROP.
ADDING TO THE INTRIGUE, EXPERTS SAY THE ASTEROID WILL GRADUALLY FADE FROM VIEW OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS AND EVEN THE MOST POWERFUL OF TELESCOPES WILL **NOT** BE ABLE TO PINPOINT IT. ONCE OUT OF SIGHT, IT WILL NOT BECOME VISIBLE AGAIN, UNTIL 2028.
IN THE MEANTIME, SCIENTISTS ARE NOW LOOKING OVER DATA AND SURVEYS OF SPACE, DATING BACK TO 2016, TO TRACK THE ASTEROID’S HISTORY. THE EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY REPORTS THAT THE EARTH GETS HIT BY AN ASTEROID, THIS SIZE EVERY FEW THOUSAND YEARS. THIS PARTICULAR ASTEROID IS NOW ATOP THE AGENCY’S RISK LIST.
NASA’S CHODAS SAYS IF THE ASTEROID TURNS OUT TO BE ON THE LARGE END OF ITS ESTIMATED RANGE IT COULD PRODUCE A BLAST OF ABOUT 30 MILES, INCLUDING THE IMPACT SITE. THE DAMAGE COULD RANGE FROM MASSIVE EXPLOSIONS, TO FIRES OR PERHAPS EVEN AN EARTHQUAKE OR TSUNAMIS, ACCORDING TO THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA AT BERKELEY.
IF IT DOES COME DOWN, THEY HAVE PEGGED THE DATE AT AROUND DECEMBER 22ND, 2032, BUT THE EXACT LOCATION IS UNKNOWN. FOR MORE UNBIASED UPDATES, DOWNLOAD THE STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS APP

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have launched Black Hawk helicopter patrols to enhance security along the U.S.-Canada border, providing rapid response capabilities for illegal crossings, human trafficking and drug smuggling. The patrols began earlier this week and now cover Alberta, Quebec and Manitoba.

RCMP officials said the helicopters will monitor all illegal border activity, including crossings between ports of entry and criminal networks involved in smuggling.

The increased enforcement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump pressures Canada to tighten border security, even threatening tariffs on Canadian exports. In response, Ottawa committed $1.3 billion to border security, investing in surveillance drones and new monitoring technology.

Black Hawk helicopters are being deployed to remote border areas

RCMP officials said the helicopters will allow teams to respond more quickly, particularly in remote areas where extreme weather and rugged terrain make border crossings dangerous.

In an interview with Global News, the RCMP’s chief superintendent and director general of serious and organized crime and border integrity said the agency began evaluating border security needs in 2023. While the Canadian government initially considered purchasing new aircraft, the RCMP opted to lease Black Hawks for immediate deployment.

“The range and speed of the Black Hawk allows it to be deployed very quickly to any location along the Alberta border, providing the RCMP with an enhanced rapid-response capability within the province,” RCMP Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland, regional commander for federal policing in the northwest region, said.

Officials say there is no border ‘crisis’

Despite increased enforcement, Canadian authorities maintain there is no migration “crisis” at the U.S.-Canada border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection recorded more than 1.5 million migrant encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border last year, compared to just 23,000 apprehensions at the northern border.

Beyond migration enforcement, the Black Hawks will also target human trafficking and drug smuggling. While U.S. agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the northern border last year, that amount is compared to the 21,000 pounds intercepted at the U.S.-Mexico border. Still, officials said cross-border drug trafficking remains a growing concern.

Broader border security measures coming into place

The helicopter patrols are part of a larger strategy that includes new surveillance towers and joint enforcement efforts with the U.S. The RCMP has also deployed officers to coordinate with Integrated Border Enforcement Teams on the ground to detect and intercept illegal activity.

Residents near the border may see or hear the helicopters regularly, but RCMP officials say these are routine patrol operations and do not pose an immediate public safety threat.

THE ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE THIS WEEK LAUNCHED BLACK HAWK HELICOPTER PATROLS TO STRENGTHEN SECURITY ALONG THE U.S.-CANADA BORDER. THE MOVE FOLLOWS WEEKS OF U-S PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP THREATENING TO IMPOSE TARIFFS ON CANADA AND MEXICO IF THEY DO NOT STEP UP BORDER ENFORCEMENT EFFORTS TO STYMIE ILLEGAL CROSSINGS, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, AND DRUG SMUGGLING.

