China’s military drills simulate blocking US forces from Taiwan

Listen
Share

  • China is conducting military drills to practice blocking U.S. forces from interfering in a potential takeover of Taiwan. A Japanese think tank confirms these exercises are specifically designed to prevent U.S. access to the waters around Taiwan using an A2AD (anti-access/area denial) strategy.
  • In response, the U.S. and its allies are preparing countermeasures, including training with advanced weapons like the AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM), which is designed to penetrate enemy defenses from long range.
  • While China aims to keep U.S. forces out of the first and second island chains, stand-off weapons like the JASSM could disrupt this strategy, making a full blockade of Taiwan difficult to execute.

The People’s Republic of China is using live drills to practice keeping United States armed forces from interfering in a hostile Chinese takeover of Taiwan. While this may fall under the “things we already know” category, a Japanese think tank is making the point crystal clear.

Japanese analysis confirms China’s strategy

A recently published analysis from the Japanese Institute for National Fundamentals found that the large-scale military exercises China conducted in early December were designed to practice stopping U.S. forces from approaching the waters surrounding Taiwan.

China wants to employ an A2AD strategy, which stands for “anti-access/area denial.” As the name suggests, this strategy is designed to prevent the U.S. from gaining access to Taiwan and the surrounding region.

To achieve this, China aims to prevent U.S. warships and aircraft from operating in what is called the “First Island Chain,” which extends from Japan south through the Philippines and into Indonesia.

Chinese Naval presence near Taiwan

At the beginning of December 2024, 90 Chinese naval ships were spotted near Taiwan. According to the JINF, 18 destroyers and frigates were deployed east of the first island chain. There, the ships practiced maneuvers designed to keep U.S. forces locked behind the “Second Island Chain,” which stretches from Japan through Guam and into eastern Indonesia.

The role of microchips in the conflict

This is not the first time the discussion around Taiwan’s strategic importance has come up. At its core, Taiwan’s significance comes down to microchips.

While China has long maintained that Taiwan is part of its territory, the self-governing island also produces some of the world’s most advanced microchips. These components are crucial for everything from national defense to consumer electronics.

U.S. and allies move to counter China’s plans

Given Taiwan’s importance, the United States and its Indo-Pacific allies are working to deter China from its current trajectory and, if necessary, prepare to confront the PRC directly.

To that end, while China was conducting its blockade exercises around Taiwan, U.S. Marines on Guam were training with a new addition to their arsenal—the AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM).

Built by Lockheed Martin, the JASSM is a stealthy, semi-autonomous, precision-guided air-to-ground missile with a 1,000-pound warhead. Its effective range depends on the variant, but even the basic version has a range of over 500 nautical miles (approximately 600 miles). The U.S. Air Force first used JASSMs in Syria in 2018.

In August 2023, the U.S. Marine Corps announced the successful integration of the JASSM into its fleet of F/A-18 Hornets. Recent images show a USMC Hornet equipped with the missile during a training relocation program in late January. This training allowed Marine crews stationed in the continental U.S. to enhance their tactical proficiency in Guam, preparing for potential future conflicts in a contested environment.

JASSM variants and strategic use

The AGM-158 comes in several variants, with extended-range models capable of targeting both stationary and moving ground targets, as well as ships. As a stand-off weapon, the JASSM is designed to be fired from outside an enemy’s air defenses.

While China may rely on an A2AD strategy to keep the U.S. at bay, munitions like the AGM-158 will be deployed to disrupt that plan. Russia has struggled to stop stealthy cruise missiles used by Ukraine, and if China faces similar challenges, a full blockade of Taiwan may not be feasible.

THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA IS USING LIVE DRILLS TO PRACTICE KEEPING UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES FROM INTERFERING IN A HOSTILE CHINESE TAKE OVER OF TAIWAN. WHILE YOU MAY BE ABLE TO FILE THIS UNDER THE “THINGS WE ALREADY KNOW” CATEGORY, A JAPANESE THINK-TANK IS MAKING THE POINT CRYSTAL CLEAR.

A RECENTLY PUBLISHED ANALYSIS FROM THE JAPANESE INSTITUTE FOR NATIONAL FUNDAMENTALS FOUND THE LARGE SCALE MILITARY EXERCISES THE PRC RAN AT THE BEGINNING OF DECEMBER WERE DESIGNED TO PRACTICE STOPPING U.S. FORCES FROM APPROACHING THE WATERS SURROUNDING TAIWAN

CHINA WANTS TO EMPLOY AN A2AD STRATEGY, WHICH IS SHORTHAND FOR ‘ANTI-ACCESS/AREA DENIAL’ AND IT’S EXACTLY WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE: STOP THE U.S. FROM GETTING ACCESS TO TAIWAN AND THE AREA AROUND IT.
TO DO THAT, CHINA WANTS TO PREVENT U.S. WARSHIPS AND AIRCRAFT FROM OPERATING IN WHAT’S CALLED THE ‘FIRST ISLAND CHAIN,’ WHICH RUNS FROM JAPAN SOUTH TO INDONESIA.

