Surging migrant crisis is overwhelming US cities from Eagle Pass, TX, to NYC

Friday

Share

There’s another migrant surge at the U.S. southern border. Thousands of migrants, mostly from Venezuela, crossed the Rio Grande during the week of Sept. 17, trekking into Eagle Pass, Texas.

Border officials report at least two people drowned in the river including a 3-year-old child.

Earlier this week, during an interview with CNN, Eagle Pass’ Democratic mayor, Rolando Salinas, criticized the Biden administration for the influx of migrants, and has since declared a state of emergency, seeking federal aid and assistance.

“I’ll be honest with you, I believe 100% he does bear some responsibility for this crisis,” Salinas said about President Biden. “I haven’t heard from anybody in the administration. The president hasn’t put out a statement, the vice president. I haven’t heard from anybody. Nobody has bothered to call me or anyone on the city staff saying, ‘Hey this is the federal government. We know what you’re going through, we’re worried about you, this is our plan of action.’ Nothing. We’re here abandoned. We’re on the border asking for help. This is unacceptable.”

According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, these daily large migrant crossing numbers haven’t been this high since just before Title 42 expired in May 2023. The coronavirus pandemic-era policy allowed U.S. officials to turn away migrants at the border citing health concerns.

On May 8, 2023, border officials reported more than 10,000 migrant crossings in a single day. And now, 4.5 months later, officials are seeing similar numbers.

As CNN reports, there were more than 8,000 apprehensions on Monday, Sept. 18 alone, and more than 8,600 crossings in a 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle are responding.

For more than a year, Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has been bussing thousands of migrants to sanctuary cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and New York City.

NYC’s Democratic Mayor Eric Adams, and previous administrations, had declared the city a sanctuary city. This year, more than 100,000 migrants have shown up in NYC. Just last week, Adams said the migrant crisis would “destroy” New York City.

In response, the Biden administration announced it’s extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans who have been in the United States since before July 31, 2023 – so they can live and work in the country legally.

DHS estimates this will help 470,000 migrants across the country.

Adams is now planning to start evicting tens of thousands of migrants to discourage new arrivals. But for now, that’s not stopping migrants from coming across the U.S. southern border.

Abbott said the Texas National Guard installed miles of razor wire to help deter illegal immigrants from pouring into Texas. That plan backfired. Abbott appeared on Fox News to talk about the situation.

“And we have repelled tens of thousands of migrants who’ve tried to get into Texas illegally,” Abbot said. “And then yesterday, Joe Biden had his Border Patrol officers cut through that razor wire, and then they pulled the razor wire, and then suddenly let in hundreds, if not thousands of people, illegally into Texas, into the United States.”

Gov. Abbott says he then ordered the Texas National Guard to double the razor wire along the border to help keep denying access to migrants.

The Biden administration announced it will also deploy 800 troops to assist U.S. Customs and Border Protection in processing migrants that have crossed the southern border.

IT’S ANOTHER MIGRANT SURGE AT THE U-S SOUTHERN BORDER.

THOUSANDS OF MIGRANTS – MOSTLY FROM VENEZUELA – CROSSED THE RIO GRANDE RIVER THIS WEEK – TREKKING INTO EAGLE PASS, TEXAS. BORDER OFFICIALS REPORT THAT AT LEAST TWO PEOPLE DROWNED IN THE RIVER – INCLUDING A THREE-YEAR-OLD CHILD.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, DURING AN INTERVIEW WITH CNN.

EAGLE PASS’ DEMOCRATIC MAYOR — ROLANDO SALINAS – SLAMMED THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION FOR the influx of migrants… AND HAS SINCE DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY – seeking federal aid and assistance.

“I’ll be honest with you… I believe 100% he does bear some responsibility for this crisis. I haven’t heard from anybody in the administration. the president hasn’t put out a statement. the vice president. I haven’t heard from anybody. nobody has bothered to call me or anyone on the city staff saying ‘hey this is the federal government, we know what you’re going through, we’re worried about you, this is our plan of action.’ nothing. we’re here abandoned. we’re on the border asking for help. this is unacceptable.” – Mayor Salinas on CNN

ACCORDING TO THE U-S DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY – THESE DAILY LARGE MIGRANT CROSSING NUMBERS HAVEN’T BEEN SEEN SINCE JUST BEFORE TITLE-42 WAS LIFTED IN MAY.

THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC-ERA POLICY ALLOWED U-S OFFICIALS TO TURN AWAY MIGRANTS CITING HEALTH CONCERNS.

ON MAY 8, 2023 – BORDER OFFICIALS REPORTED MORE THAN 10,000 MIGRANT CROSSINGS IN A SINGLE DAY. AND NOW – 4.5 MONTHS LATER – THEY’RE SEEING SIMILAR NUMBERS… AS CNN REPORTS – THERE WERE MORE THAN 8,000 APPREHENSIONS ON MONDAY ALONE… AND MORE THAN 8,600 CROSSINGS IN A 24-HOUR PERIOD – BETWEEN WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY – THIS WEEK.

POLITICIANS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE AISLE ARE RESPONDING.

FOR MORE THAN A YEAR NOW – TEXAS’ REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR GREG ABBOTT — HAS BEEN BUSSING THOUSANDS OF MIGRANTS – TO SANCTUARY CITIES… INCLUDING CHICAGO, L-A, D-C, AND N-Y-C.

NEW YORK CITY’S DEMOCRATIC MAYOR ERIC ADAMS AND PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS – HAD DECLARED THE CITY A “SANCTUARY CITY”…
AND THIS YEAR — MORE THAN 100,000 THOUSAND MIGRANTS HAVE SHOWN UP IN NYC. NOW – JUST LAST WEEK – MAYOR ADAMS SAID THE INFLUX WOULD “DESTROY” NEW YORK. IN RESPONSE – THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCED IT’S EXTENDING TEMPORARY PROTECTED STATUS FOR VENEZUELANS – WHO’VE BEEN IN THE U-S SINCE BEFORE JULY 31ST – SO THEY CAN LIVE AND WORK IN THE COUNTRY LEGALLY.

