“I’m not a perfect person, as has been acknowledged, saved by the grace of God, by Jesus and Jenny,” Hegseth said.

Hegseth also said many of the accusations against him, including sexual assault, alcohol abuse and financial mismanagement of nonprofits, are false smears.

“All they were out to do Mr. Chairman was to destroy me,” Hegseth said. “And why did they want to destroy me? Because I’m a change agent and a threat to them because Donald Trump was willing to choose me, to empower me, to bring the Defense Department back to what it really should be, which is warfighting.”

The hearing became personal when Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., brought up an incident in California in 2017. A woman accused Hegseth of raping her at a hotel during a work event; Hegseth said the encounter was consensual. Police never charged him but he did sign a non-disclosure agreement with the woman.

“I am shocked that you would stand here and say you were completely cleared,” Kaine said. “Can you so casually cheat on a second wife, and cheat on the mother of a child that had been born two months before, and you tell us you were completely cleared? How is that a complete clear?”

“Senator, the child’s name is Gwendolyn Hope Hegseth, and she’s a child of God, and she’s 7 years old,” Hegseth responded.

Republicans came to Hegseth’s defense, painting him as a good man who has been redeemed.

“How many senators have shown up drunk to vote at night? Have any of you guys asked them to resign from their job? And don’t tell me you’ve never seen it because I know you have,” Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., said. “And then how many senators do you know have gotten divorced for cheating on their wives? Did you ask them to step down?”

Democrats went back on the attack, citing Hegseth’s qualifications and his previous statements about women in combat.

“You’ve said, ‘I don’t want women, I don’t want moms.’ What’s wrong with a mom, by the way? Once you have babies, you, therefore, are no longer able to be lethal?” Sen. Kristin Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said. “You’re basically saying women, after they have children, can’t ever serve in the military in a combat role. It’s a silly thing to say.”

That was also an important issue for Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, a veteran.

“As secretary of defense, will you support women continuing to have the opportunity to serve in combat roles?” Ernst asked.

“Yes, women will have access to ground combat roles given the standards remain high,” Hegseth responded.

After the hearing, multiple Republicans shared their intention to vote for Hegseth. They expressed confidence that he’ll be confirmed

Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth appeared before the Senate Armed Services committee Wednesday where he was grilled about his past behavior and qualifications. Hegseth acknowledged mistakes he’s made, which according to accounts include infidelity and excessive drinking.

Pete Hegseth: “I’m not a perfect person, as has been acknowledged, saved by the grace of God, by Jesus and Jenny.”

But he also said many of the accusations against him, which include sexual assault, alcohol abuse and financial mismanagement of nonprofits are false smears.

The hearing got extremely personal when Senator Tim Kaine brought up an incident that took place in 2017 in California. A woman accused him of raping her at a hotel during a work event, he said the encounter was consensual. He was never charged by the police but signed a non-disclosure agreement.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-VA: “You had just fathered a child two months before by a woman that was not your wife. I am shocked that would stand here and say you were completely cleared. Democrats went back on the attack though regarding Hegseth’s qualifications and his previous statements about women in combat.

Bias Breakdown: Was LA wildfire response failed policy or politicized?

California officials are facing intense scrutiny in the wake of the devastating wildfires that broke out in Los Angeles, causing widespread destruction. The fires, which resulted in the loss of dozens of lives and thousands of homes, have sparked a wave of criticism directed at key figures, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, D, and Janisse Quinones, head of the state’s Water and Power Department.

Bass left for a trip to Ghana on Jan. 4, just two days before the National Weather Service issued warnings of critical fire conditions and strong winds. The Palisades Fire broke out on Jan. 7, and Bass was en route back to Los Angeles five hours later, according to the Mayor’s office, returning to the city on the afternoon of Jan. 8.

The mayor’s absence, combined with recent budget cuts to the Los Angeles Fire Department, amounting to over $17 million, drew significant criticism.

Critics, including the L.A. Fire Department chief, questioned whether the city’s response to the fire could have been more effective. Fire Chief Kristin Crowley expressed frustration over several issues, such as low water pressure from fire hydrants and a lack of adequate resources to tackle the blazes. When repeatedly asked if the city failed the community, she responded “yes.”

