The U.S. government wants to break up Google. The Department of Justice asked a federal judge late Wednesday night, Nov 20, to force the sale of the Google Chrome web browser to keep the company from continuing to squash competition through its dominant search engine.

This comes after a landmark ruling earlier this year found Google violated U.S. antitrust law to maintain an abusive monopoly over the past decade.

In a 23-page document, the Justice Department also called for tighter restrictions to prevent Android from favoring Google’s search engine. Justice lawyers also asked the judge to allow websites to opt out of having data trained by Google’s AI models.

“The playing field is not level because of Google’s conduct, and Google’s quality reflects the ill-gotten gains of an advantage illegally acquired,” the Justice Department wrote in its filing.

Google has promised to appeal. It had previously called the Justice Department’s proposals “staggering.”

“DOJ’s approach would result in unprecedented government overreach that would harm American consumers, developers, and small businesses — and jeopardize America’s global economic and technological leadership at precisely the moment it’s needed most,” Google said in a statement earlier Wednesday.

Bloomberg reported that if the move is approved by a judge, Chrome could sell for as much as $20 billion.

Ukraine has accused Russia of launching intercontinental ballistic missiles. The FBI says it thwarted an attack on the New York Stock Exchange. And the Pacific Northwest is experiencing a one-two punch as a “bomb cyclone” combines with an atmospheric river. These stories and more highlight your Unbiased Updates for Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024.

Ukraine says Russia fires intercontinental ballistic missile

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched an intercontinental ballistic missile during a morning attack Thursday, Nov. 21. If confirmed, this would be the first time Russia has used the powerful long-range weapon since the start of the war.

Russia’s actions follow Ukraine reportedly firing U.S. and British-made missiles at targets inside Russia this week. Russia has said Ukraine’s use of western weapons to strike inside the country would be seen as an escalation in the war.

Ukraine said Thursday’s attack from Russia targeted critical infrastructure. Ukraine’s air force said it shot down six cruise missiles during the attack.

It is not clear yet what, specifically, the intercontinental ballistic missile targeted or whether it caused any damage in Ukraine.

Florida man charged in plot to blow up New York Stock Exchange

A Florida man is facing charges after being accused of planning to blow up the New York Stock Exchange. The FBI said agents arrested Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, 30, on Wednesday, Nov. 20.

The investigation started in February after the FBI received a tip that Yener was keeping bombmaking supplies in a storage unit. Investigators said they found bombmaking sketches, watches with timers, electronic circuit boards and other electronics that could be used for building explosive devices in Yener’s Coral Springs storage unit.

Court documents indicate Yener also told undercover FBI agents he wanted to set off the bomb the week before Thanksgiving. He’s also quoted as saying “tons of people” would support an attack on the stock exchange and that his goal was to “reset” or “reboot” the U.S. government.

House Ethics Committee reaches ‘no agreement’ on release of Gaetz report

The House Ethics Committee was not able to come to an agreement Wednesday, Nov. 20, on whether to release the report on its investigation into former Congressman Matt Gaetz, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for attorney general.

Since 2021, the committee had been looking into allegations of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use against the Florida lawmaker, though, it paused its investigation for a time while the Justice Department conducted a probe of its own. The DOJ ultimately did not file any charges due to credibility problems with the witnesses.

The House committee ended its investigation last week after Gaetz resigned as a member of Congress following Trump’s nomination. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing.

Wednesday’s closed-door meeting in Washington, D.C. lasted a little over two hours.

Republican Congressman Michael Guest of Mississippi, who chairs the committee, told reporters before the start of the meeting that some of the reservations he had about releasing the report were that it was not complete and had “not gone through the review process.”

Meanwhile, ranking Democrat Congresswoman Susan Wild of Pennsylvania said the decision came down to party lines with the five Republicans on the panel siding against releasing the report and the five Democrats voting in favor of it. Wild said the committee will convene again on Dec. 5 to “further consider the matter.”

Following the panel’s meeting, two Democratic congressmen each moved to compel a vote from the full House on the issue.