IN RESPONSE, OTTAWA HAS INCREASED PATROLS AND RECENTLY COMMITTED ANOTHER $1.3 BILLION TO BORDER SECURITY, INVESTING IN SURVEILLANCE DRONES AND NEW MONITORING TECHNOLOGY.

THE NEWLY ANNOUNCED BLACK HAWK PATROLS WILL MONITOR ALL ILLEGAL BORDER ACTIVITY, INCLUDING CROSSINGS BETWEEN PORTS OF ENTRY AND CRIMINAL NETWORKS INVOLVED IN SMUGGLING.

RCMP BORDER OFFICIALS TOLD GLOBAL NEWS THE AGENCY ACTUALLY BEGAN EVALUATING BORDER SECURITY NEEDS IN 2023.

AND WHILE CANADIAN AUTHORITIES INSIST THERE IS NO MIGRATION “CRISIS” AT THE BORDER — NOTING THERE WERE JUST 23,000 APPREHENSIONS LAST YEAR — THEY DO ACKNOWLEDGE HEIGHTENED CONCERNS FROM BOTH U.S. AND CANADIAN OFFICIALS.

BEYOND MIGRATION ENFORCEMENT, THE BLACK HAWKS WILL ALSO TARGET HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND DRUG SMUGGLING. WHILE U.S. AGENTS SEIZED 43 POUNDS OF FENTANYL AT THE NORTHERN BORDER LAST YEAR, THAT’S A FRACTION OF THE 21-THOUSAND POUNDS INTERCEPTED AT THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDER. STILL, OFFICIALS SAY CROSS-BORDER DRUG TRAFFICKING REMAINS A GROWING CONCERN.

FOR NOW, RESIDENTS NEAR THE BORDER CAN EXPECT TO SEE AND HEAR THE HELICOPTERS REGULARLY. THE RCMP SAYS THESE ARE STANDARD PATROL OPERATIONS AND THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE PUBLIC SAFETY THREAT.

What happened?

The man and truck were swallowed by the sinkhole on Tuesday morning, Jan. 27. The sinkhole has reportedly grown to about the length of an Olympic swimming pool and is some 30 feet deep.

Officials said the driver spoke to rescuers shortly after becoming trapped. However, authorities have not heard from him since then.

What are the latest rescue operations?

Rescuers attempted to dig out the driver but were unsuccessful. They also flew in a drone to see if it was possible to climb down.

They even tried to lift the truck with cranes but could only pull out the loading platform. It left behind the cab where the driver is believed to be stuck.

Authorities said they suspect the growing sinkhole is the result of corroded sewage lines with punctures in the pipes leaking water into the soil. This has created unstable ground under the concrete.

Why haven’t rescuers climbed down?

Officials have not ventured into the hole over fears of falling debris and are waiting until they can stabilize the surrounding area.

There are efforts to build a nearly 100-foot slope to reach the man, but authorities warn it may take days to construct.

What does it have to do with showers and laundry?

Government officials called on 1.2 million people across a dozen towns and cities in the area to hold off on bathing and doing laundry to reduce the amount of leaking wastewater and sewage in the hole, compromising rescue operations.

Officials also said the sinkhole contains a gas pipeline and have ordered the evacuation of 200 homes in the area.

A growing problem

Sinkholes have become a growing problem in Japan as the country’s aging sewage pipelines fall into disrepair.

MORE THAN A MILLION PEOPLE IN JAPAN ARE BEING TOLD TO AVOID TAKING SHOWERS OR DOING LAUNDRY AS RESCUERS TRY TO REACH A MAN WHO HAS BEEN STUCK IN A MASSIVE SINKHOLE FOR DAYS.

THE 74-YEAR-OLD AND HIS THREE-TON TRUCK WERE SWALLOWED UP BY THE SINKHOLE TUESDAY MORNING.

