Microsoft lays off internal DEI team, says diversity is “no longer business critical”

According to an internal email at Microsoft, the company criticized diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. The email said the programs are no longer considered business critical, impactful work.

The email revealed that the DEI team at Microsoft was officially dissolved on July 1. Microsoft cited the as “changing business needs” as business requirements begin to change.

This has sparked criticism both within the company and from external parties. While the team has been disbanded, Microsoft said its commitment to promoting equity and inclusion remains the same.