The Trump transition team has called the accusations against Gaetz “baseless.”

Vice President-elect JD Vance was at the Capitol Wednesday accompanying Gaetz to meetings with Republican senators. Vance was looking to shore up support prior to a confirmation hearing next year. Gaetz told reporters Wednesday night that senators have been “supportive,” and they have promised “a fair process.”

Deadly ‘bomb cyclone’ combines with atmospheric river to wreak more havoc

Parts of the west coast are now facing a new threat as a deadly “bomb cyclone” winds down: it’s now combining with an atmospheric river. The combination is expected to cause heavy downpours and lead to life-threatening flooding throughout the rest of this week.

At least two people were killed, and more than 200,000 homes and businesses remain without power in Washington state after hurricane-force winds from the bomb cyclone roared through, triggering mudslides, blocking roads and damaging homes.

Now, the atmospheric river is expected to bring up to 16 inches of rain and snow to parts of northern California and Oregon. It will turn into wet snow at higher elevations in the Cascade Mountains creating blizzard conditions there.

Auriemma surpassed legendary Stanford coach Tara Vanderveer’s record. She had set the record last season before retiring. Vanderveer took over the title of wins leader from longtime Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski

The 70-year-old Auriemma is in his 40th season at UConn. He has led the Huskies to six undefeated seasons, 23 final fours and 11 national titles.

Adams, a former NYPD officer, is facing federal charges on bribery and campaign finance violations after the Justice Department indicted him in September.

The two previous NYPD commissioners, Edward Caban and Thomas Donlon, have been investigated as part of the probe into corruption in the Adams administration. Caban resigned from the role in September while Donlon will leave the role in the coming days.

Tisch is an heir to the Loews Corporation fortune and spent over a decade working for the NYPD, including as its deputy commissioner for information technology.

As sanitation commissioner, Tisch successfully led the mayor’s “Trash Revolution” initiative, getting more than 70% of the city’s trash placed into bins instead of in loose bags placed on city streets.

The New York City Police Benevolent Association, the largest union representing NYPD officers, signaled a willingness to work with Tisch when she assumes the role.

“We are critically understaffed, massively overworked and completely unsupported by a justice system and an oversight regime that care more about punishing cops than helping us get dangerous criminals off the streets. We hope to partner with Commissioner Tisch to make real progress on these issues as quickly as possible,” NYC PBA President Patrick Hendry said in a statement.

Tisch will officially assume the role of commissioner on Monday, Nov. 25.

How Trump 2.0 could change the landscape of Big Tech antitrust

With two months until President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, his policy plans are clear in many areas. But what do the next four years of antitrust regulation look like after the Biden administration’s aggressive enforcement?

Unlike trade, immigration and energy policy, it’s not expected that Trump’s goal is to undo the previous administration’s work. And a lot has happened over the past four years. But when it comes to Big Tech, experts point out that there’s no love lost between Trump and Silicon Valley.

“It’s a sector he doesn’t particularly like,” former Federal Trade Commission Chair William Kovacic told Straight Arrow News. “So my general intuition is that in that area, he says, ‘Carry on.'”

President Joe Biden’s headline maker was the appointment of FTC Chair Lina Khan. While she’s certainly a disruptor, her results have been mixed. Khan failed to block Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard and Facebook’s purchase of virtual reality company Within Unlimited. Meanwhile, the FTC is waiting for a ruling on Kroger’s nearly $25 billion merger with Albertsons, while it prepares to launch an investigation into Microsoft’s cloud business.

When it comes to Khan, her term as chair and commissioner expired in September 2024.

“My instinct would be that on the day of the inauguration, that evening or the next day, President Trump will sign a letter that designates one of the two Republicans on the commission to be the chair, probably as acting chair,” Kovacic said.

Even after the incoming president replaces Khan as chair, she could remain a commissioner until her replacement clears the confirmation process.