THE HOLE HAS NOW REPORTEDLY GROWN TO ABOUT THE LENGTH OF AN OLYMPIC SWIMMING POOL AND IS SOME 30 FEET DEEP.

THE DRIVER SPOKE TO RESCUERS SHORTLY AFTER BECOMING TRAPPED BUT AUTHORITIES SAY THEY HAVE NOT HEARD FROM HIM SINCE THEN.

RESCUERS HAVE ATTEMPTED TO DIG OUT THE DRIVER AND FLEW A DRONE INTO THE SINKHOLE TO SEE IF IT WAS POSSIBLE TO CLIMB DOWN.

THEY EVEN TRIED TO LIFT THE TRUCK WITH CRANES BUT COULD ONLY PULL OUT THE LOADING PLATFORM, LEAVING BEHIND THE CAB, WHERE THE DRIVER IS BELIEVED TO BE STUCK.

AUTHORITIES SUSPECT THE GROWING SINKHOLE IS THE RESULT OF CORRODED SEWAGE LINES WITH PUNCTURES IN THE PIPES LEAKING WATER INTO SOIL, CREATING UNSTABLE GROUND UNDER THE CONCRETE.

OFFICIALS HAVE NOT VENTURED INTO THE HOLE OVER FEARS OF FALLING DEBRIS AND ARE WAITING UNTIL THEY CAN STABILIZE THE SURROUNDING AREA.

THERE ARE EFFORTS TO BUILD A NEARLY 100 FOOT SLOPE TO REACH THE MAN BUT AUTHORITIES WARN IT MAY TAKE DAYS TO CONSTRUCT.

GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS HAVE CALLED ON ONE-POINT-TWO MILLION PEOPLE ACROSS A DOZEN TOWNS AND CITIES IN THE AREA TO HOLD OFF ON BATHING AND DOING LAUNDRY TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF LEAKING WASTEWATER AND SEWAGE IN THE HOLE, COMPROMISING RESCUE OPERATIONS.

OFFICIALS ALSO SAY THE SINKHOLE CONTAINS A GAS PIPELINE AND ORDERED THE EVACUATION OF 200 HOMES IN THE AREA BECAUSE OF THAT.

SINKHOLES HAVE BEEN POPPING UP MORE FREQUENTLY IN JAPAN AS THE COUNTRY’S AGING SEWAGE PIPELINES FALL INTO DISREPAIR.

President Donald Trump’s first week in his second term ended with a visit to the fire-ravaged Los Angeles area Friday, Jan. 24, and a handshake from an unlikely ally in California, Gov. Gavin Newsom. Despite Trump saying he may withhold federal aid if the state doesn’t change its water policies, the two came together for a common cause to help the victims of the wildfires.

Unity has been a central theme by our country’s two most recent presidents. Former president Joe Biden spoke about it in his inaugural address in 2021.

“To restore the soul and secure the future of America requires so much more than words, it requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: unity,” Biden said.

Four years later, Trump referenced it in his inaugural speech at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 20.

“National unity is now returning to America and confidence and pride is soaring like never before,” Trump said. “In everything we do, my administration will be inspired by a strong pursuit of excellence and unrelenting success.”

But just how united are these United States of America?

Each state has its own leadership, with the governor sitting at the top. The voice of the governor is an important one, an elected messenger of his or her constituents representing the different views of one state to another.

Trump’s inauguration and his first week as the 47th president had all 50 governors — Democrat and Republican — talking. To get a sense of the state of the United States, Straight Arrow News looked at each governor’s online presence during the past week — their social media posts, website updates, and news stories — to see how they responded to the same recent moments in our nation’s history.

While it may not come as a shock that many Republican governors’ reactions to a second Trump administration were favorable – and differed greatly from their democratic counterparts – it is worth noting that sometimes the reactions varied even within the same party.

How did governors react to Trump’s inauguration?

Several Republican governors posted to social media about their presence at the ceremony and their positive outlook on Trump’s next four years.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott wrote, “The golden age of America has begun under his leadership.”

North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong wrote, “We are beyond excited to begin working with  [the president] to grow the economy, secure our borders, unleash American energy, support our farmers and ranchers, strengthen our military, defend the second amendment and protect our citizens from federal overreach.”