90 CHINESE NAVAL SHIPS WERE SPOTTED NEAR TAIWAN AT THE BEGINNING OF LAST DECEMBER, AND OF THOSE, THE JINF SAYS 18 DESTROYERS AND FRIGATES DEPLOYED TO THE EAST OF THIS FIRST ISLAND CHAIN. THERE, THE SHIPS PRACTICED WHAT CHINA THINKS IT WOULD TAKE TO KEEP U.S. FORCES LOCKED BEHIND THE ‘SECOND ISLAND CHAIN,’ WHICH GOES FROM JAPAN, THROUGH GUAM AND INTO EASTERN INDONESIA.

THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME WE’VE TALKED ABOUT THESE ISLAND CHAINS AND WHY CHINA IS TRYING TO TAKE TAIWAN. SO, BE SURE TO LOOK UP OUR PAST REPORTING ON THE STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS APP FOR A FULL BACKGROUND, BUT IT BASICALLY COMES DOWN TO MICROCHIPS.
YES, THE PRC HAS LONG MAINTAINED TAIWAN IS A PART OF CHINA, BUT THE SELF-GOVERNING ISLAND IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST ADVANCED MICROCHIPS. AND EVERYTHING FROM NATIONAL DEFENSE TO MY KIDS’ HIGH-SCORE ON FORTNITE IS DEPENDENT ON MICROCHIPS.

THAT’S WHY THE UNITED STATES AND ITS ALLIES IN THE INDO-PACIFIC ARE MOVING TO DETER CHINA FROM ITS CURRENT TRAJECTORY IF POSSIBLE, AND FIGHT THE PRC HEAD ON IF NECESSARY.

TO THAT END, WE SHOULD POINT OUT WHILE CHINA WAS PRACTICING ITS BLOCKADE OF TAIWAN SOME UNITED STATES MARINES ON GUAM WERE TRAINING WITH A NEW-TO-THE-CORPS MUNITION; THE AGM-158 JOINT AIR-TO SURFACE STANDOFF MISSILE.

BUILT BY LOCKHEED MARTIN, THE JASSM IS A STEALTHY, SEMI-AUTONOMOUS CONVENTIONAL AIR-TO-GROUND PRECISION GUIDED MISSILE WITH A THOUSAND POUND WARHEAD. THE EFFECTIVE RANGE OF THE JASSM DEPENDS ON ITS SPECIFIC VARIANT, BUT LOCKHEED SAYS EVEN THE BASIC ONE IS GOOD TO OVER 500 NAUTICAL MILES, OR ABOUT 600 REGULAR MILES FOR THE NON-NAUTICAL.
JASSMS WERE FIRST USED BY THE U.S. AIR FORCE IN SYRIA IN 2018.

THEN LAST AUGUST, THE USMC ANNOUNCED THE STEALTHY CRUISE MISSILE WAS SUCCESSFULLY INTEGRATED INTO ITS FLEET OF HORNETS, AND THESE ARE SOME OF THE FIRST IMAGES OF A USMC F/A-18 HORNET OUTFITTED WITH THEM.
THE PHOTOS WERE TAKEN DURING A TRAINING RELOCATION PROGRAM IN LATE JANUARY, WHERE MARINE CREWS STATIONED IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES GOT TO SPEND SOME TIME IN GUAM SHARPENNING THEIR TACTICAL PROFICIENCY WHILE PERFORMING FLIGHT OPERATIONS IN WHAT COULD VERY WELL BE A CONTESTED ENVIRONMENT IN THE YEARS AHEAD.

AGAIN, THE AGM-158 COMES IN SEVERAL VARIANTS. THE BIGGER THE VARIANT THE MORE RANGE IT’LL HAVE. THEY CAN BE USED AGAINST MOST ANY GROUND TARGET, MOVING OR STATIONARY, AND THE LONG-RANGE VARIETY IS EFFECTIVE AGAINST SHIPS AS WELL.

AND AS THE JASSM NAME INDICATES, AGM-158 MISSILES ARE STAND-OFF WEAPONS. MEANING THEY’RE MEANT TO BE FIRED FROM OUTSIDE AN ENEMY’S AIR DEFENSES.

SO, WHILE CHINA MAY WANT TO EMPLOY AN A2AD METHOD TO BOX OUT THE U.S., MUNITIONS LIKE THE AGM-158, IN ALL ITS CURRENT AND FUTURE ITERATIONS, WILL BE DEPLOYED TO PUNCH HOLES IN THAT STRATEGY AT EVERY TURN. RUSSIA PROVED ITS INABILITY TO STOP STEALTHY CRUISE MISSILES FIRED BY UKRAINE, AND IF CHINA HAS SIMILAR PROBLEMS, AN ACTUAL BLOCKADE OF TAIWAN MAY NOT BE POSSIBLE.

  • The bills come after Gov. Gavin Newsom called a special session.
  • California Republican lawmakers said the plan took away from dealing with the state’s wildfires and high cost of living.