“The speed with which she departs the commission will depend on her own personal preferences,” Kovacic said. “Does she want to stay as part of a loyal opposition, maintaining a three-vote bloc that could operate to retard a rollback of her program?”

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice recently won a landmark case against Google when a judge ruled it monopolized the search space. The government is now asking the judge to force Google to sell off Chrome as the most severe remedy. The DOJ started the case under Trump’s first administration.

In the specific case of Google, Kovacic doesn’t believe the Trump administration will stand in the way of any action.

“I think at a minimum that means that DOJ will have a pretty broad remit to proceed with wrapping up the case as it sees fit, without the White House jumping in and saying, ‘Don’t do that,’” he said.

The DOJ also stopped JetBlue from buying Spirit Airlines. In the absence of a merger, Spirit Airlines has filed for bankruptcy protection.  But this is an area where the Trump administration could divert from Biden’s policy.

“I expect a more permissive approach towards mergers than the Biden enforcement agencies have taken,” Kovacic said.

The DOJ failed to stop UnitedHealthcare’s $13 billion acquisition of Change Healthcare during Biden’s term. And it is now investigating Hewlett Packard’s $14 billion acquisition of Juniper Networks. Executives at HP met with Justice Department officials last week to attempt to save the deal, according to Bloomberg.

The DOJ still has a full slate of cases against the likes of Apple, Ticketmaster-parent Live Nation, Visa and Google again, but this time for its lock in the digital ad space.

With a new administration set to take charge of antitrust, Kovacic said the antitrust legacy under Biden won’t disappear, especially when it comes to Khan, who has received support from incoming Vice President JD Vance.

“What she leaves behind, in part, is a renewed debate about what antitrust should be all about, and that’s going to be durable,” Kovacic said.

Simone Del Rosario:

We have a very clear idea of what President-elect Donald Trump plans to do with his next four years when it comes to things like trade, immigration and energy.

But one area where the future is more hazy is how he follows up on the Biden administration’s aggressive antitrust stance.

This isn’t an area where we’re likely to see Trump try to undo everything that’s been done during Biden’s term.

So let’s look at what’s happened in recent years.

Biden’s headline maker was the appointment of FTC Chair Lina Khan and while she’s certainly a disruptor, her results have been mixed. She failed to block Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard and Facebook’s purchase of virtual reality company Within Unlimited.

The FTC is waiting for a ruling on Kroger’s nearly $25 billion merger with Albertson’s, while also getting ready to launch an investigation into Microsoft’s cloud business.

Over at the Department of Justice, they won a landmark case against Google where a judge ruled it monopolized the search space. The government is now asking the judge to force Google to sell off Chrome to make it right.

It also stopped JetBlue from buying Spirit Airlines, and without the merger, Spirit Airlines has filed for bankruptcy protection.

It’s not all wins at Justice: the DOJ did fail to stop United Healthcare’s $13 billion acquisition of Change Healthcare.

And now their sights are on Hewlett Packard’s $14 billion acquisition of Juniper Networks. HP executives met with Justice Department officials last week to try to save the deal, Bloomberg reports.

With a big push of antitrust action before Inauguration Day, there’s still a full docket. The Justice Department filed cases against Apple, Ticketmaster-parent Live Nation, Visa, and Google again, but this time for its lock in the digital ad space.

So, what happens with antitrust when the new administration comes in? Especially when some of these cases can stretch the better part of a decade?

Let’s bring in antitrust expert and former FTC Chair and Commissioner Bill Kovacic.

Simone Del Rosario
Bill, we’re not walking into this with zero idea of how President Trump would deal with antitrust. Obviously, he’s held the office before. But what do you expect his position to be in the next four years?

Bill Kovacic
I expect in some areas that he’s not really going to tamper with the program that President Biden put in place, especially in the field of tech. He has a well-expressed antipathy towards a number of actors in the field. did initiate his justice department initiated the pending case against Google and the search market. His justice department began the investigation into Apple that generated a monopolization case.