A handful of GOP governors described Trump’s presidency as a new era — a comeback for America — including Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Idaho Gov. Brad Little, Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe, current Homeland Security Secretary and former South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, and Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp wrote, “It’s a great day to celebrate a new chapter for America As we prepare to work with this new administration to keep our nation safe, prosperous, and free!”

And while these social posts only allude to the previous administration, Vermont’s Republican Gov. Phil Scott mentioned the former president by name.

Scott wrote, “It’s my hope the new administration and new congress use the peaceful transfer of power as an opportunity to start fresh, work together and collaborate to the benefit of all Americans. I also want to extend my appreciation to President Biden and Vice President Harris for their service to our nation.”

Some Democratic governors homed in on appreciation for that peaceful transfer of power in their social media messages.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore wrote, “The peaceful transfer of power is not something we invented – it’s something we inherited from our founders…”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro posted, “For the 47th time in our nation’s history, we have inaugurated a new president, completing the peaceful transfer of power and proving that our democracy continues to endure.”

How did Democrats use flag status to show unity with the president?

Ahead of his inauguration, Trump aired his grievances that American flags would be at half-staff when he became president due to the mourning period for late President Jimmy Carter.

However, things changed after House Speaker Mike Johnson announced the flags at the U.S. Capitol would fly at full-staff on Inauguration Day. Once sworn-in, now-President Trump signed a proclamation ordering flags should be flown at full mast on all future Inauguration Days.

Dozens of governors, Democrats included, began to raise the flags in their states on Trump’s Inauguration Day to commemorate the occasion, including North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein, Kentucky’s Andy Beshear, Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. However, according to KARE 11 News, the former Democratic vice-presidential candidate issued his order less than an hour before flags were to be lowered once again.

Others, like Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, kept their flags as is.

“While Governor Laura Kelly continues with her directive that flags throughout Kansas remain at half-staff in honor of former president Jimmy Carter’s passing, she wishes to congratulate President Trump ahead of his inauguration,” her office said in a statement.

How did the governors respond to Trump’s executive orders?

Once in office, Trump took little time to use his presidential powers. He signed a series of executive orders on topics ranging from illegal immigration, energy and diversity. Republican governors cheered these moves.

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen wrote, “President Trump’s day one executive actions and orders are impressive and are the first steps in delivering on his promise to make America secure, strong, prosperous, and great again.”

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said, “West Virginia has your back, Mr. President. The green new deal is dead!”

Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy thanked the president for the executive order opening parts of the state up for oil and gas drilling, writing, “Alaska is unleashed!”

Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt reacted to Trump’s order that the federal government recognize only two sexes, writing, “…President Trump’s order recognizing the two sexes will stop the radical gender ideology that’s infiltrated our federal government…”

But it was Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship that received the biggest online response from Democratic governors.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker wrote, “Trump’s proposal to strip birthright citizenship from those born in this nation is unconstitutional. In Illinois, we follow the law…”

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy responded, “The constitution could not be more clear: citizenship of children born in the U.S. does not depend on the citizenship of their parents. That principle is fundamental to who we are as a nation and what it means to be an American.”

Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey said, “The constitution is clear — every child born within our borders deserves the same rights and freedoms as anyone else.”

Arizona Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs applauded Trump’s actions on border security, but disagreed on his birthright citizenship order.

“Ending birthright citizenship is unconstitutional and un-American. We should protect what makes our country exceptional, not tear it down. I urge the president to reconsider a policy that attacks our country’s ideals and does nothing to secure our border,” Hobbs wrote.

Can there be unity in America?

After more than 20 states filed suit saying the order violated the 14th Amendment, a federal district judge in Seattle temporarily blocked the order from taking effect.

Joining in the Democratic backlash over Trump’s birthright citizenship order was California Gov. Newsom, who wrote it was “unconstitutional.”

He also reacted to Trump pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Agreement. Newsom posted images of the deadly wildfires that devastated Southern California, along with the caption, “If you don’t believe in science, believe your own damn eyes.”

The words of these governors — Republican and Democratic — show that the country does not always form one view and there will be arguments. As a Los Angeles Times columnist wrote last year: “Unity does not mean being silent.”