California lawmakers approved a $50 million bill package Monday, Feb. 3 that includes funding to defend the state’s policies against the Trump administration. The deal comes two months after Gov. Gavin Newsom called a special session following President Donald Trump’s election in an effort to, what he called,Trump-proof” the state.

What are California’s Democratic lawmakers saying?

California’s Democratic assembly speaker Robert Rivas said before the Monday, Feb. 3, that Trump’s administration is a threat to constitutional rights.

“Californians are being threatened by an out-of-control administration in Washington that doesn’t care about the constitution, that thinks there are no limits to its path.” Rivas said. “We do not trust President Donald Trump.”

What are California Republican lawmakers saying?

California’s Republican leader James Gallagher called the plan a political stunt that took away time from dealing with the state’s wildfires and the high cost of living.

“Note to CA Dem legislators: authorizing 25 million dollars of our taxpayer money to pay lawyers to sue Donald Trump is not tackling affordability and it does nothing to protect us from wildfire. Priorities,” Gallagher posted on X.

Newsom expanded the special session last month to also pass fire-relief funding, but Republicans argued the funding was premature, noting the proposals were revealed before Trump returned to office.

Monday’s so-called “Trump-proof” bills now go to Gov. Newsom for his signature.

  • President Trump suggested that Ukraine could trade its rare earth elements in exchange for continued U.S. military aid, linking these resources to future support. This proposal has faced criticism from Russia and mixed reactions from Ukraine.
  • Ukrainian media indicated that the proposal might align with President Zelenskyy’s strategic plans, while German Chancellor Scholz criticized the idea.
  • Russia also condemned the proposal, calling it commercializing military aid.

President Donald Trump proposed that Ukraine trade rare earth elements for additional U.S. military aid, linking these vital resources to continued support in its war against Russia. The idea has drawn criticism from the Kremlin, while Ukrainian media suggests it may align with Kyiv’s own strategic plans.

“We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earths,” Trump said. “We’re putting in hundreds of billions of dollars. They have great rare earths. And I want security of the rare earths, and they’re willing to do it.”

What does Trump’s proposal entail?

Speaking at the White House during the week of Feb. 3, Trump indicated that he wants some form of compensation for the nearly $300 billion the U.S. has provided to Ukraine in its ongoing war against Russia. The president suggested that Ukraine could leverage its rare earth elements as part of a deal to secure future aid.

Why are rare earth elements important?

Rare earths refer to a group of 17 elements essential for industries such as electronics, defense and renewable energy. China currently dominates global production, supplying about 70% of the market, while the U.S. has been working to reduce its dependence on Beijing for these critical materials.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz criticized Trump’s remarks, arguing that Ukraine will need these resources for post-war rebuilding efforts and calling the idea of trading rare earths for aid “very selfish, very self-centered.”

Is Ukraine on board with trading rare earths for military aid?

Ukrainian media outlets have reported that such a deal may have originated in Kyiv as part of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s broader “victory plan,” which involves economic and security arrangements with Western allies.

What happens next?

Meanwhile, Russia condemned Trump’s proposal, stating that it commercializes military assistance and arguing that the conflict would end sooner without U.S. involvement.

“If we call things as they are, this is a proposal to buy help — in other words, not to give it unconditionally, or for some other reasons, but specifically to provide it on a commercial basis,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said. “It would be better of course for the assistance to not be provided at all, as that would contribute to the end of this conflict.”

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP PROPOSED PROVIDING UKRAINE WITH MORE MILITARY AID-

IN EXCHANGE FOR RESOURCES THAT HAVE A RISING VALUE IN TODAY’S ECONOMY.

SPEAKING AT THE WHITE HOUSE THIS WEEK, TRUMP TRUMP INDICATED HE WANTS SOME SORT OF COMPENSATION FROM UKRAINE-

FOR THE CLOSE TO 300 BILLION DOLLARS IN SUPPORT THE U.S. HAS PROVIDED IN THE NATION’S ONGOING WAR AGAINST RUSSIA.

THE PRESIDENT SUGGESTED THAT UKRAINE LEVERAGE ITS RARE EARTH ELEMENTS AS PART OF A DEAL TO SECURE FUTURE ASSISTANCE.

RARE EARTHS REFER TO A GROUP OF 17 ELEMENTS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL IN VARIOUS INDUSTRIES-

INCLUDING ELECTRONICS, DEFENSE, AND RENEWABLE ENERGY.

CHINA DOMINATES GLOBAL RARE EARTH PRODUCTION, SUPPLYING ABOUT 70% OF THE MARKET-

WHILE THE U.S. HAS BEEN LOOKING TO REDUCE ITS DEPENDENCE ON BEIJING FOR THESE CRITICAL MATERIALS.

GERMAN CHANCELLOR OLAF SCHOLZ ARGUES UKRAINE WILL NEED THESE NATURAL RESOURCES FOR ITS POST-WAR REBUILD-

How the NFL is bucking the trend of corporations abandoning DEI

Listen

  • During a pre-Super Bowl LIX conference on Monday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell defended the league’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives.
  • Goodell defended the league’s diversity policies by saying it’s not just a trend, pointing to the decades old “Rooney Rule.”
  • The NFL commitment to DEI comes when many companies are abandoning such initiatives.

