X claims ownership of InfoWars’ account, blocks transfer to The Onion

ELON MUSK’S SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM, X, IS ATTEMPTING TO BLOCK PART OF THE BANKRUPTCY SALE OF ALEX JONES’S ‘INFOWARS.’ THE SALE DREW NATIONAL ATTENTION, AS SATIRICAL NEWS OUTLET ‘THE ONION’ WAS POSITIONED TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THE SITE. BUT NOW, THE DEAL IS ON HOLD.  

‘THE ONION’ PLACED THE WINNING BID FOR $1-POINT-75 MILLION, BACKED BY SUPPORT FROM SANDY HOOK VICTIMS’ FAMILIES. X FILED A LEGAL OBJECTION… CLAIMING INFOWARS’ ACCOUNTS ON ITS PLATFORM CAN’T BE TRANSFERRED WITHOUT THE COMPANY’S PERMISSION.  

X ARGUES ITS TERMS OF SERVICE CLEARLY STATE THAT USERS DON’T OWN THEIR ACCOUNTS… THEY’RE SIMPLY LICENSED TO USE THEM. THIS MEANS INFOWARS’ ACCOUNTS CANNOT BE SOLD AS PART OF THE DEAL. THE COMPANY SAYS IT’S NOT OPPOSED TO THE SALE OF OTHER INFOWARS ASSETS, BUT THE ACCOUNTS THEMSELVES BELONG TO X.   

JONES AND ANOTHER BIDDER ARE ACCUSING THE BANKRUPTCY TRUSTEE OF COLLUDING WITH ‘THE ONION’ AND SANDY HOOK FAMILIES TO MANIPULATE THE AUCTION. BUT THE TRUSTEE HAS DISMISSED THOSE CLAIMS AS CONSPIRACY THEORIES DESIGNED TO DISRUPT THE SALE. A FEDERAL JUDGE WILL NOW REVIEW THE OBJECTIONS AT A HEARING NEXT MONTH.  

MEANWHILE, ELON MUSK’S ACTIONS WITH X CONTINUE TO RAISE EYEBROWS. RECENTLY, HE REASSIGNED THE DORMANT ‘AT-AMERICA’ HANDLE TO PROMOTE HIS PRO-TRUMP SUPER PAC. 

MUSK AND JONES HAVE SHOWN TO HAVE A COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIP… WITH MUSK STATING JONES’ ACCOUNT WOULD NEVER BE REINSTATED AFTER A PERMANENT BAN IN 2019 OVER ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR. MUSK LATER REINSTATED JONES’ ACCOUNT FOUR YEARS LATER… AND TALKED ABOUT THE CONTROVERSY WITH JONES DURING AN X SPACE.
