GOP lawmaker who voted to convict backs Trump

Former Senator Richard Burr, who voted to convict Trump in 2021, announced he will support Trump in the upcoming election. Burr’s impeachment vote was based on Trump’s negligent actions during the January 6 insurrection, not an attempt to disqualify him from serving.
Burr claimed, “That’s not a disqualifier as to whether you can serve,” emphasizing his impeachment vote reflected a serious concern about Trump’s choices. Burr says his decision was a response to the actions Trump took on Jan. 6, 2021.
