Chinese nationals may be barred from student visas under new proposal

Two bills were recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, targeting Chinese nationals who want to study in America, as well as those who want to purchase farmland in the country. According to a bill put forth by Riley Moore, R-W.V., Chinese nationals would be barred from receiving any one of three types of student visas necessary to study in the U.S.

Previous bills have tried to prevent Chinese graduate students from pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. According to Moore, by allowing Chinese students into the U.S., “We’ve literally invited the [Chinese Communist Party] to spy on our military, steal our intellectual property, and threaten national security.”

Nearly 300,000 Chinese students attended schools in the U.S. during the 2023-24 academic school year, according to the Institute of International Education.