Despite disagreements, there are signs (like a handshake from sparring leaders) that show unity, when Americans with differing viewpoints come together for a common purpose, can be achieved in these United States.

L3: TRUMP’S FIRST WEEK GETS WIDE RANGE OF REACTIONS FROM U.S. GOVERNORS

[CRAIG NIGRELLI]

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S FIRST WEEK IN HIS SECOND TERM ENDED WITH A VISIT TO THE FIRE-RAVAGED LOS ANGELES AREA AND GETTING A HANDSHAKE FROM AN UNLIKELY ALLY — CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM. THE TWO COMING TOGETHER FOR A COMMON CAUSE.

UNITY. IT’S BEEN A CENTRAL THEME BY OUR COUNTRY’S TWO MOST RECENT PRESIDENTS.

FORMER PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN SPOKE ABOUT IT IN HIS INAUGURAL ADDRESS IN 20-21.

“To restore the soul and secure the future of America requires so much more than words it requires the most elusive of all things in a democracy: unity.”

FOUR YEARS LATER — PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP REFERENCED IT IN HIS INAUGURAL SPEECH

“National unity is now returning to America and confidence and pride is soaring like never before. In everything we do my administration will be inspired by a strong pursuit of excellence and unrelenting success.”

BUT JUST HOW UNITED ARE THESE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

EACH STATE HAS IT OWN LEADERSHIP – WITH THE GOVERNOR SITTING AT THE TOP.   THE VOICE OF THE GOVERNOR IS AN IMPORTANT ONE – AN ELECTED MESSENGER OF HIS OR HER CONSTITUENTS – REPRESENTING THE DIFFERENT VIEWS FROM ONE STATE TO ANOTHER.

TRUMP’S INAUGURATION AND HIS FIRST DAYS IN OFFICE AS THE 47TH PRESIDENT HAD ALL 50 GOVERNORS —  DEMOCRAT AND REPUBLICAN — TALKING.

TO GET A SENSE OF THE STATE OF THE UNITED STATES – WE LOOKED AT EACH GOVERNOR’S ONLINE PRESENCE DURING THE PAST WEEK –  THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS, WEBSITE UPDATES, AND NEWS STORIES — TO SEE HOW THEY RESPONDED TO THE SAME MOMENTS IN OUR NATION’S HISTORY.

SO LET’S START AT THE BEGINNING – TRUMP’S INAUGURATION.

“Please raise your right hand and repeat after me…”

SEVERAL REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS POSTED TO SOCIAL MEDIA ABOUT THEIR PRESENCE AT THE CEREMONY AND THEIR POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON TRUMP’S NEXT FOUR YEARS.

LIKE – TEXAS GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT WHO WROTE “The Golden Age of America has begun under his leadership.”

AND NORTH DAKOTA GOVERNOR KELLY ARMSTRONG WHO WROTE “We are beyond excited to begin working with  [the president] to grow the economy, secure our borders, unleash American energy, support our farmers and ranchers, strengthen our military, defend the Second Amendment and protect our citizens from federal overreach.”

AND A HANDFUL OF GOP GOVERNORS DESCRIBING TRUMP’S PRESIDENCY AS A NEW ERA — A COMEBACK FOR AMERICA —  INCLUDING GEORGIA GOVERNOR BRIAN KEMP WHO WROTE “It’s a great day to celebrate a new chapter for America as we prepare to work with this new administration to keep our nation safe, prosperous, and free!”

AND WHILE THESE SOCIAL POSTS ONLY ALLUDE TO THE PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION –

VERMONT’S REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR PHIL SCOTT MENTIONED THE FORMER PRESIDENT BY NAME – WRITING, “It’s my hope the new administration and new Congress use the peaceful transfer of power as an opportunity to start fresh, work together and collaborate to the benefit of all Americans. I also want to extend my appreciation to President Biden and Vice President Harris for their service to our nation.”

SOME DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS HOMED IN ON THE APPRECIATION FOR THAT PEACEFUL TRANSFER OF POWER IN THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA MESSAGES.

