Why does the U.S. want Ukraine’s rare earths?
This latest development follows previous remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested trading military aid for Ukraine’s rare earth resources. The electronics, defense and energy industries view these minerals as critical.
Trump said that he aimed to acquire the equivalent of $500 billion worth of rare earths from Ukraine and indicated that officials in Kyiv had “essentially agreed” to such an arrangement. The president has expressed a desire for compensation in exchange for the more than $300 billion in U.S. aid already provided to Ukraine.
What happens next?
While the full terms of the proposed deal have not been publicly disclosed, Trump confirmed that he has personally spoken with Zelenskyy and expressed optimism about the upcoming discussions.
THE U.S. HAS PUT A DEAL ON THE TABLE FOR UKRAINE-
ONE THAT WOULD TRADE CONTINUED AMERICAN MILITARY AID IN THE ONGOING WAR AGAINST RUSSIA-
FOR RARE EARTH MINERALS.
U.S. TREASURY SECRETARY SCOTT BESSENT PRESENTED THE OFFER TO UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT VOLODYMYR ZELENSKYY DURING A MEETING BETWEEN THE TWO THIS WEEK IN KYIV.
ZELENSKYY CALLED THE TALKS “PRODUCTIVE” AND CONFIRMED THE UKRANIAN GOVERNMENT HAD RECEIVED A DRAFT OF THE PROPOSAL-
WHICH IS NOW BEING REVIEWED.
A RESPONSE FROM UKRAINE IS REPORTEDLY EXPECTED TO COME FRIDAY-
WHEN ZELENSKYY WILL MEET WITH VICE PRESIDENT JD VANCE AT THE MUNICH SECURITY CONFERENCE.
STRAIGHT ARROW NEWS REPORTED LAST WEEK ON PRESIDENT DONAL TRUMP’S INITIAL OFFER OF TRADING MILITARY AID FOR UKRAINE’S RARE EARTHS.
THESE VALUABLE MINERALS HAVE A NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS ACROSS VARIOUS INDUSTRIES-
INCLUDING ELECTRONICS, DEFENSE AND RENEWABLE ENERGY.
TRUMP PREVIOUSLY SAID HE WANTED TO ACQUIRE THE EQUIVALENT OF 500 BILLION DOLLARS IN RARE EARTHS FROM UKRAINE-
AND THAT OFFICIALS FROM KYIV HAVE ESSENTIALLY AGREED TO DO SO.
THIS CAME AFTER THE PRESIDENT INDICATED A DESIRE TO RECEIVE SOME FORM OF COMPENSATION FOR THE MORE THAN 300 BILLION DOLLARS IN U.S. AID THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN PROVIDED TO UKRAINE.
WHILE EXACT TERMS OF THE OFFICIAL DEAL JUST PROPOSED BY THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION HAVE NOT BEEN DISCLOSED-
THE PRESIDENT CONFIRMED THAT HE HAS PERSONALLY SPOKEN WITH ZELENSKYY-
AND HOPES FOR A POSITIVE OUTCOME FROM THE UPCOMING DISCUSSIONS.
