WEST VIRGINIA IS BANNING FOOD DYES AND CHEMICALS USED TO PRESERVE A NUMBER OF POPULAR AMERICAN SNACKS.
WEST VIRGINIA GOVERNOR PATRICK MORRISEY SIGNING THE BILL BANNING CERTAIN FOOD PRESERVATIVES AND COLORINGS INTO LAW THIS WEEK.
IN A STATEMENT, MORRISEY SAID:
“WEST VIRGINIA RANKS AT THE BOTTOM OF MANY PUBLIC HEALTH METRICS, WHICH IS WHY THERE’S NO BETTER PLACE TO LEAD THE MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AGAIN MISSION.”
THE DYES OUTLAWED UNDER THE LEGISLATION INCLUDE A COUPLE OF BLUE FOOD COLORINGS, ONE GREEN FOOD DYE AS WELL AS RED AND YELLOW DYES.
THE TWO CHEMICALS PROHIBITED ARE FOOD PRESERVATIVES.

THE CHEMICAL BAN DOESN’T GO INTO EFFECT UNTIL 2028 TO GIVE FOOD COMPANIES TIME TO MAKE CHANGES, WHILE THE DYE BAN FOR SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAMS GOES INTO EFFECT ON AUGUST 1ST.
SOME NOTABLE SNACKS AFFECTED BY THE CHANGE ARE M-AND-M’S, DORITOS AND SOFT DRINKS LIKE MOUNTAIN DEW.
MORRISEY SAYS THE LAW WILL HELP PEOPLE “EAT HEALTHIER AND ADDRESS SOME OF THE VEXING HEALTHCARE PROBLEMS FACING OUR CITIZENS.”
WEST VIRGINIA’S ACTION COMES AS THE F-D-A ANNOUNCED IN JANUARY IT’S MOVING TO ELIMINATE THE USE OF RED DYE NUMBER THREE IN FOODS AND MEDICINES.