DHS ESTIMATES THIS WILL HELP 470,000 MIGRANTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

MAYOR ADAMS IS NOW PLANNING TO START EVICTING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF MIGRANTS TO DISCOURAGE NEW ARRIVALS.

BUT FOR NOW… THAT’S NOT STOPPING MIGRANTS FROM COMING FROM CROSSING THE U-S SOUTHERN BORDER.

GOVERNOR ABBOTT SAID THE TEXAS NATIONAL GUARD INSTALLED MILES OF RAZOR WIRE– TO HELP DETER ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FROM POURING INTO TEXAS.

THAT PLAN BACKFIRED.

“and we have repelled tens of thousands of migrants who’ve tried to get into Texas illegally and then yesterday, joe biden had his border patrol officers cut through that razor wire and then they pulled the razor wire and then suddenly let in hundreds if not thousands of people illegally into Texas, into the United States.”

GOVERNOR ABBOTT SAYS HE THEN ORDERED THE TEXAS NATIONAL GUARD TO DOUBLE THE RAZOR WIRE ALONG THE BORDER – TO HELP KEEP DENYING ACCESS TO MIGRANTS.

THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCED IT WILL ALSO DEPLOY 800 TROOPS TO ASSIST CUSTOMS AND BORDER PATROL IN PROCESSING MIGRANTS THAT HAVE CROSSED THE SOUTHERN BORDER.

Floridians and tourists tired of the four-hour drive between Miami and Orlando now have a new way to travel. This faster mode of transportation is looking to revolutionize the train industry.

Brightline launched its privately-funded, high-speed passenger train service between the two major cities on Friday, Sept. 22, with speeds reaching up to 125 miles per hour. The $5 billion investment expanded the company’s Miami-West Palm Beach line.

The plan is for 32 trains to run the 3.5 hour, 235-mile trip daily, costing single passengers $158 for a roundtrip business seat and $298 for first class.

Brightline is hoping 8 million people will travel on its high-speed line annually.

However, the company has seen several past setbacks and controversies, including a 17-month COVID-19 pandemic-related shutdown and a failed deal with Virgin Group founder Richard Branson.

Brightline trains have the highest death rate of all railroads in the U.S., according to The Associated Press’ analysis of federal data.

There have been 98 fatalities on its tracks since the company began operations in 2018; that’s about one death for 32,000 miles its trains travel.

The Sun Sentinel reported that Friday’s inaugural Orlando-bound ride was delayed due to an accident involving a pedestrian and a Brightline train.

Though none of the deaths have been found to be the company’s fault, Brightline has instituted safety improvements. Those safety measures include adding closed-circuit cameras, installing updated crossing gates and posting suicide prevention signage.

FLORIDIANS AND TOURISTS TIRED OF THE FOUR-HOUR DRIVE BETWEEN MIAMI AND ORLANDO NOW HAVE A NEW WAY TO TRAVEL – A MUCH FASTER WAY – AND ONE THAT IS LOOKING TO REVOLUTIONIZE THE TRAIN INDUSTRY.

BRIGHTLINE LAUNCHED ITS PRIVATELY FUNDED HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER TRAIN SERVICE BETWEEN THE TWO MAJOR CITIES FRIDAY – WITH SPEEDS THAT CAN REACH UP TO 125 MILES PER HOUR. IT’S A FIVE BILLION DOLLAR INVESTMENT THAT EXPANDED THE COMPANY’S MIAMI-WEST PALM BEACH LINE.

THE PLAN IS FOR 32 TRAINS TO RUN THE THREE AND HALF HOUR (3.5), TWO HUNDRED THIRTY FIVE (235) MILE TRIP DAILY – COSTING SINGLE PASSENGERS $158 FOR A ROUNDTRIP BUSINESS SEAT AND $298 FOR FIRST CLASS.

BRIGHTLINE’S OWNERS — FORTRESS INVESTMENT GROUP — IS HOPING EIGHT MILLION PEOPLE WILL TRAVEL ON THIS HIGH-SPEED LINE ANNUALLY. HOWEVER, THE COMPANY HAS SEEN SEVERAL SETBACKS AND CONTROVERSIES IN THE PAST INCLUDING A 17-MONTH COVID-19 PANDEMIC RELATED SHUTDOWN AND A FAILED DEAL WITH VIRGIN GROUP FOUNDER RICHARD BRANSON.

BRIGHTLINES TRAINS HAVE THE HIGHEST DEATH RATE OF ALL RAILROADS IN THE U.S., ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS’ ANALYSIS OF FEDERAL DATA – WITH 98 FATALITIES ON ITS TRACKS SINCE THE COMPANY BEGAN OPERATIONS IN 2018 – THAT’S ABOUT ONE DEATH FOR EVERY THIRTY THOUSAND (32,000) MILES ITS TRAINS TRAVEL.

THE SUN SENTINEL REPORTS FRIDAY’S INAUGURAL HIGH-SPEED RIDE BETWEEN MIAMI AND ORLANDO WAS DELAYED DUE TO AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN AND A BRIGHTLINE TRAIN.

THOUGH NONE OF THE DEATHS HAVE BEEN FOUND TO BE THE COMPANY’S FAULT – BRIGHTLINE HAS INSTITUTED SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS INCLUDING ADDING CLOSED-CIRCUIT CAMERAS, INSTALLING UPDATED CROSSING GATES AND POSTING SUICIDE PREVENTION SIGNAGE.

Pentagon explains how government shutdown would impact defense

Efforts to approve military and government funding are at a standstill in Congress. The House failed to approve the rules for debate on a bill to fund the military twice — lawmakers didn’t even get to the final vote.

