Understanding the explosive popularity of ‘Wordle’

A new online game has quickly become a social media darling. “Wordle” lets players guess a predetermined five-letter word in just six tries. Released to the public in October, Wordle’s user base has grown to more than 300,000.

The explosion in popularity is attributed to Twitter, where the conversation around the game continues with a new puzzle released daily. Wordle is free and does not display any ads to users, which is one reason some believe it has resonated with audiences.

IT’S THE GRID OF GREEN, YELLOW, AND GRAY THAT THE INTERNET CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF.

IT’S CALLED WORDLE  – THE ONLINE WORD GAME HAS ONLY BEEN AROUND FOR A FEW MONTHS BUT HAS ALREADY EXPLODED IN POPULARITY.

THE MISSION: TO GUESS A FIVE-LETTER WORD IN SIX TRIES OR LESS

AFTER EACH GUESS THE TILES CHANGE COLORS

A GREEN TILE MEANS THE LETTER IS IN THE CORRECT SPOT.

A YELLOW TILE MEANS THE LETTER IS IN THE WORD BUT IN THE WRONG SPOT.

A GRAY TILE MEANS THE LETTER ISN’T IN THE WORD AT ALL.

YOU CAN ONLY PLAY ONCE A DAY AND THE WORD YOU’RE LOOKING FOR – IS THE SAME WORD EVERYDAY FOR EVERYBODY

THE GAME HAS UNITED THE INTERNET WITH USERS SHARING THEIR SCORES ON TWITTER, EVEN TURNING THEM INTO MEMES, WITHOUT REVEALING THE ACTUAL WORD