At a time when many companies are bucking DEI initiatives, the NFL is continuing to embrace theirs as the league prepares for its biggest event of the year, the Super Bowl.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell defended the league’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts during a pre-Super Bowl LIX conference on Monday, Feb. 3, that was covered by CBS Sports.

Point phone camera here

What did Goodell say?

“We got into Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts because we thought it was the right thing for the National Football League and we’re going to continue those efforts because we’ve not only convinced ourselves, I think we’ve proven that it makes the NFL better,” Goodell said. “So, we’re not in this because it’s a trend to get in or a trend to get out of it.”

The NFL has DEI rules dating back decades. In 2003, the league implemented the Rooney Rule, named after the late-Dan Rooney, the former owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers and former chairman of the league’s diversity committee. Under the mandate, each NFL team is required to interview at least two minority candidates outside of their organizations to fill vacancies at head coach or general manager.

“The Rooney Rule for us, there’s no requirement to hire a particular individual on the basis of race or gender,” Goodell said. “It’s simply on the basis of looking at a canvas of candidates that reflect our communities and to look at the kind of talent that exists there.”

What’s the bigger picture?

Last year, the NFL made gains in minority hires, which saw the hiring of four minority coaches among eight vacancies.

So far this year, only one out of seven teams with head coaching vacancies have hired a minority head coach, with the New York Jets picking up former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

Critics said the NFL’s Rooney Rule requirement is just a formality for many teams, claiming the NFL isn’t doing enough to get qualified minority candidates hired.

Diversity advocates point to what they believe is a recent example of this with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars interviewed a black coach, Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, as they were working to hire Liam Coen. The team announced Coen as their head coach the following day.

The NFL’s chief diversity and inclusion officer said the league is working on bringing more transparency to the hiring process while making sure teams perform extensive searches with a diverse and large pool of candidates.

Why is the NFL’s DEI push important?

The NFL’s promise to diversify the hiring process comes as President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to end DEI programs and companies like Target, Amazon and Walmart are abandoning DEI initiatives.

AT A TIME WHEN MANY COMPANIES ARE BUCKING D-E-I INITIATIVES THE N-FL IS CONTINUING TO EMBRACE THEIRS AS THE LEAGUE PREPARES FOR IT’S BIGGEST EVENT OF THE YEAR.

THE SUPER BOWL.

N-F-L COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL DEFENDING THE LEAGUE’S DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION EFFORTS DURING A PRE-SUPER BOWL 59 CONFERENCE MONDAY COVERED BY C-B-S SPORTS.

[ROGER GOODELL]

WE GOT INTO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION EFFORTS BECAUSE WE THOUGHT IT WAS THE RIGHT THING FOR THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE AND WE’RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO THOSE EFFORTS BECAUSE WE’VE NOT ONLY CONVINCED OURSELVES, I THINK THAT WE’VE PROVEN THAT IT DOES MAKE THE N-F-L BETTER. SO, WE’RE NOT IN THIS BECAUSE IT’S A TREND TO GET IN OR A TREND TO GET OUT OF IT.

[JACK AYLMER]

THE N-F-L HAS D-E-I RULES DATING BACK DECADES.

IN 2003 THE LEAGUE IMPLEMENTED THE ROONEY RULE, NAMED AFTER THE LATE-DAN ROONEY, THE FORMER OWNER OF THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS AND FORMER CHAIRMAN OF THE LEAGUE’S DIVERSITY COMMITTEE.

UNDER THE MANDATE, EACH N-F-L TEAM IS REQUIRED TO INTERVIEW AT LEAST TWO MINORITY CANDIDATES OUTSIDE OF THEIR ORGANIZATIONS TO FILL VACANCIES AT HEAD COACH OR GENERAL MANAGER.

[ROGER GOODELL]

THE ROONEY RULE FOR US. THERE’S NO REQUIREMENT TO HIRE A PARTICULAR INDIVIDUAL ON THE BASIS OF RACE OR GENDER. IT’S SIMPLY ON THE BASIS OF LOOKING AT A CANVAS OF CANDIDATES THAT REFLECT OUR COMMUNITIES AND TO LOOK AT THE KIND OF TALENT THAT EXISTS THERE.

[JACK AYLMER]

LAST YEAR THE N-F-L MADE GAINS IN MINORITY HIRES, WHICH SAW THE HIRING OF FOUR MINORITY COACHES AMONG EIGHT VACANCIES.

SO FAR THIS YEAR, ONLY ONE OUT OF SEVEN TEAMS WITH HEAD COACHING VACANCIES HAVE HIRED A MINORITY HEAD COACH, WITH THE NEW YORK JETS PICKING UP FORMER DETROIT LIONS DEFENSE COORDINATOR AARON GLENN.

CRITICS SAY THE N-F-L’S ROONEY RULE REQUIREMENT IS JUST A FORMALITY FOR MANY TEAMS, CLAIMING THE N-F-L ISN’T DOING ENOUGH TO GET QUALIFIED MINORITY CANDIDATES HIRED.

