The Trump administration asked Cheung to officially launch a criminal probe into the matter. Instead of investigating, Cheung handed in her resignation Tuesday.
In her resignation letter, Cheung said interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin demanded she resign if she didn’t order the bank to freeze the funds.
Cheung cited a lack of evidence, “including sufficient evidence to tell the bank that there is probable cause to seize the particular accounts identified,” The New York Post reports.
Four Democratic senators, including Edward Markey of Massachusetts, Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and Vermont’s Bernie Sanders, are asking the Justice Department’s inspector general to investigate Cheung’s resignation. They write, “The Department must not become an instrument of political retribution or partisan maneuvering,” Reuters reports.
When Zeldin was asked about Cheung’s resignation, he referred questions to the DOJ.