Some reports highlighted that three one million gallon water tanks brought in to aid firefighting efforts ran dry after 17 hours, and a nearby reservoir holding 117 million gallons of water had been out of service for nearly a year due to safety regulations.

Janisse Quinones, the head of the L.A. Water and Power Department, is facing scrutiny over these issues. According to city documents, the empty reservoir was designated for firefighting purposes, but had been taken out of service in February 2024 to “meet drinking water safety regulations.” Quinones, who receives a salary double that of her predecessor, has also been criticized for her previous statements about prioritizing equity in the department’s operations. Some reports noted that Quinones was aware of the water shortages months before the fires.

Newsom, who has been on the ground in Los Angeles to oversee the firefighting efforts, has also come under fire. While Newsom has posted video updates about the state’s response, his remarks on a podcast about the fire response have sparked backlash. Newsom acknowledged the lack of clear answers he was receiving, adding that the state had launched an investigation into the fire response. However, he has faced criticism for appearing to shift blame to local leaders during his Pod Save America podcast appearance.

“You’re ultimately responsible as the governor of the state,” the podcaster, Jon Favreau, said.

“Of course, I want to know the answers,” Newsom replied. “I’ve been asked that question by so many people. ‘What happened?’ People on my own team are asking me, ‘What happened?’ And I want to get the answers. I’ll be candid — I wasn’t getting straight answers.”

“You weren’t getting straight answers?” Favreau asked.

“No,” Newsom said. “I was getting different answers.”

What has right-leaning media been saying?

The coverage of the fire response and the political fallout has drawn significant attention from both left- and right-leaning media outlets. Right-leaning outlets have focused on the perceived failures of Democratic policies, including budget cuts to the fire department, and concerns over water resources, while also pointing to state policies they argue contributed to the fire’s severity.

Fox News reported, “Democratic lawmakers are claiming the severity of the Los Angeles wildfires was a result of climate change, despite reports that the city’s fire hydrants ran out of water and the fire department’s budget was slashed just weeks before the Palisades fire destroyed thousands of homes and burned more than 15,000 acres. As the fires gained national attention, Democratic lawmakers across the country began to claim it was climate change rather than state policies that caused the disastrous fire damage.”

The Washington Examiner similarly reported, “Critics said state policies about brush and debris removal fed the fires and argued Newsom ignored years of warnings to change course and avoid the latest disaster. Some furious Californians also said Newsom’s water policy left firefighters without the tools they needed to stop the crisis.”

What has left-leaning media been saying?

In contrast, left-leaning outlets have highlighted the role of Republican figures, including President-elect Donald Trump, in politicizing the situation, with some arguing that Trump and his allies are using the disaster to attack Democratic leadership.

The Washington Post reported, “As California continues to battle catastrophic wildfires consuming entire neighborhoods and taking lives, state and local officials are also fending off President-elect Donald Trump and his allies’ efforts to blame them for the destruction. Instead of offering words of sympathy or pledges of rebuilding, Trump, his billionaire ally Elon Musk and top Republicans have spent much of the past several days blaming Democratic leadership in the state for the crisis.”

CNN similarly reported, “Walls of fire devoured neighborhoods, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee for their lives. But as a cataclysm fueled by windstorms charred swathes of Los Angeles, Donald Trump spotted an opportunity…The conceit of a state and city inflicting self-defeating environmental policies is a perfect fit for Trump’s narrative that liberal governance in blue states and cities invites chaos, crime and misery.”

The political framing of the wildfire response has varied significantly across news outlets. The Washington Post criticized efforts by Trump and his allies to shift blame to state and local officials, while Fox News focused on California’s policies, particularly regarding fire prevention and water management. CNN suggested that Trump was exploiting the situation to promote a narrative against liberal governance, while The Washington Examiner pointed to state policies on brush and debris removal as contributing factors to the fire’s intensity.

As the investigation into the fire response continues, the debate over the role of Democratic leadership and the politicization of the crisis persists. Both local and state leaders are facing questions about their handling of the disaster, and the national conversation is shaped by differing political perspectives on the causes and responses to the wildfires.

THE HANDFUL OF NEWS HEADLINES WE’VE SHOWN YOU OVER CRITICISM OF THE LA MAYOR, LA WATER CHIEF, AND CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR WERE A MIX OF LEFT AND RIGHT LEANING NEWS OUTLETS.