THE TEAM ANNOUNCED COEN AS THEIR NEW HEAD COACH THE FOLLOWING DAY.

THE N-F-L’S CHIEF DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION OFFICER SAYS THE LEAGUE IS WORKING ON BRINGING MORE TRANSPARENCY TO THE HIRING PROCESS WHILE MAKING SURE TEAMS PERFORM EXTENSIVE SEARCHES WITH A DIVERSE AND LARGE POOL OF CANDIDATES.

THE N-F-L’S PROMISE TO DIVERSIFY THE HIRING PROCESS COMES AS PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP HAS SIGNED AN EXECUTIVE ORDER TO END D-E-I PROGRAMS AND COMPANIES LIKE TARGET, AMAZON AND WALMART ARE ABANDONING D-E-I INITIATIVES.

US monarch butterfly population nears 30-year low

Listen
Share

  • The monarch butterfly population in the western U.S. hit a nearly 30-year low in 2024. That’s a 96% drop compared to the population in 2023.
  • Experts blamed a combination of vanishing habitats, climate change and pesticides.
  • Due to declining populations of pollinators, monarchs are expected to become a protected species in the U.S. in 2025.

Fewer monarch butterflies have spent winter in the western U.S. as factors like pesticides, a disappearing habitat, and climate change have affected the population. The population is now at a 30-year low.

What is known about monarch butterflies in western America?

Since 1997, the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation has been monitoring the overwintering monarch butterfly population west of the Rocky Mountains.

During the winter, the butterflies migrate to the California coast — northern Baja and inland California — and Arizona.

The society said it recorded its lowest number of monarch butterflies ever in 2024.

When the Xerces Society started tracking the species in 1997, it counted 1.2 million winged insects, the highest number ever recorded in the area.

In 2024, it saw a 96% drop in the population compared to the year before, counting just 9,119 monarch butterflies.

It’s the second-lowest number they’ve ever counted in 28 years of tracking data. The lowest was 1,901 monarch butterflies in 2020.

What’s causing the population decline?

Monarchs across North America have faced mounting threats. The biggest threat is the vanishing milkweed, which is the host plant for caterpillars that metamorphosize into butterflies.

Experts said a combination of drought, wildfires, agriculture and urban development have caused the plants to disappear. Plus, pesticides have contaminated many of those that remain.

However, the Xerces Society said it’s unclear what caused such a massive drop in the Western monarch butterfly population between 2023 and 2024.

Still, it serves as another example of a bigger trend.

In December 2024, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced it plans to add monarch butterflies to its threatened species list by the end of 2025, making it illegal to kill them purposely or transport them.

What about butterflies in the eastern US?

It’s currently unknown if the eastern U.S. monarch population saw the same drop in 2024.

Monarchs travel to Mexico for the winter and are monitored by the World Wildlife Fund, which has not yet released its 2024 data.

How can Americans help?

There are several ways to help revive the dwindling population of these much-needed pollinators.

The Xerces Society’s website is full of ways Americans can help, from planting certain seeds in their gardens to managing habitats specifically for monarch butterflies.

FEWER MONARCH BUTTERFLIES ARE SPENDING THEIR WINTER IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES AS FACTORS LIKE PESTICIDES, A DISAPPEARING HABITAT AND CLIMATE CHANGE TAKE THEIR TOLL, ACCORDING TO THE NONPROFIT MONITORING THE POLLINATORS.

THE XERCES SOCIETY FOR INVERTEBRATE CONSERVATION HAS BEEN MONITORING THE OVERWINTER MONARCH BUTTERFLY POPULATION WEST OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS SINCE 19-97.

DURING THE WINTER, THE BUTTERFLIES MIGRATE TO THE CALIFORNIA COAST, NORTHERN BAJA CALIFORNIA, AND INLAND CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA.

THE SOCIETY SAYS IN 20-24 – THEY RECORDED THEIR LOWEST NUMBER OF MONARCH BUTTERFLIES EVER.

WHEN THEY STARTED KEEPING TRACK IN 19-97 – THEY COUNTED 1 POINT 2 MILLION OF THE BEAUTIFUL INSECTS, THE HIGHEST NUMBER EVER RECORDED IN THE AREA.

BUT IN 20-24 – THEY SAW A 96 PERCENT DROP IN THE POPULATION COMPARED TO THE YEAR BEFORE…

COUNTING JUST OVER 91-HUNDRED MONARCH BUTTERFLIES.

IT’S THE SECOND-LOWEST NUMBER THEY’VE EVER COUNTED IN 28 YEARS OF TRACKING DATA…

THE LOWEST WAS JUST BARELY 19-HUNDRED IN 20-20.

MONARCHS ACROSS NORTH AMERICA HAVE FACED MOUNTING THREATS IN RECENT YEARS – THE BIGGEST BEING VANISHING MILKWEED.

MILKWEED IS THE HOST PLANT FOR CATERPILLARS THAT METAMORPHASIZE INTO THE BUTTERFLIES.