His Federal Trade Commission appointees began the case against Facebook, focusing mainly on the acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp. So this is not a sector to whom he feels he owes anything. Again, it’s a sector he doesn’t particularly like. So my general intuition is that in that area, he says carry on. Now he has said some curious things lately about a possible remedy in Google. And today,

Today, literally today, the Department of Justice is going to file a document that lays out its intentions for remedies in the Google search case. But he said that he might not be fond of a breakup, that Google’s an important company, don’t want to injure them in some way. I don’t know if that was a well-considered view about remedies. But his nominee to head the Department of Justice, Matt Gaetz, has said, breakup sounds good to me when it comes to this company.

And the vice president-elect, Vance, has said, breaking them up sounds good to me, too. So it seems within the upper echelon of the Trump brain trust that there’s a lot of enthusiasm for going through with the structural remedy. I think at a minimum that means that DOJ will have a pretty broad remit to proceed with wrapping up the case as it sees fit, without the White House jumping in and saying, don’t do that. Go easy on them.

So I think with respect to the big tech cases, those carry on without interference. In other areas, he may back off some. I expect a more permissive approach towards mergers than the Biden enforcement agencies have taken. And that was one of the big irritants that even the Democratic donors expressed concern about is that the deal-making environment has been made so much more difficult.

And what they were really pressing Harris for is a relaxation. I think if Vice President Harris had won the election, I think she would have accommodated them in some ways, in subtle ways, but gradually, she would have backed off of the very tough approach now that the two agencies are taking. I think that is the way she would have given assurance to her major business donors. But without question, think Trump will ease off of the merger enforcement mandate.

Simone Del Rosario
Okay, before we move on to the FTC, then let’s stick in the DOJ umbrella for a little bit. What do you make of what’s going on with Hewlett Packard? Do you think that they’re going to pursue action there with that acquisition, given so little time left in the Biden administration? And you saying you think that the next administration will be more favorable to acquisitions?

Bill Kovacic
Well, the current Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust, Jonathan Cantor, probably if he follows past custom, will submit his resignation early in January. So by the time the full investigation in that transaction is completed, and by the way, the timeline for that would carry well into 2025 before a decision to prosecute is made, he and perhaps some of his colleagues in the front office at the Antitrust Division will be gone. And the individual who will be heading

Antitrust Division. By tradition, is the senior career civil servant. That would be the current head of the criminal unit at the Antitrust Division. So will be a career civil servant who will probably be making the decision to prosecute there. Here again, it’s so much depends on what they find during the course of the inquiry. But with Jonathan Kander’s departure, lots of the people are still staying behind are probably imbued.

with the approach toward the enforcement that he’s brought to the agency, a real skepticism of settlements, concern that merger policy for tech generally had been far too permissive. I don’t see that disappearing here, but there is the opportunity for the department to be somewhat more cautious than he was in deciding what to do. When you’re the interim appointee, you’re in an awkward position. You don’t have the permanent mandate. You’re not really part of the new administration, the new team.

What you’d really like is for them to get on with appointing that person, getting them confirmed in the Senate. So anything that involves a major policy decision, you can turn to them and say, the file’s on your desk, it’s all yours.

Simone Del Rosario
Yeah. Let’s talk about the Lena Con of it all over at the FTC. Is Kahn gone?

Bill Kovacic
My instinct would be that on the day of the inauguration that evening or the next day, President Trump will sign a letter that designates one of the two Republicans on the commission to be the chair, probably as acting chair. That’s the routine when you have a regime change of the kind we’ve had. Chair Kahn’s tenure, her term expired in September, but she is allowed by law to remain on the commission.

until her successor is confirmed and comes to take office. the speed with which she departs the commission will depend on her own personal preferences. Does she want to stay as part of a loyal opposition, maintaining a three vote block that could operate to retard a rollback of her program? On a personal level, it’s not enjoyable to go through that kind of demotion.

From my own experience, it’s nice to get the letter that says that you are elevated to be the chair. It is no fun at all to be displaced. And sometimes your feeling is, I’m going to go, I’ve had enough. I stayed, but not everyone sees it that way. So in that respect, it depends on her preferences, but she could stay as a commissioner into 2025 until the White House nominates a successor.to be a commissioner and gets that person confirmed.