A small group of the chamber’s most conservative Republicans banned together to stop the bill from advancing.

“This is a whole new concept of individuals that just want to burn the whole place down. It doesn’t work,” Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., told reporters.

The Pentagon does not insert itself into politics. Military and civilian officials don’t like to comment on ongoing negotiations, but they aren’t afraid to explain how a government shutdown or continuing resolution will impact them.

“Many of us have been through shutdowns. They are extremely damaging to our readiness, retention and morale,” Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said during the Air, Space & Cyber Conference

Kendall had a request for Congress.

“Do not put us under a continuing resolution for the first quarter of the fiscal year. Now the ship may have sailed on this request, but CRs of any length are hugely inefficient and delay much needed modernization,” Kendall said.

Kendall said the military could manage a short-term continuing resolution, but anything beyond December would do serious damage to national security. In particular, it would delay funding the Pentagon needs to advance programs meant to deter adversaries including China, Russia and Iran.

The 2024 Defense Authorization Act also authorizes the improvement and replacement of barracks that are low quality in an attempt to improve morale and retention. A recent report from the Government Accountability Office found that some military barracks had sewage overflows in bathrooms, mold and cracked pipes.

“CRs are just short-term, essentially Band-Aid solutions. They don’t allow us to start up new programs, they keep funding levels the same. So it’s never a good thing to continue operating under a CR. We hope that’s not the case. We’ve done it before. If there is a shutdown, we will take the proper measures in order to ensure that, you know, we can keep operating, we can still ensure our readiness, that our national security interests are still protected and intact.”

Sabrina Singh, deputy press secretary

The 2024 spending bill is worth $826.5 billion. It includes a 5% pay raise for the troops and money to build next-generation aircraft, tactical combat vehicles and submarines.

Watchdog: US troops living in unsafe barracks with sewage, methane gas, filth

Friday

Share

A government watchdog has announced its findings after studying the living conditions in U.S. military barracks, a concern it said goes back decades. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) began looking into the Department of Defense’s housing management after reports of poor living conditions in barracks surfaced.

According to the report released Tuesday, Sept. 19, The GAO found that the Department of Defense does not reliably assess living conditions, and some barracks “pose potentially serious health and safety risks.”

According to officials, thousands of U.S. service members live in substandard living conditions. The 118-page report details a slew of issues, including broken fire systems, black mold, sewage, squatters, poor water quality and pests.

“One installation we visited in October 2022 had recently closed barracks due to legionella bacteria found in the building plumbing systems — an issue that has been challenging to remediate, according to officials,” the report read.

In some instances, the watchdog reported the smell of methane gas seeping through aging sewage pipes that routinely crack and need to be replaced.

The investigation also found that at one installation, “service members are responsible for cleaning biological waste that may remain in a barracks room after a suicide.”

In the report, the GAO says that the Department of Defense does not have complete funding information, adding that the DOD requested around $15 billion for facility sustainment for 2024. However, according to the report, the department “could not identify” how much of that money would be spent on barracks, or how much has been spent on housing allowances for service members who didn’t live in the barracks due to poor living conditions.

These findings come after the GAO examined and analyzed DOD policies and budgets, conducted interviews with DOD housing officials, and toured barracks at military bases in Texas, California, Colorado, and Washington, D.C.

The Government Accountability Office has given the DOD 31 recommendations to remedy the poor living conditions in which thousands of service members preside. All 31 recommendations are listed as “open,” meaning action has not yet been taken.

A GOVERNMENT WATCHDOG HAS ANNOUNCED ITS FINDINGS AFTER STUDYING THE LIVING CONDITIONS IN U.S. MILITARY BARRACKS –  A CONCERN IT SAYS THAT HAS GONE BACK DECADES

THE U.S. GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY OFFICE BEGAN LOOKING INTO THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE’S HOUSING MANAGEMENT AFTER REPORTS OF INADEQUATE HOUSING CONDITIONS CAME TO THE SURFACE.

ACCORDING TO THE REPORT RELEASED THIS WEEK, THE GAO  FOUND THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE  DOES NOT RELIABLY ASSESS LIVING CONDITIONS AND SOME BARRACKS – QUOTE – “POSE POTENTIALLY SERIOUS HEALTH AND SAFETY RISKS.”

ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS, THOUSANDS OF U.S. SERVICE MEMBERS LIVE IN SUBSTANDARD CONDITIONS. THE ONE HUNDRED-AND-EIGHTEEN PAGE REPORT DETAILS A SLEW OF ISSUES INCLUDING BROKEN FIRE-SYSTEMS, BLACK MOLD, SEWAGE, SQUATTERS, POOR WATER QUALITY, AND PESTS.

IN SOME INSTANCES… THE WATCHDOG REPORTS THE SMELL OF METHANE GAS SEEPS THROUGH AGING SEWAGE PIPES THAT ROUTINELY CRACK AND NEED TO BE REPLACED.

IN THE REPORT, THE G.A.O. SAYS THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE  DOES NOT HAVE COMPLETE FUNDING INFORMATION… ADDING THAT THE D.O.D. REQUESTED AROUND FIFTEEN-BILLION DOLLARS FOR FACILITY SUSTAINMENT FOR 2024… BUT ACCORDING TO THE WATCHDOG REPORT, COULD NOT IDENTIFY HOW MUCH OF THIS TOTAL WOULD BE SPENT TOWARD BARRACKS… OR HOW MUCH HAS BEEN SPENT ON HOUSING ALLOWANCES FOR SERVICE MEMBERS WHO DIDN’T LIVE IN THE BARRACKS BECAUSE OF POOR LIVING CONDITIONS.

THESE FINDINGS COME AFTER THE G.A.O EXAMINED AND ANALYZED D.O.D. POLICIES AND BUDGETS, CONDUCTED INTERVIEWS WITH D.O.D. HOUSING OFFICIALS, AND TOURED BARRACKS.

