Gretzky’s been in the spotlight lately because Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin could break Gretzky’s all-time goal-scoring mark. When the National Hockey League returns to play after its Christmas break on Saturday, Dec. 28, Ovechkin could similarly make his return from a month-long injury. He is just 27 goals away from breaking Gretzky’s mark of 894.

But on Wednesday, Dec. 25, Trump put Gretzky at the center of a different chase. In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said he had just met with Gretzky and suggested, “Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada –– You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.”
Trump said, “He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a draft Wayne Gretzky Movement. It would be so much fun to watch!”
I just left Wayne Gretzky, “The Great One” as he is known in Ice Hockey circles. I said, “Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada – You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.” He had no interest, but I think…

Trump has been trolling America’s northern neighbor since he was re-elected, often about making Canada the “51st state.”
There also seems to be one big advocate of Trump’s idea: Gretzky’s wife Janet, who responded on Instagram Friday, Dec. 27, with one of her husband’s favorite quotes: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
As for “The Great One” himself, he continues his work as a hockey television analyst and ambassador for the game.
He’s also reportedly rooting for Ovechkin to break his record. When asked about it two weeks ago, Gretzky said, “Listen, he’s human. He’ll get a little bit nervous near the end, but listen, he’s been nothing but positive for our sport. That’s the most important. Good for him, man.”
There’s no doubt Gretzky is comfortable talking hockey and celebrating Ovechkin’s record chase, but he has yet to make any public comment about Trump’s or his wife’s suggestions.
THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE HAS BEEN ON CHRISTMAS BREAK FOR A FEW DAYS, THEY DON’T RETURN TO PLAY UNTIL SATURDAY BUT THERE IS SOME NEWS INVOLVING WAYNE GRETZKY, JUST NOT THE SORT YOU’D NORMALLY THINK.
YES “THE GREAT ONE” IS IN THE SPOTLIGHT RECENTLY BECAUSE HIS ALL-TIME GOAL SCORING MARK COULD BE BROKEN BY WASHINGTON CAPITALS STAR ALEX OVECHKIN. IN FACT, ON SATURDAY OVECHKIN COULD MAKE HIS RETURN TO THE ICE AFTER A MONTH LONG INJURY. HE IS JUST 27 GOALS AWAY FROM BREAKING GRETZKY’S MARK OF 894.
BUT THURSDAY, PRESIDENT ELECT DONALD TRUMP PUT GREZKY AT THE CENTER OF A DIFFERENT CHASE.
IN A POST ON HIS TRUTH SOCIAL ACCOUNT TRUMP RELAYED THAT HE HAD JUST MET WITH GRETZKY AND SUGGESTED, “Wayne, why don’t you run for Prime Minister of Canada, soon to be known as the Governor of Canada – You would win easily, you wouldn’t even have to campaign.” He had no interest, but I think the people of Canada should start a DRAFT WAYNE GRETZKY Movement. It would be so much fun to watch!
TRUMP HAS BEEN TROLLING OUR NORTHERN NEIGHBORS SINCE HE WAS RE-ELECTED, OFTEN IN REFERENCE TO MAKING CANADA THE QUOTE “51ST STATE”.
AND THERE’S SEEMS TO BE ONE BIG ADVOCATE OF TRUMPS IDEA IN THE GRETZKY CAMP, NONE OTHER THAN HIS WIFE JANET WHO RESPONDED FRIDAY ON INSTAGRAM WITH ONE OF HER HUSBANDS FAVORITE QUOTES. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”
AS FOR “THE GREAT ONE” HIMSELF HE CONTINUES HIS WORK AS A HOCKEY ANALYST AND IS ROOTING FOR OVECHKIN TO BREAK HIS RECORD, HE’S ASKED ABOUT IT OFTEN, AND SAID THIS TWO WEEKS AGO.
“listen he’s human, he’ll get a little bit nervous near the end but .. listen he’s been nothing but positive for our sport. That’s the most important, good for him, man”
GRETZKY CERTAINLY COMFORTABLE TALKING HOCKEY AND OVECHKIN’S CHASE, WE’LL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE IF HE HAS ANY KIND OF PUBLIC RESPONSE TO TRUMP’S SUGGESTION.
