USDA working to rescind terminations for fired officials working on bird flu efforts

President Donald Trump’s administration accidentally fired several USDA staff members who were working on the bird flu outbreak. Now, the department is working to rescind those terminations.

Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., expressed horror at the firings and called the incident incredibly irresponsible.

The firings have caused public concern, as bird flu outbreaks have harmed poultry populations and led to soaring egg prices across the U.S. In the past month, scientists noted the virus has infected more than 23 million birds. Researchers have also noted at least 68 human cases and one death in the U.S.

The USDA attempts to reverse the firings, noting that positions related to the avian flu response are essential for public safety.