NOW THE GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY OFFICE HAS GIVEN THE D.O.D. 31 RECOMMENDATIONS TO REMEDY THE POOR LIVING CONDITIONS IN WHICH THOUSANDS OF SERVICE MEMBERS ARE FORCED TO PRESIDE.

CURRENTLY ALL THIRTY-ONE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE LISTED AS “OPEN.” MEANING ACTION HAS NOT YET BEEN TAKEN.

Microsoft one step closer to $69 billion purchase of Activision

Friday

Share

Microsoft is one step closer to purchasing Activision in a blockbuster $69 billion deal. On Friday, Sept. 22, U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced the sale of Activision by Microsoft has preliminary approval pending third-party consultation and a final decision.

This comes after the CMA rejected a deal proposed by Microsoft over concerns that “the deal would harm competition in cloud gaming in the U.K.” Microsoft returned to the drawing board and submitted a new deal for the CMA to review in August 2023.

“The CMA considers that the restructured deal makes important changes that substantially address the concerns it set out in relation to the original transaction earlier this year,” the release read.

In the new deal, Microsoft will not purchase cloud gaming rights for Activision games. Instead, the cloud rights will be sold to third-party, Ubisoft Entertainment SA. The reason for this, according to the CMA, is to keep Microsoft from limiting access to Activision’s games or keep them from rivals.

“The prior sale of the cloud gaming rights will establish Ubisoft as a key supplier of content to cloud gaming services, replicating the role that Activision would have played in the market as an independent player,” the release read.

Now, CMA has sent the newly structured proposal to a third party for consultation and is expected to make a decision ahead of the Oct. 18 deadline.

Microsoft’s vice chair and president said on X that the company is encouraged by the latest news from the CMA.

The deal, announced in January 2022, received a lot of pushback from antitrust advocates globally. In July 2023, a U.S. federal judge ruled in favor of the deal following the European Union’s decision in May 2023.

MICROSOFT HAS CLEARED ANOTHER HURDLE AS IT LOOKS TO BUY THE VIDEO GAME COMPANY ACTIVISION BLIZZARD.

THIS MORNING – OFFICIALS WITH BRITAIN’S COMPETITION AND MARKETS AUTHORITY SIGNALED IT WILL MOVE TOWARDS APPROVING THE DEAL AFTER MICROSOFT MADE SOME CHANGES TO ADDRESS THE GROUP’S CONCERNS – NAMELY AGREEING NOT TO PURCHASE ACTIVISION’S CLOUD GAMING DIVISION. THOSE RIGHTS WOULD NOW BE SOLD TO UBISOFT.

THE UK REGULATOR SAID THE RESTRUCTURING QUOTE “OPENS THE DOOR TO THE DEAL BEING CLEARED.”

ITS FINAL DECISION – THE LAST NEEDED TO MAKE MICROSOFT’S ACQUISITION OFFICIAL – IS EXPECTED IN MID-OCTOBER.

THE DEAL WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED IN JANUARY 2022 – BUT HAS FACED PUSHBACK BY ANTITRUST ADVOCATES AROUND THE WORLD. IN JULY – A US FEDERAL JUDGE RULED AGAINST THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION’S OPPOSITION TO THE DEAL. THE EUROPEAN UNION ALSO AGREED TO THE DEAL IN MAY.

China’s military activity is heating up as Taiwan officials reported on Monday, Sept. 18. According to the reports, China has been sending groups of fighter jets and warships into areas around Taiwan.

The Taiwan Ministry of National Defense reported that more than a hundred Chinese aircrafts and nine Chinese naval ships were operating near the island between Sunday, Sept. 17, and Monday, Sept. 18.

The reports state that around 40 aircraft crossed into Taiwan’s side of the Taiwan Strait. Authorities and analysts in the U.S. and Taiwan say these latest actions by Beijing are more about training than sending a message, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Officials worry that China is working on how to most effectively encircle Taiwan and prevent the U.S. from coming to the island’s aid in response to an invasion.

This comes as the U.S. sends two drone-ship prototypes to Japan for their first deployments in the western Pacific. These drones have surveillance and attack capabilities that are being tested by the Navy. Experts believe these drones could prove useful in any future conflicts with china.

The Taiwan Ministry of National Defense said in its release that Taiwan leaders are responding to China’s actions calmly as they call on officials in Beijing to take responsibility and put an immediate stop to “such destructive unilateral actions.”

Senate confirms top military nominees, Tuberville says his hold will continue

Thursday

Share

The Senate approved three key military nominees that had been held up by Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., in overwhelmingly bipartisan votes. That means Gen. Eric Smith is the new Marine Corps commandant, Gen. Randy George is now chief of staff of the Army, and Air Force Gen. Charles Brown will become chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff when Gen. Mark Milley retires at the end of September.

The delay in their approval led to a bitter fight.

“These men should already be confirmed. They should already be serving in their new positions. The Senate should not have to go through procedural hoops just to please one brazen and misguided senator,” Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said when he announced the votes.

Tuberville began placing holds on all military nominees — 300 and counting — in March. He is protesting a Pentagon policy that provides paid time off and travel expenses for military service members who get an abortion.

“These three honorable men will finally be able to assume their positions and the abortion policy that Senator Tuberville abhors will remain in place. Senator Tuberville will have accomplished nothing,” Schumer said.

Straight Arrow News asked Tuberville for his response to Schumer.

“Well, we got three new promotions as of today. A lot more than he’s had. And he would have never done this had we not called his hand. And so he blinked, he knows how to do it,” Tuberville said. “Main thing is the American people need to see that we can do this, even with my holds. But he won’t admit it. And again, we’re gonna keep pushing to get the policy moved back because this is an illegal policy.”

