GREENWOOD, Neb. — The threat of severe weather forced former President Donald Trump to postpone a “Save America” rally scheduled for Friday night in Nebraska. Trump emailed a statement calling off the event with plans to appear at a rally on Sunday.
“The most important thing is to keep you safe, and that cannot be done with such a terrible forecast,” Trump’s release stated, thanking those who had already lined up for the event.
“Because of severe weather, including the possibility of 60 mph+ wind, hailstorms, and maybe even tornadoes, I will not be coming to Nebraska tonight, but rather, weather permitting, will be there this Sunday night, May 1st,” the former president said.
Trump’s appearance with Republican gubernatorial hopeful Charles Herbster underscores his play to be a kingmaker in GOP primaries.
There has been little polling in the nine-person primary race to succeed two-term Gov. Pete Ricketts (R), who can’t seek reelection because of term limits. Herbster was seen as a strong front runner through much of the race but is now fighting accusations that he groped at least eight young women at public events.
Herbster, who has denied the allegations, is one of several Trump-endorsed candidates in close primaries on ballots next month.