MARYLAND GOVERNOR WES MOORE WROTE, “The peaceful transfer of power is not something we invented – it’s something we inherited from our founders…”

PENNSYLVANIA GOVERNOR JOSH SHAPIRO POSTED, “For the 47th time in our nation’s history, we have inaugurated a new president, completing the peaceful transfer of power and proving that our democracy continues to endure.”

OTHER DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS CHOSE TO SHOW A SIGN OF UNITY THROUGH THE FLYING OF THE AMERICAN FLAG.

CAPITOL WOULD FLY AT FULL-STAFF ON INAUGURATION DAY

— AND ONCE SWORN-IN, PRESIDENT TRUMP SIGNED THIS PROCLAMATION –

“Lastly, WE HAVE A PROCLAMATION ORDERING ALL FUTURE INAUGURATION DAYS THAT FLAGS SHALL BE FLOWN AT FULL MAST.”

DOZENS OF GOVERNORS – DEMOCRATS INCLUDED – BEGAN TO RAISE THE FLAGS IN THEIR STATES ON INAUGURATION DAY TO COMMEMORATE THE OCCASION —

— INCLUDING NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR JOSH STEIN, KENTUCKY’S ANDY BESHEAR, MICHIGAN’S GRETCHEN WHITMER AND MINNESOTA GOVERNOR TIM WALZ  – THOUGH AS KARE 11 NEWS REPORTED – THE FORMER DEMOCRATIC VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ISSUED HIS ORDER LESS THAN AN HOUR BEFORE FLAGS WERE TO BE LOWERED ONCE AGAIN.

AND OTHERS – LIKE KANSAS GOVERNOR LAURA KELLY – KEPT THEIR FLAGS AS IS – SAYING — “While Governor Laura Kelly continues with her directive that flags throughout Kansas remain at half-staff in honor of former President Jimmy Carter’s passing, she wishes to congratulate President Trump ahead of his inauguration…”

ONCE IN OFFICE – PRESIDENT TRUMP TOOK LITTLE TIME TO USE HIS PRESIDENTIAL POWERS – SIGNING A SERIES OF EXECUTIVE ORDERS – ON TOPICS RANGING FROM ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, ENERGY, AND DIVERSITY.

REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS CHEERED THESE MOVES –

NEBRASKA GOVERNOR JIM PILLEN WROTE, “President Trump’s Day One executive actions and orders are impressive and are the first steps in delivering on his promise to make America secure, strong, prosperous, and great again.”

WEST VIRGINIA GOVERNOR PATRICK MORRISEY SAID, “West Virginia has your back, Mr. President. The Green New Deal is dead!”

ALASKA GOVERNOR MIKE DUNLEAVY THANKED THE PRESIDENT FOR THE EXECUTIVE ORDER OPENING PARTS OF THE STATE UP FOR OIL AND GAS DRILLING, WRITING, “Alaska is unleashed!”

AND OKLAHOMA GOVERNOR KEVIN STITT REACTING TO TRUMP’S ORDER THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RECOGNIZE ONLY TWO SEXES, WRITING, “…President Trump’s order recognizing the two sexes will stop the radical gender ideology that’s infiltrated our federal government…”

BUT IT WAS THIS EXECUTIVE ORDER THAT RECEIVED THE BIGGEST RESPONSE FROM DEMOCRATIC GOVERNORS ONLINE.

“This next order relates to the definition of Birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment of the United States.”

“That’s a good one, birthright, that’s a big one.”

“What about that one in the courts? That one is likely to be challenged.”

“Could be. We think we have good grounds, but you could be right. I mean, you’ll find out.”

ILLINOIS GOVERNOR JB PRITZKER WROTE, “Trump’s proposal to strip birthright citizenship from those born in this nation is unconstitutional. In Illinois, we follow the law…”

NEW JERSEY GOVERNOR PHIL MURPHY RESPONDED WITH, “The Constitution could not be more clear: citizenship of children born in the U.S. does not depend on the citizenship of their parents. That principle is fundamental to who we are as a nation and what it means to be an American.”

AND MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNOR MAURA HEALEY SAID, “The Constitution is clear — every child born within our borders deserves the same rights and freedoms as anyone else.”