Tuberville’s hold prevented the nominees from being approved quickly and in large groups. They could still be approved individually with full votes. The big difference is the time it takes.

Tuberville responded to critics who contend spending extra time on military nominees takes away from other legislative priorities.

“It’s going to. Problem is we’ve been doing this for seven months, we could have been doing a few a week. But they refused to do it because they didn’t think they were wrong. Well, they’re dead wrong on this. And so the American people on a controversial subject like this, abortion, need to have their voice heard through their senator and congressman. It doesn’t need to be dictated from the White House with a memo or the Pentagon,” Tuberville said.

Tuberville said he will continue his hold on the other 300 nominees. He said if they’re going to be approved, the Pentagon can either change its abortion policy or the Senate can vote on each one individually.

Democrats have called Tuberville’s hold a threat to national security, while Republicans have said they disagree with the way in which he’s protesting. But when Schumer announced the votes, Republicans said he should have done it a while ago.

“Because while everybody is grousing about the senator from Alabama, Chuck Schumer knew full well that he could have done this months and months ago. If we had been lining those nominees up, we wouldn’t have these vacancies today,” Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, said.

The Pentagon has also said the hold hurts its operations. Those who have been nominated but not approved serve in an acting capacity and have limits on their authority. Pentagon press secretary Gen. Pat Ryder recently made a football analogy, and said imagine if NFL coaches were serving in an acting capacity as the season started.

AG Garland’s testimony got heated as Republicans, Democrats traded barbs

Attorney General Merrick Garland testified in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Sept. 20. It is the first time Garland has testified to the committee since former President Donald Trump and Hunter Biden, President Biden’s son, have both been indicted on federal charges in separate cases.

Republicans focused on discrediting Garland’s leadership at the Department of Justice, attempting to portray Garland as an attorney general who has created two systems of justice: one for Americans and one for the Biden family.

“Americans believe that today, in our country, there is unequal application of the law,” Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan said. “They believe that because there is. Republicans are committed to making that change.”

In his opening statements, Garland fought back, stressing that the DOJ’s job is to pursue justice without fear or favor and apply the law equally to everyone.

“Our job is to uphold the rule of law,” Garland said. “That means that we apply the same laws to everyone. There is not one set of laws for the powerful and another for the powerless; one for the rich, and one for the poor; one for democrats, another for republicans; or different rules, depending upon one’s race or ethnicity or religion.

“Our job is to pursue justice, without fear or favor. Our job is not to do what is politically convenient. Our job is not to take orders from the president, from Congress, or from anyone else, about who or what to criminally investigate. As the president himself has said, and I reaffirm today: I am not the president’s lawyer. I will also add I am not Congress’s prosecutor. The Justice Department works for the American people. Our job is to follow the facts and the law. And that is what we do.”

During the hearing, Republicans grilled the nation’s top law enforcement official on his department’s investigations into Hunter Biden for alleged tax and firearms crimes.

They pressed Garland on why special counsel David Weiss allowed the statute of limitations to run out on potential charges against Hunter Biden. Garland answered the question the same each time.

Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La.: “Why has the Justice Department dragged out this investigation for so long? Does it really take years to determine if Hunter Biden lied on a federal form related to purchasing a firearm?”

Garland: “Mr. Weiss was a long-time career prosecutor. President Trump appointed him.”

Johnson: “You’re not answering the question. Is that standard procedure? Should it take that long to make such a simple determination?”

Garland: “I’m answering the question, give me an opportunity to do so.”

Johnson: “Okay.”

Garland: “He was charged with that investigation under the previous administration. He has continued. He knows how to conduct investigations. I have not intruded or attempted to evaluate that, because that was the promise I made to the Senate.”

Rep. Dan Bishop, R-N.C.: “Are you unaware that the statutes of limitations have in fact been allowed to expire after there having been tolling agreements in place?”

Garland: “I’m going to say again. Determination of where to bring cases, and which kinds of cases to bring, was left to Mr. Weiss.”

Bishop: “Yes sir, I’m aware that you said that. That’s part of the problem.”

Chairman Jordan, R-Ohio: “It’s one thing to have a gun charge in Delaware, that doesn’t involve the president of the United States, but Burisma? Oh my, that goes right to the White House. We can’t have that. And we can slow-walk this thing along.

“We can even extend the statute of limitations and then we can intentionally let it lapse. And we know this investigation was slow. Here’s what everyone said… Every witness said it was slow-walked and we know why. They slow walked it long enough to have the statute of limitations run so they wouldn’t have to get into Burisma. Tell me where I’m wrong.”

Garland: “I think I’ve tried to make clear. I don’t know specifics of investigation. Much of what you’re describing occurred during the Trump administration with a Justice Department appointed by President Trump.”

Jordan: “No it didn’t. This is four-and-a-half years of investigation; we’re talking about the last few years. Your statement was just this year, March 1st to Senator Grassley.”

Garland: “I’m sorry, I was trying to respond. Your descriptions of what the IRS agents said about certain things…”

Jordan: “The statute of limitations is six years. That lapsed here in the Biden administration.”

Garland: “On the statute of limitations I will say again. That the explanation for why the statute of limitations was lapsed, if it was, has to come from Mr. Weiss.”

Meanwhile, on the other side of the aisle, Democrats defended garland – and asked him about other issues including a potential government shut down, abortion, crime, and the U.S.-Mexico Border.

Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn.: “If there’s a shutdown of our federal government, how will that affect the Department of Justice and how will it affect policing in local communities?”

Garland: “I have not done a complete calculation on the effects of a shutdown, on the difference between which employees are indispensable under the statute, and which ones are not. It will certainly disrupt all our normal programs including our grant programs to state and local law enforcement, and our ability to conduct our normal efforts, with respect to the entire scope of our activities including helping state and locals fight violent crime.”

Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y.: “One Trump-like presidential candidate has said that we should abolish the FBI altogether. Mr. Attorney General, what would be the impact on America if we defund the FBI?”

Garland: “Defunding the FBI would leave the United States naked to the influence of the Chinese Communist Party, to the attacks by Iranians on American citizens and attempts to assassinate former officials, to the Russian aggression, to North Korean cyberattacks, to violent crime in the United States, which the FBI helps to fight against, to all kinds of espionage, to domestic violent extremists who have attacked our churches, our synagogues, our mosques, and who have killed individuals out of racial hatred. I just cannot imagine the consequences of defunding the FBI, but they would be catastrophic.”

Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-Calif.: “Mr. Weiss was appointed by then President Trump. Your decision was to leave the Trump-appointed attorney completely in charge of this, hands off from you. He makes all the calls without interference from the attorney general. Is that correct?”

Garland: “That is correct.”

Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa.: “Thank you, Mr. Attorney General. Thank you for your decades of faithful service to our country, to our Constitution, and to our rule of law. Thank you for putting up with this today. The American people are watching. They know what’s going on here. This is a gross misuse of your time, your team’s time, and our time. It is a shameful circus. It has a goal. The goal is to spew lies and disinformation ultimately to tear away at the confidence of our independent institutions, in your case today, our very important Department of Justice.”

Things heated up when Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., fired multiple questions at Garland, not giving him much of a chance to answer.

Gaetz: “So, Hunter Biden is selling art to pay for his $15,000 a month rent in Malibu. How can you guarantee that the people buying that art aren’t doing so to gain favor with the president?”

Garland: “The job of the Justice Department is to investigate criminal allegations.”

Gaetz: “Are you investigating this? Someone who bought Hunter Biden’s art ended up with a prestigious appointment to a federal position. Doesn’t it look weird that he’s become this immediate success in the art world as his dad is president of the United States? Isn’t that odd?”

Garland: “I’m not going to comment about any specific…”

Gaetz: “You’re not going to comment, not going to investigate.”

Then, about 40 minutes later, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., accused Garland of being in contempt of Congress for not commenting on ongoing investigations. This led to Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., displaying two computers, showcasing Jordan’s refusal to comply with a congressional subpoena regarding his actions on Jan. 6, 2021.

Swalwell: “My colleague just said you should be held in contempt of Congress, and that is quite rich. Because the guy who’s leaving the hearing room right now, Mr. Jordan, is about 500 days into evading his subpoena. About 500 days.

“So, if we’re going to talk about contempt of Congress, let’s get real. Are you serious that Jim Jordan, a witness to one of the greatest crimes ever committed in America, a crime where more prosecutions have occurred than any other crime committed in America refuses to help his country. And we’re going to get lectured about subpoena compliance and contempt of Congress? Jim Jordan won’t even honor a lawful subpoena. Are you kidding me?”

Overall, the hearing seemed like it was two hearings: one for Republicans to dig in and ask questions about Hunter Biden investigations, and one for Democrats to praise Garland and the work being done by the DOJ.

In the end, Rep. Nadler gave Garland the chance to clear up any confusion or answer any questions in greater detail. He chose to use that time to reaffirm the DOJ’s commitment to America.

“I just, again, I want to assure the American public and this committee that the Justice Department follows the rule of law,” Garland concluded. “It enforces the law equally, without regard to persons and without regard to parties, and that we do the best we can to follow the facts and the law.”

ATTORNEY GENERAL MERRICK GARLAND – TESTIFYING IN FRONT OF THE HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE ON CAPITOL HILL WEDNESDAY – FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP AND NOW PRESIDENT BIDEN’S SON – HUNTER BIDEN – HAVE BOTH BEEN INDICTED ON FEDERAL CHARGES IN SEPARATE CASES.

REPUBLICANS FOCUSED ON DISCREDITING GARLAND’S LEADERSHIP AT THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE – ATTEMPTING TO PORTRAY GARLAND AS AN ATTORNEY GENERAL WHO’S CREATED TWO SYSTEMS OF JUSTICE: ONE FOR AMERICANS.. AND ONE FOR THE BIDEN FAMILY.

Jordan: “Americans believe that today, in our country, there is unequal application of the law – they believe that because there is. republicans are committed to making that change”

IN HIS OPENING STATEMENTS… GARLAND FOUGHT BACK – STRESSING THAT THE DOJ’S JOB IS TO PURSUE JUSTICE WITHOUT FEAR OR FAVOR… THAT THE DOJ WORKS FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE… AND HIS DEPARTMENT APPLIES THE LAW EQUALLY TO EVERYONE.

Garland: “And our job is to uphold the rule of law. That means that we apply the same laws to everyone. Our job is to follow the facts and the law. And that is what we do.”

DURING THE HEARING…

REPUBLICANS GRILLED THE NATION’S TOP LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL ON HIS DEPARTMENT’S INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE PRESIDENT’S SON – HUNTER BIDEN – FOR ALLEGED TAX AND FIREARMS CRIMES.

THEY PRESSED GARLAND ON WHY SPECIAL COUNSEL DAVID WEISS ALLOWED THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS TO RUN OUT ON POTENTIAL CHARGES AGAINST HUNTER BIDEN.

GARLAND ANSWERED THE QUESTION THE SAME EACH TIME…

Johnson: “let me get to the fact… mr. Weiss has been lead prosecutor on hunter case since 2018, current?”

“I’m sorry?”

Johnson: “mr. Weiss has been lead prosecutor on hunter case since 2018.. now here’s the question…”

Garland: “he’s been lead prosecutor since he was appointed by president trump.”

Johnson: “Why has the justice department dragged out this investigation for so long? It shouldn’t take years to figure out if hunter biden lied on a federal form to purchase a firearm”

Garland: “mr. weiss was a long time career prosecutor. President trump appointed him…”

Johnson: “you’re not answering the question. Is that standard procedure? Should something like that take that long?

