White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki is leaving the Biden Administration for MSNBC. Psaki hasn’t signed a contract yet, but according to multiple reports, she’s in advanced talks to host a show on the streaming service Peacock, and provide analysis for MSNBC.
Since the news broke, The White House Press corps has repeatedly questioned Psaki about the ethics of negotiating with a media outlet while she’s still Press secretary.
Ed O’Keefe says: “Is it ethical for you to continue conducting this job while negotiating with a media outlet?”
Some of the toughest questions have come from NBC’s Kristen Welker.
Kristen Welker says: “how can you continue to be an effective briefer if you do in fact have plans to join a media outlet?”
Psaki says: “I have done… have taken the ethics legal requirements to the highest very seriously in any discussions and any considerations about any future employment,”
CNN reports NBC News staffers have expressed dismay to network executives. NBC News President Noah Oppenheim held an emergency phone call with DC staffers who are concerned hiring Psaki could tarnish the NBC News brand. Oppeheim responded by saying Psaki will only appear on MSNBC opinion programming, not NBC News.
It’s not uncommon for former administration officials to join cable outlets. Dana Perino is one of Fox New Channel’s most popular hosts. But she joined the network after Geroge Bush left office. The Psaki controversy stems from her simultaneously working and negotiating.
It’s not clear when she’ll leave, but she’s expected to stay until at least April 30th for the White House Correspondents Association dinner.