THE STORY IS GETTING WIDE COVERAGE NO MATTER POLITICAL LEANINGS –

BUT ITS THE WAY THE CRITICISM IS FRAMED FROM WITHIN SOME LEFT AND RIGHT LEANING ARTICLES THAT FITS A POLITICAL BIAS.

RIGHT-LEANING NEWS OUTLETS ARE LEANING INTO fire response FAILURES AS DEMOCRATIC FAILURES.

WHILE LEFT-LEANING NEWS OUTLETS SAY THE CRITICISM IS BEING FUELED BY RIGHT-WING FIGURES – LIKE PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP.

THE WASHINGTON POST – A LEFT-LEANING OUTLET –

WROTE – “As California continues to battle catastrophic wildfires consuming entire neighborhoods and taking lives, state and local officials are also fending off President-elect Donald Trump and his allies’ efforts to blame them for the destruction.

Instead of offering words of sympathy or pledges of rebuilding, Trump, his billionaire ally Elon Musk and top Republicans have spent much of the past several days blaming Democratic leadership in the state for the crisis.”

IN CONTRAST – FOX NEWS – A NEWS OUTLET ON THE RIGHT –

FOCUSED ON STATE POLICIES.

“Democratic lawmakers are claiming the severity of the Los Angeles wildfires was a result of climate change, despite reports that the city’s fire hydrants ran out of water and the fire department’s budget was slashed just weeks before the Palisades fire destroyed thousands of homes and burned more than 15,000 acres.

As the fires gained national attention, Democratic lawmakers across the country began to claim it was climate change rather than state policies that caused the disastrous fire damage.

LEFT-LEANING CNN – FOCUSED AGAIN ON TRUMP.

Walls of fire devoured neighborhoods, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee for their lives. But as a cataclysm fueled by windstorms charred swathes of Los Angeles, Donald Trump spotted an opportunity…The conceit of a state and city inflicting self-defeating environmental policies is a perfect fit for Trump’s narrative that liberal governance in blue states and cities invites chaos, crime and misery.

AND THE WASHINGTON EXAMINER – A RIGHT LEANING OUTLET – FOCUSED AGAIN ON CALIFORNIA POLICY.

Critics said state policies about brush and debris removal fed the fires and argued Newsom ignored years of warnings to change course and avoid the latest disaster. Some furious Californians also said Newsom’s water policy left firefighters without the tools they needed to stop the crisis.”

THE NARRATIVE MATCHES THE RHETORIC OFFERED BY NEWSOM AND FLORIDA GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS –

NEWSOM, SAYING TRUMP IS politicizing THE WILDFIRES.

AND DESANTIS – ANSWERING A QUESTION AT A PRESS EVENT – SAYING DEMOCRATIC POLICIES ARE BEING OVERLOOKED BY THE MEDIA.

“I hate to even ask this question, BUT PRESIDENT elect chose to attack and blame you for this.

“One can’t even respond to it…people are literally fleeing, people have lost their lives.

“This guy wanted to poltiicize it. I have a lot of thoughts and i know what i want to say. I wont.”

“Is it appropriate for a president elect or president to be criticizing…”

“Is it appropriate for people in your industry to try to create division and narratives anytime these things happen? No, you’re not interested in doing that because newsom is a D. if newsom was a republican, you guys would nail him to the wall for what they’re doing over there. <3:21- you guys sitting in judgment of donald trump? Excuse me, your track record of politicizing these things is very very bad.”

IN CONCLUSION.

YOU HAVE THE FACTS OF THE STORY –

THAT BOTH LEFT AND RIGHT OUTLETS ARE REPORTING.

FROM A POORLY TIMED TRIP TO GHANA BY THE MAYOR.

FIRE DEPARTMENT BUDGET CUTS AND A LACK OF WATER RESOURCES.

BUT ITS THE BIG PICTURE “BLAME GAME” THAT IS BEING POLITICIZED –

NOT JUST BY REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATIC POLITICIANS –

BUT BY LEFT AND RIGHT NEWS OUTLETS.

RIGHT NEWS OUTLETS CRITICIZING LEFT POLICIES AS THE ROOT OF THE WILDFIRES.