AND WHILE ARIZONA GOVERNOR KATIE HOBBS APPLAUDED TRUMP’S ACTIONS ON BORDER SECURITY SHE HAD TO THIS TO SAY ABOUT THE BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENHIP ORDER – “Ending birthright citizenship is unconstitutional and un-American. We should protect what makes our country exceptional, not tear it down.”

AFTER MORE THAN 20 STATES FILED SUIT – SAYING THE ORDER VIOLATED THE 14TH AMENDMENT – A FEDERAL DISTRICT JUDGE IN SEATTLE TEMPORARILY BLOCKED THE ORDER FROM TAKING EFFECT.

JOINING IN THE DEMOCRATIC BACKLASH OVER TRUMP’S BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP ORDER WAS CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR NEWSOM WHO WROTE IT WAS “UNCONSTITUTIONAL.”

HE ALSO REACTED TO TRUMP PULLING THE U.S. OUT OF THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT – POSTING IMAGES OF THE DEADLY WILDFIRES THAT DEVASTATED SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – WRITING, “IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN SCIENCE, BELIEVE YOUR OWN DAMN EYES.”

THE WORDS OF THESE GOVERNORS – REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC — SHOW THAT THE COUNTRY DOES NOT ALWAYS FORM ONE VIEW. AS A LOS ANGELES TIMES COLUMNIST WROTE LAST YEAR –  “UNITY DOES NOT MEAN BEING SILENT.”

DESPITE DISAGREEMENTS – THERE ARE SIGNS THAT UNITY — WHEN AMERICANS WITH DIFFERING VIEWPOINTS COME TOGETHER FOR A COMMON PURPOSE – CAN BE ACHIEVED IN THESE UNITED STATES.

After overthrowing Assad, Syrian rebel leader assumes interim presidency

Listen
Share

Less than two months after the overthrow of Bashar Assad, whose family ruled Syria for more than 50 years, rebel leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammad al-Golani, has been declared as the country’s president. The move comes after a meeting during the week of Jan. 26 of military commanders, who took part in battles to take the country during December.

What will a new government look like in Syria?

The new leader said his first priority, as leader of Syria, will be to fill a vacuum in government in a legitimate and legal way. In doing so, al-Sharaa canceled the existing constitution and disbanded the national army, as well as opposition parties. He will now form a temporary legislative council during a transitional period.

What’s the history of the new leader?

He headed the former al-Qaida affiliate group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, a U.S.-designated terror organization. At one time, al-Sharaa fought alongside al-Qaida in Iraq as an anti-American jihadist.

The announcement of the new government structure came at a meeting that was titled “The Conference for Announcing the Victory of the Syrian Revolution.” The newly appointed leader called for Syria to have civil peace and said military and security forces must be rebuilt, plus an economic infrastructure must be developed.

What will happen to those who supported the ousted regime?

Following the takeover of Damascus, HTS offered amnesty for members of the Syrian army, asked police officers to stay on duty, and ordered former officials to identify themselves to the rebels in exchange for their safety.

What is the initial reaction to the new Syrian leader?

Some experts believe al-Sharaa is now trying to secure his status as a strongman ruler under single-party rule. However, he has pledged to have an inclusive government that will eventually hold elections.

Many in Syria cheered the announcements, with positive demonstrations on the streets in Damascus reported; however, some fear the way the appointment was made, as well as the lack of clarity on what’s coming next.

For now, Assad is gone, and for the first time since the 1970s, someone other than an Assad rules Syria.

TikTok’s ‘No Buy 2025’ gains momentum amid social media consumerism

Kennedy Felton Lifestyle Correspondent/Producer

As 2025 begins, many people are setting new goals. While some focus on fitness, others take budgeting to the next level with “No Buy 2025.”

The social media movement encourages people to cut back on spending — or, in some cases, stop shopping entirely. The goal is to reduce impulse purchases, prioritize financial stability, and rethink consumer habits in an era dominated by TikTok consumerism.

Rethinking spending habits

They say, “A penny saved is a penny earned,” and for many, saving money has become a priority.