Simone Del Rosario
What’s confusing about her is, as you’ve alluded to, some of the support within Trump’s own team for Lena Con and what she has done at the FTC. She’s been there to make waves. She’s gone after Big Tech. JD Vance has said multiple times how much he likes her. So if she leaves, what about what she represents?

Bill Kovacic
What she leaves behind in part is a renewed debate about what antitrust should be all about. And that’s going to be durable. She brought forward the question of which interests should be protected in the enforcement of the antitrust laws. What’s the correct role of antitrust law in safeguarding the interests of small and medium enterprises? Shouldn’t antitrust be attuned to the effect of transactions or behavior in markets for labor? Shouldn’t antitrust have a greater concern about

social and political values that go beyond traditional efficiency concerns regarding price, quantity and innovation. That change in the debate, I think, is going to endure. And it’s reflected in part by exactly the voices that we hear from the Republican Party that have said competition policy is more than simply a better price, better quality, more innovation. That more egalitarian view

that a number of conservative Republicans hold is a reflection of a broader discussion in our society today about what competition law should do. So I think at a high level, the change in the debate, the change in the intellectual vision that she brought to the job is going to have a long life and that’s going to persist. How it manifests itself in individual cases is hard to tell, but she has carried out the very important task

of changing the way that elected officials and others think about what the FTC should do.

Simone Del Rosario
Former FTC chair and commissioner Bill Kovacic, there’s no one better than you to have on to talk about this. We really appreciate your time today.

Bill Kovacic
I’m most grateful, Simone. Thank you.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is enforcing a new policy requiring public bathroom use on the House side of the Capitol to line up with biological sex and not gender identity. “I want to make sure that no men are in women’s private spaces and it doesn’t end here… this shouldn’t be going on, on any federal property,” Mace said. “If you’re a school or an institution that gets government funding this kind of thing should be banned. I think it’s sick, it’s twisted.”

Mace said the bill is intended to “absolutely” target McBride.

Speaker Johnson said Wednesday, Nov. 20, he supports Mace’s resolution

“A man is a man and a woman is a woman, and a man cannot become a woman,” Johnson said.

Johnson also noted every House member’s office has its own private bathroom and that unisex restrooms are available throughout the Capitol.

Under House rules, the speaker has general control of facilities in the chamber, giving Johnson the authority to issue the policy surrounding bathrooms.

Rep. McBride responded in a statement that said in part, “I’m not here to fight about bathrooms. I’m here to fight for Delawareans and to bring down costs facing families. Like all members, I will follow the rules outlined by Speaker Johnson even if I disagree with them.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., accused Republicans of bullying McBride.

“This is what we’re doing? This is the lesson that you’ve drawn from the election in November?” Jeffries said. “This is your priority, that you want to bully a member of Congress, as opposed to welcoming her to join this body so all of us can work together.”

It’s not clear now exactly how the policy will be enforced.

Ed. Secretary nominee Linda McMahon facing prior abuse coverup allegations

Listen

Linda McMahon, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for secretary of education, is under scrutiny for her handling of alleged child sex abuse when she was CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). A decades-old allegation against a WWE employee has recently been revisited in a lawsuit by plaintiffs who claim they were abused while working for the company.

McMahon has become a close political ally to Trump since leaving WWE 15 years ago. She served as the head of the White House Small Business Administration in Trump’s first term and is currently a co-chair of Trump’s 2024 transition team.

As secretary of education, McMahon would have power over how the federal government enforces rules surrounding sexual harassment and abuse in schools.

In October, five plaintiffs named Linda McMahon and Vince McMahon, her husband and longtime business partner, in a lawsuit. It alleged the McMahons covered up for an employee sexually abusing other, young employees.

In the 1980s, the company hired “ring boys,” teenagers who would build and take down the set for WWE’s traveling performances.

