Bondi specifically cited New York’s “Green Light Law,” which allows migrants living in the country illegally to get a driver’s license. The law prohibits the Department of Motor Vehicles from sharing information about the applicants with federal authorities.
“Law enforcement officers cannot check their identity if they pull them over. Law enforcement officers do not have access to their background,” Bondi said. “And if these great men and women pull over someone and don’t have access to their background, they have no idea who they’re dealing with, and it puts their lives on the line.”
During her announcement, Bondi shared the story of 20-year-old Kayla Hamilton, who was raped and murdered by an MS-13 gang member from El Salvador. The perpetrator was smuggled into the United States, apprehended by Border Patrol agents in Texas and flown to Maryland to live with a sponsor.
“Her murderer was only living there for five days before he viciously strangled her, raped her and left her on the floor like trash and robbed her of $6,” Hamilton’s mother, Tammy Nobles, said.
Bondi previously announced the DOJ is suing the state of Illinois, Cook County and the city of Chicago for sanctuary laws that restrict or prohibit local law enforcement cooperation with immigration enforcement officers.

The lawsuit alleges that Illinois law deliberately impedes federal immigration officers from carrying out their duties. Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker’s office said his state’s laws and policies comply with federal law.
“We did it to Illinois, strike one. Strike two is New York. And if you are a state not complying with federal law, you’re next, get ready,” Bondi said.
None of New York’s leaders named in the suit have commented as of this publication.