According to The Wall Street Journal, rising inflation and economic uncertainty have led more people to focus on what they already own instead of chasing the latest viral products. Some have committed to low-buy lifestyles, limiting purchases to only necessities. Others have embraced complete spending freezes as part of the No Buy 2025 challenge.

One stay-at-home mom featured in the report eliminated hair treatments, manicures and buying new water bottles to pay off credit card debt.

Social media’s role in the trend

On TikTok, creators document their No Buy 2025 journeys and share strict spending rules. Some only replace toiletries when they run out, while others avoid installment payment services like Klarna and Afterpay to curb unnecessary spending.

More than just saving money, an online community has formed around frugal living. TikTok users share budgeting strategies, money-saving tips and alternatives to excessive spending.

One TikTok creator shared that they completely turned off their heat to reduce energy bills. Instead, they rely on multiple comforters and layering up at night.

This frugal lifestyle trend is driven by global concerns, according to research from the University of Surabaya. The study found that Gen Z consumers are spending more sparingly due to economic uncertainty, the depletion of resources and global uncertainties.

A growing interest in financial minimalism

The Journal reports that Google searches for “no-buy challenge” have increased 40% year-over-year. The data suggests more people are seeking ways to embrace financial minimalism and reduce unnecessary spending.

The rise of No Buy 2025 is happening when TikTok consumerism is stronger than ever.

With over a billion active users, TikTok has become a major driver of impulse buying. The hashtag #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt has amassed billions of views, highlighting the platform’s influence on shopping trends.

Many content creators profit from promoting viral products through TikTok Shop, earning commissions for every sale. Retail experts say the platform blurs the lines between social media, entertainment and shopping.

[KENNEDY FELTON]

As the new year gets underway, many people are setting goals—some for fitness, and some pushing budgeting to the next level with “No Buy 2025.” The social media movement is all about spending less, or in some cases, nothing at all.

They say a penny saved is a penny earned, and for many, saving is a top priority. According to The Wall Street Journal, rising inflation and economic uncertainty are leading more people to rethink their spending habits. Instead of chasing the latest viral products, they’re focusing on what they already own to cut costs.

One stay-at-home mom featured in The Wall Street Journal has cut out things like hair treatments, manicures, and even new water bottles to pay off thousands in credit card debt.

AND SHE’S NOT ALONE. ON TIKTOK, CREATORS ARE SHARING THEIR OWN ‘NO BUY’ RULES – LIKE ONLY BUYING TOILETRIES WHEN THEY COMPLETELY RUN OUT… OR AVOIDING INSTALLMENT PAYMENT PLANS LIKE KLARNA OR AFTERPAY.

But it’s not just about saving money. Social media creators are building entire communities around frugality—sharing tips and strategies to help others embrace a low buy or no buy lifestyle.

“I DON’T TURN ON THE HEAT. I’LL REALLY BUNDLE UP AND I HAVE TWO COMFORTERS WHICH I WRAP MYSELF IN WHEN I SLEEP AT NIGHT.”

For some, frugality means making serious sacrifices like turning off the heat entirely to lower utility bills. While some creators have embraced this lifestyle for months, others are just now joining as part of their New Year’s resolutions. And it’s gaining traction! The Wall Street Journal reports Google searches for ‘No Buy Challenge’ have surged 40 percent year over year, reflecting a growing interest in financial minimalism.

Research supports that Gen Z’s frugality is driven by deeper concerns. A 2022 study from Indonesia found that younger generations are spending more sparingly due to factors like climate change and global uncertainty. The study highlights six dimensions of frugal behavior, including—planning purchases, bargain hunting, and prioritizing durability over trends.

This is all taking place in the age of TikTok consumerism, where people are tempted to buy the latest “must-have gadgets.” With more than a billion active users, the app has become a major driver of impulse buying with hashtags like “TikTok Made Me Buy It” to show for it, while creators advertise their latest finds as a way to put some money in their own pockets through commission.

“IT’S FUSING SOCIAL MEDIA, ENTERTAINMENT, AND SHOPPING…”

So while some users are pledging to spend less, others are being influenced to buy more—highlighting the ongoing battle between financial discipline and social media-driven consumerism.