EXPERTS SAY A COMBINATION OF DROUGHT, WILDFIRES, AGRICULTURE AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT HAVE CAUSED THE PLANT TO DISAPPEAR… AND PESTICIDES HAVE CONTAMINATED MANY OF THOSE THAT REMAIN.

THOUGH, THE XERCES SOCIETY SAYS IT’S NOT CLEAR **WHAT EXACTLY** CAUSED SUCH A MASSIVE DROP IN THE WESTERN POPULATION IN JUST ONE YEAR.

STILL, IT’S ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A BIGGER TREND.

JUST IN DECEMBER – THE U-S FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE ANNOUNCED IT PLANS TO ADD MONARCH BUTTERFLIES TO ITS THREATENED SPECIES LIST BY THE END OF 20-25… MAKING IT ILLEGAL TO PURPOSELY KILL THE BUTTERFLIES OR TRANSPORT THEM.

WE DON’T KNOW YET IF THE EASTERN U-S’ POPULATION OF MONARCHS SAW THE SAME POPULATION DROP IN 20-24.

THEY TRAVEL TO MEXICO FOR THE WINTER AND ARE MONITORED BY THE WORLD WILDLIFE FUND – WHICH HAS NOT YET RELEASED ITS 20-24 DATA.

President Donald Trump is planning to issue an executive order Tuesday, Feb. 4 to withdraw the United States from the U.N. Human Rights Council and extend a funding ban for the U.N. Palestinian Relief Agency, UNRWA. This comes on the same day the White House is set to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a longtime critic of the U.N. and UNRWA. What is Trump’s history with the U.N. Human Rights Council?

Trump’s expected withdrawal from the Human Rights Council also won’t be a first for him. He did the same his last time in office. Then-U.N. Envoy Nikki Haley said the move was over a “chronic bias” against Israel from the body, which is made up of 47 U.N. member states who are elected every four years.

Trump’s latest move will continue the United States’ back-and-forth relationship with the council, which was created during the George W. Bush administration.

Presidents Bush and Trump did not engage with the council, while presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden did.

However, the Biden administration did pause funding to UNRWA, following the reports staffers were involved in the October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel.

What’s the latest on UNRWA in Gaza?

UNRWA was the main agency providing humanitarian aid for Gaza, which Israel recently banned.

UNRWA said the ban will have major consequences for those dealing with the destruction from the war in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

There’s currently a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas aiming to end the fighting and free hostages held by Hamas in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

TRUMP’S EXPECTED WITHDRAWAL FROM THE HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL ALSO WON’T BE A FIRST FOR HIM …

HE DID THE SAME HIS LAST TIME IN OFFICE … WITH THEN-U-N ENVOY NIKKI HALEY SAYING THE MOVE WAS OVER A “CHRONIC BIAS” AGAINST ISRAEL FROM THE BODY, WHICH IS MADE UP OF 47 U-N MEMBER STATES WHO ARE ELECTED EVERY FOUR YEARS.

TRUMP’S LATEST MOVE WILL CONTINUE THE UNITED STATES’ BACK AND FORTH RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COUNCIL, WHICH WAS CREATED DURING THE GEORGE W BUSH ADMINISTRATION.

PRESIDENTS BUSH AND TRUMP DID NOT ENGAGE WITH THE COUNCIL, WHILE PRESIDENTS BARACK OBAMA AND JOE BIDEN DID.

HOWEVER, THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION DID PAUSE FUNDING TO UNRWA … FOLLOWING THE REPORTS STAFFERS WERE INVOLVED IN THE OCTOBER 20-23 ATTACK BY HAMAS ON ISRAEL.

UNRWA WAS THE MAIN AGENCY PROVIDING HUMANITARIAN AID FOR GAZA … WHICH ISRAEL RECENTLY BANNED.

UNRWA SAYS THE BAN WILL HAVE MAJOR CONSEQUENCES FOR THOSE DEALING WITH THE DESTRUCTION FROM THE WAR IN THE GAZA STRIP, THE WEST BANK AND EAST JERUSALEM.

THERE’S CURRENTLY A CEASEFIRE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND HAMAS … AIMING TO END THE FIGHTING AND FREE HOSTAGES HELD BY HAMAS IN GAZA IN EXCHANGE FOR PALESTINIAN PRISONERS HELD BY ISRAEL.

  • Ecuador is now entering the tariff fray. Its president announced that it is levying a 27% fee on Mexican goods entering the country.
  • The two countries have been at odds, diplomatically, since the arrest of an Ecuadorian official last year, inside the Mexican Embassy.
  • The president of Ecuador is an ally of Donald Trump who attended the inauguration and is now up for reelection himself on Sunday.

The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, entered the tariff fray on Monday, Feb. 3. He announced that his country is slapping a 27% levy on Mexican goods coming into the South American country.

Why is Ecuador targeting Mexico?

Noboa said the move is aimed at boosting local manufacturers. However, some believe it might be an attempt to curry favor with the Trump administration.