Garland: “give me a chance to answer… I did not intrude because that was the promise I had made to the senate.”

garland: “I don’t know specifics of investigation… happened under trump administration.”

Jordan: “no it didn’t.. statute of limitations is six years… that lapsed here in the biden administration.”

Garland: “if it was lapsed, that answer will have to come from mr. weiss.”

MEANWHILE – ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE AISLE…

DEMOCRATS DEFENDED GARLAND – AND ASKED HIM ABOUT OTHER ISSUES – INCLUDING a POTENTIAL GOVERNMENT SHUT DOWN… ABORTION… CRIME AND THE BORDER.

Cohen: “if there’s a shutdown of our federal government shutdown.. how will that effect the department of justice and how will it affect policing in local communities?”

Garland: “I haven’t done a complete calculation on the effects of a shutdown. It will certainly disrupt all of our normal programs. Including our grant programs to state and local law enforcement and our ability to conduct our normal efforts with respect  to the entire scope of our activities including helping state and locals fight violent crime.”

Nadler: “one trump-like presidential candidate has said that we should abolish the fbi altogether. Mr. attorney general.. what would be the impact on America if we defund the fbi?”

lofgren: “mr. weiss was appointed by then president trump. your decision was to leave the trump appointed attorney completely in charge of this, hands off from you. he makes all the calls without interference from the attorney general. is that correct?”

garland: “that is correct”

dean: “thank you mr. attorney general. Thank you for your decades of faithful service to our country, to our constitution, and to our rule of law. Thank you for putting up with this today. Uh, the american people are watching. They know what’s going on here. This is a gross mis-use of your time, your team’s time, and our time. It is a shameful circus. It has a goal. The goal is to spew lies and disinformation ultimately to tear away at the confidence of our independent institutions, in your case today, our very important department of justice.”

THINGS REALLY HEATED UP WHEN REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE MATT GAETZ FIRED MULTIPLE QUESTIONS AT GARLAND… NOT GIVING HIM MUCH OF A CHANCE TO ANSWER…

Gaetz: “so hunter biden is selling art to pay for his $15,000 dollar a month rent in malibu. How can you guarantee that the people buying that art aren’t doing so to gain favor with the president?”

Garland: the job of the justice department is to investigate criminal allegations. We have information…”

Gaetz: “you’re not going to comment, not going to investigate so…”

THEN – ABOUT 40 MINUTES LATER… REPUBLICAN REPRESENTATIVE THOMAS MASSIE ACCUSED GARLAND OF BEING IN CONTEMPT OF CONGRESS FOR NOT COMMENTING ON ONGOING INVESTIGATIONS…

WHICH LEAD TO DEMOCRATIC REPRESENTATIVE ERIC SWALWELL DISPLAYING TWO COMPUTERS – SHOWCASING CHAIRMAN JORDAN’S REFUSAL TO COMPLY WITH A CONGRESSIONAL SUBPOENA REGARDING HIS ACTIONS ON JANUARY 6, 2021.

Swalwell: “my colleague just said you should be held in contempt of congress and that is quite rich because the guy who’s leaving the hearing room right now, mr. jordan, is about 500 days into evading his subpoena… about 500 days. So if we’re going to talk about contempt of congress… let’s get real. And we’re going to get lectured about subpoena compliance and contempt of congress? Jim jordan won’t even honor a lawful subpoena… are you kidding me??”

OVERALL – THE HEARING SEEMED LIKE IT WAS TWO HEARINGS…

ONE FOR REPUBLICANS TO DIG IN AND ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT HUNTER BIDEN INVESTIGATIONS.

AND ONE FOR DEMOCRATS TO PRAISE GARLAND AND THE WORK BEING DONE BY THE DOJ.

AT THE END.. NADLER GAVE GARLAND THE CHANCE TO CLEAR UP ANY CONFUSIONS OR TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS IN GREATER DETAIL. HE CHOSE TO USE THAT TIME TO REAFFIRM THE DOJ’S COMMITMENT TO AMERICA.

garland: “i just, again, i want to assure the american public and this committee that the justice department follows the rule of law. it enforces the law equally without regard to persons and without regard to parties, and that we do the best we can to follow the facts and the law.”

MindGym helping Air and Space Forces get mental reps

Thursday

Life in the 21st century is filled with distraction. Studies show we spend almost half our waking lives distracted. In the Air Force, like other service branches, distractions could mean disaster.

So, the Department of the Air Force is working to improve mental toughness. Straight Arrow News was given an opportunity to see how the Air Force is working toward that improvement at this year’s AFA Air, Space and Cyber conference in National Harbor, Maryland.

It’s called the MindGym. It’s an aluminum cube that stands 7 feet tall. One side opens up, revealing an interior space filled with mirrors, and lined with hidden LED lights and speakers.

“It’s a controlled environment,” Brandon Murphy said. “It’s a fully immersive environment built for mental skills training to support our airmen with resilience training and performance mindset training, essentially.”

Murphy works for the company behind the MindGym, Lumena Labs. As the name implies, it’s literally a workout space for the brain. It won’t help people slim down or look good for summer, but Murphy said it can help them deal with the world around them in a more positive way.

“It’s the only thing I know how to do to kind of preserve my own mental well-being. When I started, I never meditated in my life,” Murphy said. “I didn’t know anything about mindfulness. I’m very much the type of person that every single day I have every hour blocked. So, the ability to kind of dedicate some time towards my mental fitness, if you will, completely changed my life honestly.”

Dr. Janelle MacAulay was a combat pilot in the Air Force. After a distinguished career stretching two decades, MacAulay helped design the curriculum for the MindGym.

Just like you would do physical push-ups to train your body, we are training people to do mental push-ups to start training their mind.

Dr. Janelle MacAulay

By putting their brain through a mental bootcamp, MacAulay said participants “can be more focused, more pleasant, more productive. Especially when they’re doing things inside high-pressure moments.”