They allege a ring announcer named Mel Phillips would find children like them, hire them and then sexually abuse them at work and during work travel.

According to the complaint, both Vince and Linda McMahon knew Phillips was abusing children. The plaintiffs allege the McMahons fired Phillips when the abuse allegations became public knowledge in 1988.

However, they say the McMahons hired Phillips back six weeks later. Phillips later died in 2012.

Reporting at the time lines up with their complaint. In 1992, New York Post columnist Phil Mushnick wrote an article about Vince McMahon, including a phone interview with the WWE chairman.

Mushnick wrote that “McMahon said he rehired Phillips with the caveat that he steer clear from kids.”

In an article from The Washington Post published Tuesday, Nov. 19, Linda McMahon’s attorney Laura Brevetti said the lawsuit was, “baseless” and noted that Linda and Vince McMahon are currently separated.

While Trump has said he wants to abolish the Department of Education, McMahon would still run the agency if the Senate votes to confirm her.

The department would stay in operation unless Congress approves its formal shutdown.

Jack Aylmer: PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP’S PICK OF LINDA MCMAHON FOR SECRETARY OF EDUCATION IS RAISING SCRUTINY OF MCMAHON’S HANDLING OF ALLEGATIONS OF CHILD SEX ABUSE WHEN SHE WORKED AS CEO OF WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT.

MCMAHON LEFT WWE 15 YEARS AGO AND HAS SINCE SERVED AS HEAD OF THE WHITE HOUSE SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION AND TRUMP’S 2024 TRANSITION TEAM, BECOMING A CLOSE ALLY OF THE PRESIDENT-ELECT.

Linda McMahon // President Trump’s pick for Secretary of Education: “I’m perhaps one of the few people who’s been privileged to call Donald Trump a colleague and a boss, but he’s also a friend.”

Jack Aylmer: BUT VICTIMS ALLEGING ABUSE AT THE HANDS OF A WWE EMPLOYEE DECADES AGO FILED A LAWSUIT LAST MONTH AGAINST MCMAHON AND HER HUSBAND AND LONG-TIME BUSINESS PARTNER, VINCE MCMAHON.

THEY ALLEGE SHE KNEW ABOUT AND COVERED FOR AN EMPLOYEE SEXUALLY ABUSING KIDS AS AN EMPLOYEE OF HERS.

THAT SUIT MAY BE RELEVANT AS SHE SEEKS SENATE CONFIRMATION FOR A JOB OVERSEEING THE SCHOOLS CHILDREN GO TO EVERY DAY.

FIVE PLAINTIFFS FILED A CIVIL SUIT SAYING THEY WORKED IN THE 1980’S AS “RING BOYS” FOR WWE, ASSISTANTS WHO WOULD BUILD AND BREAK DOWN THE SET FOR WWE’S TRAVELING PERFORMANCES.

THEY ALLEGE THAT A RING ANNOUNCER NAMED MEL PHILLIPS WOULD FIND CHILDREN LIKE THEM, HIRE THEM AS RING BOYS, AND THEN SEXUALLY ABUSE THEM AT WORK AND DURING WORK TRAVEL.

ACCORDING TO THE COMPLAINT, BOTH VINCE AND LINDA MCMAHON KNEW PHILLIPS WAS ABUSING CHILDREN. THE PLAINTIFFS ALLEGE THE MCMAHONS FIRED PHILLIPS WHEN THE ABUSE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST HIM CAME PUBLIC IN 1988. BUT THAT THE MCMAHONS REHIRED PHILLIPS A FEW WEEKS LATER. PHILLIPS DIED IN 2012.

REPORTING AT THE TIME LINES UP WITH THE ALLEGATIONS IN THE COMPLAINT.

IN 1992, NEW YORK POST COLUMNIST PHIL MUSHNICK PUBLISHED A COLUMN INCLUDING A PHONE INTERVIEW HE DID WITH VINCE MCMAHON.