On Monday, President Trump announced a 30-day pause on tariffs with Mexico after it agreed to send an additional 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, helping to stop the flow of migrants crossing into the United States illegally.

What is the connection to the Trump administration?

Noboa attended the Trump inauguration last month in Washington and called Trump’s election win a victory for Latin America.

Why are relations between Ecuador and Mexico strained?

Ecuador is currently locked in a diplomatic dispute with Mexico, stemming from the arrest of former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas last year. Police broke into the Mexican Embassy to take him into custody.

Ecuador says he’s wanted for fraud and that Mexico illegitimately granted him political asylum. Critics accused Ecuador of breaking international law.

Will the tariffs have a big impact?

Trade between the countries is now reportedly very low. The Mexican central bank indicates that exports to Ecuador amount to less than 1% of the country’s total exports.

Noboa is running in the national election on Sunday, Feb. 9, hoping to win a full term after he took over 18 months ago for former President Guillermo Lasso.

Trump admin halts then restores crucial weapons shipments to Ukraine

Listen

  • The Trump administration briefly paused U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine, but then quickly resumed deliveries. This move has reignited questions about the future of American military aid to Ukraine.
  • The brief delay highlights differing factions within the Republican Party, with some wanting to continue supporting Ukraine and others seeking to cut off aid altogether.
  • The pause has raised concerns about Ukraine’s ability to defend against Russian advances, with critics warning that cutting military assistance could hurt Ukraine’s position in talks with Russia.

The Trump administration briefly halted U.S. weapons shipments to Ukraine before resuming deliveries, according to sources familiar with the matter. The pause has renewed concerns over the future of American military support as officials inside the White House debate the scope of continued assistance to Kyiv.

President Donald Trump, who campaigned on the promise that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, has not announced any new military aid or financial packages since taking office. While shipments approved under the Biden administration continue to arrive, uncertainty remains over how long previously approved deliveries will last and whether additional support will follow.

Internal White House divisions on aid policy

The White House has not officially confirmed the pause in weapons shipments, but sources say internal disagreements over U.S. policy contributed to the delay. Trump administration officials are divided, with some advocating for maintaining military assistance while others push to scale back or eliminate support.

Critics argue that cutting military aid could weaken Ukraine’s position in negotiations with Russia. Military analysts note that previous supply disruptions have already affected Ukraine’s ability to defend against Russian advances.

Impact of delays on the battlefield

Ukraine’s military has dealt with supply shortages before. Soldiers on the front lines report going months without receiving critical armored vehicles, ammunition, and air defense systems. A backlog in Congress and internal policy debates during Biden’s final months in office further delayed key shipments, leaving Ukrainian forces vulnerable.

The Institute for the Study of War reported that by late 2024, Russian forces were advancing by approximately 20 square kilometers per day, reclaiming previously contested territory. While military analysts caution that aid alone does not determine Ukraine’s success, Pentagon officials acknowledge that without continued U.S. support, Ukraine could face further setbacks.

Pentagon: Most promised aid has been delivered

While shipments continue to arrive, officials say a significant portion of the aid promised for 2024 has yet to be delivered. The Pentagon reported that as of January, 89% of critical munitions and 94% of anti-armor systems had been sent to Ukraine. However, delays in congressional approvals and a flurry of authorizations in the final weeks of the Biden administration meant that more equipment was approved than could be immediately shipped.

Uncertainty over future U.S. support

The Trump administration has not clarified its long-term strategy regarding Ukraine. Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Gen. Keith Kellogg, declined to comment on future military aid, saying only that “leverage is critical in negotiations.”

Ukrainian officials have expressed concern that a shift in U.S. policy could weaken their ability to defend against further Russian advances. While aid shipments have resumed, the long-term trajectory of American support remains uncertain.

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP’S ADMINISTRATION BRIEFLY PAUSED U.S. WEAPONS SHIPMENTS TO UKRAINE, BUT THEN QUICKLY RESUMED THE DELIVERIES.
THE MOVE IS REIGNITING QUESTIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN MILITARY AID TO THE EMBATTLED DEMOCRACY.

PRESIDENT TRUMP CAMPAIGNED ON THE PROMISE HE COULD END THE WAR IN 24 HOURS, AND THE BRIEF DELAY HIGHLIGHTS THE DIFFERING FACTIONS WITHIN THE REPUBLICAN PARTY–SOME WANT TO KEEP SUPPORTING THE U-S ALLY, WHILE OTHERS WANT TO CUT OFF AID ALTOGETHER, AND WITH NO NEW WEAPONS OR FINANCIAL PACKAGES ANNOUNCED SINCE TRUMP TOOK OFFICE, CONCERNS ARE GROWING OVER HOW LONG PREVIOUSLY APPROVED SHIPMENTS WILL LAST—AND WHAT THE ADMINISTRATION’S NEXT MOVE WILL BE.

THE WHITE HOUSE HASN’T OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED THE PAUSE, BUT SOURCES SAY INTERNAL DISAGREEMENTS OVER U.S. POLICY PLAYED A PART .