So, how does it work?

Participants step inside the mirror-lined cube where a series of lights and speakers are also embedded. Once they sit down and the door is shut, it’s time for the show.

This image is from the MindGym curriculum designed by Dr. Janelle MacAulay.

Air Force 2nd Lt. Jeffrey Wamsley described what it was like the first time he used the MindGym while at ASC 2023, “You just see yourself in like all these different areas and it’s like, ‘Okay.’ Then, you know, as I was sitting all these voices just started coming up and they were overlapping and it’s like, ‘Whoa! This is already getting kind of interesting.’”

It’s interesting because the participants are exposed to an experience unlike anything they’d see in their average day. Programmed lights, soundscapes, and MacAulay’s voice guide participants through a series of mental exercises designed to help the brain strengthen and react better to stress.

“Because we live in a highly distracted world, we tend to make more errors,” MacAulay said. “We tend to see our stress as more overwhelming than it needs to be, and those factors contribute to a degradation in our performance. Especially when we’re doing something where lives are on the line. As warfighters, we can’t afford that. We need to be on the cutting edge of learning the right mental skills so that we can start thriving in those environments, bringing our best self forward, no matter what the challenges.”

And the results? Almost immediate.

“[The MindGym] almost forces you to stop worrying about whatever it was before you stepped in. This was just like a five-minute session, and you know, all the stuff I was worrying about before I got in there, I forgot about it for a little while. Just kind of helps you recharge,” 2nd Lt. Wamsley said.

The MindGym is currently helping airmen and guardians recharge at six different air bases with plans to expand to eight soon. MacAulay said she looks forward to the day when every member of the military has access to the benefits of the MindGym, regardless of service branch.

IF YOU EVER FIND YOURSELF WANDERING AROUND THE EXPO FLOOR AT THE AFA’S AIR, SPACE AND CYBER CONFERENCE, YOU’RE GOING TO SEE SOME COOL STUFF. THERE ARE MODELS, SIMULATORS, DRONES, EVEN MODELS THAT SIMULATE DRONES. WHEREVER YOU LOOK, THERE’S BOUND TO BE SOMETHING THAT CATCHES YOUR EYE.

Brandon Murphy: So behind me, we have the aluminum MindGym. It’s a controlled environment, a fully immersive environment built for mental skills training to support our airmen with resilience training and performance mindset training, essentially.

AS THE NAME IMPLIES, THE 7 FOOT BY 7 FOOT CUBE IS A GYM FOR YOUR MIND. IT WON’T HELP YOU SLIM DOWN OR LOOK GOOD FOR SUMMER, BUT THE COMPANY BEHIND IT, LUMENA, SAYS IT CAN HELP YOU DEAL WITH THE WORLD AROUND YOU IN A MORE POSITIVE WAY.

Murphy: It’s the only thing I know how to do to kind of preserve my own mental wellbeing. When I started, I never meditated in my life. I didn’t know anything about mindfulness. I’m very much the type of person that every single day I have every hour blocked. The ability to kind of dedicate some time towards my mental fitness, if you will, completely changed my life honestly.

DR. JANELLE MACAULAY WAS A COMBAT PILOT IN THE AIR FORCE. SHE HELPED DESIGN THE CURRICULUM FOR THE MINDGYM.

MacAulay: Just like you would do physical push-ups to train your body, we are training people to do mental push-ups to start training their mind so that they can be more focused, more pleasant, more productive. Especially when they’re doing things inside high-pressure moments.

SO, HOW DOES IT WORK? PARTICIPANTS STEP INSIDE THE MIRROR-LINED CUBE WHERE A SERIES OF LIGHTS AND SPEAKERS ARE ALSO EMBEDDED. ONCE THEY SIT DOWN AND THE DOOR IS SHUT, IT’S TIME FOR THE SHOW.

2nd Lt. Jeffrey Wamsley: So, you know, you just see yourself and like all these different areas and it’s like, ‘okay.’ Then, you know, as I was sitting all these voices just started, you know, coming up and like, they were overlapping and it’s like, ‘Whoa! This is already getting kind of interesting.’

IT’S INTERESTING, BECAUSE THE PARTICIPANTS ARE EXPOSED TO AN EXPERIENCE UNLIKE MOST ANYTHING THEY’D SEE IN THEIR AVERAGE DAY. LIGHTS, SOUNDS, AND DR. MCCAULAY’S VOICE GUIDE THEM THROUGH A SERIES OF MENTAL EXERCISES DESIGNED TO HELP THE BRAIN BEEF UP AND REACT BETTER TO STRESS.

MacAulay: Because we live in a highly distracted world, we tend to make more errors. We tend to see our stress as more overwhelming than it needs to be. And those factors contribute to a degradation in our performance, especially when we’re doing something where lives are on the line. And as warfighters we can’t afford that. We need to be on the cutting edge of learning the right mental skills so that we can start thriving in those environments; bringing our best self forward, no matter what the challenges

AND THE RESULTS: ALMOST IMMEDIATE.
Wamsley: It almost, like, forces you to stop worrying about whatever it was before you stepped in. (So, net benefit?) Yeah, I would definitely say so. You know, even this was just like a five-minute session. And you know, I could easily just like, like all the stuff I was worrying about before I got in there, I forgot about it for a little while. Just kind of helps you recharge.

THE MINDGYM IS CURRENTLY HELPING AIRMEN AND GUARDIANS RECHARGE AT SIX DIFFERENT AIR BASES WITH PLANS TO EXPAND TO EIGHT SOON. DOCTOR MACAULAY SAID SHE LOOKS FORWARD TO THE DAY WHEN EVERY MEMBER OF THE MILITARY HAS ACCESS TO THE BENEFITS OF THE MINDGYM, REGARDLESS OF SERVICE BRANCH