MUSHNICK WROTE THAT “MCMAHON SAID HE REHIRED PHILLIPS WITH THE CAVEAT THAT PHILLIPS STEER CLEAR FROM KIDS.”

IN AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED TUESDAY, LINDA MCMAHON’S ATTORNEY TOLD THE WASHINGTON POST THAT THE LAWSUIT WAS, QUOTE, “BASELESS” AND NOTED THAT LINDA AND VINCE MCMAHON ARE CURRENTLY SEPARATED.

AS SECRETARY OF EDUCATION, MCMAHON WOULD HAVE POWER OVER HOW THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ENFORCES RULES GOVERNING SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND ABUSE IN SCHOOLS.

AND WHILE PRESIDENT-ELECT TRUMP SAYS HE INTENDS TO ABOLISH THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, MCMAHON WOULD STILL RUN THE AGENCY.

THE DEPARTMENT WOULD STAY IN OPERATION UNLESS CONGRESS APPROVES A FORMAL SHUTDOWN, WHICH MAY PROVE DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE.

How media highlighted or omitted illegal status of Laken Riley murderer

Listen

A judge ruled Wednesday, Nov. 20, that Jose Ibarra is guilty of murdering Georgia college student Laken Riley. The case gained national attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and Ibarra’s status as an undocumented migrant from Venezuela. Ibarra was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Key moments from the trial included DNA evidence, including traces found under Riley’s fingernails and a jacket with her hair linked to Ibarra. Prosecutors argued that Ibarra attacked Riley while she was jogging on the University of Georgia campus in February, dragging her into the woods, beating her with a rock and leaving her partially naked and covered in leaves.

Ibarra’s defense claimed the evidence was circumstantial and suggested his brothers were responsible for the crime. During the trial, a recorded prison phone call was played where Ibarra’s wife questioned why a person would not call 911 if they saw someone dying.

Despite the defense’s claims, the judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to convict Ibarra. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Ibarra crossed into the United States through El Paso, Texas, in September 2022. His illegal status became a focal point in media coverage, adding to the national debate over immigration laws, especially during an election year.

Some media outlets chose to emphasize Ibarra’s legal status in their headlines, while others did not.

News outlets with a left-leaning bias, such as NBC and CBS, omitted this detail in the headline, while others like ABC and CNN referred to him by his name or as “suspect.”

Right-leaning outlets, including the New York Post and Fox News, led with Ibarra’s status as an undocumented immigrant. The Wall Street Journal, rated by media watchdog group AllSides as having no political bias, included his migrant status in its top line.

Across all outlets, regardless of political bias, Ibarra was described as an undocumented immigrant or as having entered the country illegally. The importance of highlighting this detail varied, with NBC mentioning it in the ninth paragraph and Fox News in the first sentence.

The Harris campaign is still fundraising. Where does the money go?

Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign continues to actively fundraise. The solicitations come as reports reveal the Harris campaign is $20 million in debt after spending about $1.5 billion

In emails to supporters, the Harris campaign asked for anywhere from $50 to $500 so it can, “defend those that are within the margin of recounts or certain legal challenges.”

The emails asked supporters to “rush” donations to the Harris Fight Fund Program. However, the money is first allocated to the Democratic National Committee, according to the fine print.

Officials will break donations down in three ways. The first $41,300 of a person’s donation will go to the DNC. The next $3,000 will go toward the Harris for President Recount Account. Officials would split the last $510,000 between Democratic state parties around the country.

A Harris campaign fundraising email explains how donations are divided.

If donors want their money to go directly to the recount account, rather than the DNC, they have to inform the campaign via email.

On Monday, Nov. 18, the DNC Staff Union announced staffers were being laid off with one day’s notice and no severance. The Harris-Walz campaign gave staff three weeks of severance.

The union criticized senior leadership and blamed it on “callous and short-sighted mismanagement.” The cuts go far beyond typical campaign turnover, according to the union. Many of who were laid off included employees were told their positions would remain after the election.

Those impacted by the DNC layoffs include employees who had worked there for decades and expecting parents.