AS TRUMP’S WHITE HOUSE WEIGHS HOW MUCH-IF ANY– SUPPORT SHOULD CONTINUE, CRITICS FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE POLITICAL AISLE SAY CUTTING MILITARY ASSISTANCE COULD HURT UKRAINE’S POSITION IN TALKS WITH RUSSIA.
UKRAINE’S MILITARY DEALT WITH THE EFFECTS OF SUPPLY DISRUPTIONS BEFORE, AND ARE AGAIN SOLDIERS ON THE FRONT LINES REPORT MONTHS WITHOUT RECEIVING CRITICAL ARMORED VEHICLES, AMMUNITION, AND AIR DEFENSE SYSTEMS.

DELAYS IN CONGRESS DURING THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION AND INTERNAL WHITE HOUSE DEBATES STALLED KEY SHIPMENTS, LEAVING UKRAINIAN FORCES OUTGUNNED AND VULNERABLE. THE INSTITUTE FOR THE STUDY OF WAR REPORTS IN LATE 2024, RUSSIAN FORCES WERE ADVANCING BY ABOUT 20 SQUARE KILOMETERS PER DAY, RECLAIMING PREVIOUSLY CONTESTED TERRITORY.

MILITARY ANALYSTS CAUTION THAT AID ALONE DOES NOT DETERMINE UKRAINE’S SUCCESS. HOWEVER, PENTAGON OFFICIALS ACKNOWLEDGE WITHOUT CONTINUED U.S. SUPPORT, UKRAINE COULD FACE FURTHER SETBACKS.

SHIPMENTS APPROVED DURING BIDEN’S TERM ARE STILL ARRIVING. THEY’RE LATE THANKS TO THE CONGRESSIONAL BACKLOG AND THEN A FLURRY OF APPROVALS BY BIDEN IN THE LAST WEEKS OF HIS PRESIDENCY MEANT THERE WAS MORE TO MOVE THAN COULD BE MOVED.

OFFICIALS NOW SAY A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE AID PROMISED LAST YEAR NEVER ARRIVED. AS OF JANUARY, THE PENTAGON SAID 89% OF CRITICAL MUNITIONS AND 94% OF ANTI-ARMOR SYSTEMS WERE DELIVERED.

THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION HAS NOT CLARIFIED WHETHER IT WILL CONTINUE SENDING WEAPONS TO KYIV. TRUMP’S UKRAINE ENVOY, GEN. KEITH KELLOGG, DECLINED TO COMMENT ON FUTURE AID, SAYING ONLY THAT “LEVERAGE IS CRITICAL IN NEGOTIATIONS.”

UKRAINE US WORRIED THE SHIFT IN POLICY COULD WEAKEN ITS ABILITY TO DEFEND AGAINST RUSSIAN ADVANCES,

How many eggs are impacted?

According to CNN, Waffle House serves 272 million eggs per year, and it is the restaurant’s most ordered item.

Avian flu has been impacting farmers and the nation’s egg supply since January of 2022, causing 108 million to be slaughtered, including 75 million egg-laying birds, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Will it get any better anytime soon?

The outbreak of avian flu has only gotten worse since then. In 2024, the virus led to around 17 million egg-laying hens being slaughtered between November and December.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the average price for a dozen large grade-A eggs, which are the kind Waffle House serves, was $4.15 in December 2024, which is up from $3.65 in November 2024.

The CEO of the American Egg Board warned that as bird flu continues to spread, the egg supply, and therefore prices, will continue to be impacted.

Potentially dangerous midweek ice storm headed for the Midwest and Northeast

Listen

Forecasters predict more than 94 million people will be affected by an incoming winter storm, which will likely include ice and snow. AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham says a clash of warm, humid air and cold, arctic air will result in a myriad of impactful weather.

Buckingham is forecasting 1 to 3 inches of snow, from eastern Montana into northern Michigan, on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Also, 3 to 6 inches of snow are expected in the northern section of North Dakota and on to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Some localized areas might see up to 10 inches of the white stuff.

A narrow band of snow is also expected to develop across Pennsylvania on Wednesday, in advance of the ice. There will further be snow along the Pennsylvania to Maryland state line.

Which areas will get hit the hardest?

A quarter of an inch of ice, or more, could occur on the I-80 and I-94 corridors in various states on Wednesday, including Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. AccuWeather also says significant ice storm impacts are expected from the central Appalachians, through northern Pennsylvania and into southern New York.

What are some of the hazards?

Travel conditions are expected to be dangerous in several cities, including Harrisburg, Scranton, State College and Williamsport, Pennsylvania, as well as Binghamton, New York and Cumberland, Maryland. Downed tree limbs and power outages are possible.

AccuWeather chief meteorologist Jonathan Porter says road closures are also possible, which would impact businesses and the supply chain. The I-95 corridor from Washington to Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and upstate New York is expected to get a shorter period of icing before conditions switch over to rain. Most of New England will also see a few inches of snow.

What about the rest of the week?

Colder air and gusty winds on the backside of the storm could make it difficult to restore power and treat icy roads.