AND NEWS OUTLETS ON THE LEFT CALLING THE CRITICISM “ATTACKS” FROM TRUMP AND ALLIES.

AND THAT’S YOUR BIAS BREAKDOWN.

“As a father of two daughters, I can tell you very clearly that there is no scenario or situation where I would want to see my daughters competing against biological males,” Rep. Riley Moore, R-W.V., said.

“This bill is sloppy, vague and prejudiced,” Rep. Sara Jacobs, D-Calif., said.

The legislation is officially called the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. The bill makes it a violation of Title IX for sports programs to permit a male to participate in an athletic activity that is designated for females. It states sex is recognized solely on the person’s reproductive biology at birth.

“What should be an opportunity for young women to thrive and compete has been clouded by an agenda that prioritized so-called inclusion over fairness,” Rep. Tom Emmer, R-Minn., said.

Democrats oppose the bill for many reasons. One of their biggest concerns is that it does not distinguish programs based on age or competition level.

”They contend it could apply to young girls playing in grade-school leagues the same as it does to NCAA athletes, so long as the program receives federal funding. The bill’s exact language is, “participation with any athletic team.”

“This is interrogation of young girls about their bodies, this is asking people to show them what is underneath their underwear,” Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., said. “It’s vile, it’s twisted, they don’t want to talk about the details. It’s an absolute invasion of children’s privacy.”

The House approved the bill last year but it was never considered in the Senate. It’s unclear if it could get 60 votes in that chamber, even with the new Republican majority.

Nvidia’s Vice President of Government Affairs Ned Finkle called the new rules “misguided” and “sweeping overreach” in a blog post on Monday, Jan. 13.

“In its last days in office the Biden administration seeks to undermine America’s leadership with a 200+ page regulatory morass, drafted in secret and without proper legislative review,” Finkle wrote.

Biden’s policy changes would steer sales to allies, while curbing access to countries where there are national security concerns, like China. That’s another blow to Nvidia, which often sells its products to Chinese companies.

Nvidia’s China revenue has already taken a hit over past restrictions. It dropped from around a quarter of total revenue to 10%-15% in recent years.

Finkle’s blog post goes on to applaud Trump. He said his first administration showed “America wins through innovation, not by retreating behind a wall of government overreach.”

“We look forward to a return to policies that strengthen American leadership, bolster our economy and preserve our competitive edge in AI and beyond,” Finkle said.

The stance is a departure from Nvidia’s approach during the presidential campaign. The company and its CEO Jensen Huang stayed quiet on politics and did not make an endorsement.

This latest policy rule from Biden includes a 120-day comment period, leaving Trump’s incoming administration in charge of seeing it through.

In Trump’s first term, his team did restrict Chinese companies from getting their hands on the best U.S. semiconductor tech.

THE SECOND MOST VALUABLE COMPANY IN THE WORLD IS TAKING AIM AT PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN WHILE AT THE SAME TIME, PRAISING PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP. NVIDIA’S CRITICISM IS IN RESPONSE TO BIDEN’S LAST MINUTE EXPORT CONTROLS ON A-I CHIPS.

NVIDIA’S VICE PRESIDENT OF GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS, NED FINKLE, CALLED THE NEW RULES “MISGUIDED” AND “SWEEPING OVERREACH” IN A BLOG POST MONDAY …

HE WROTE, “IN ITS LAST DAYS IN OFFICE THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION SEEKS TO UNDERMINE AMERICA’S LEADERSHIP WITH A 200 PLUS PAGE REGULATORY MORASS, DRAFTED IN SECRET AND WITHOUT PROPER LEGISLATIVE REVIEW.”

BIDEN’S POLICY CHANGES WOULD STEER SALES TO ALLIES WHILE CURBING ACCESS TO COUNTRIES WHERE THERE ARE NATIONAL SECURITY CONCERNS, LIKE CHINA. THAT’S ANOTHER BLOW TO NVIDIA … WHICH SELLS ITS PRODUCTS TO CHINESE COMPANIES.

NVIDIA’S CHINA REVENUE HAS ALREADY TAKEN A HIT OVER PAST RESTRICTIONS. IT WENT FROM AROUND A QUARTER OF TOTAL REVENUE TO 10-15% IN RECENT YEARS.

FINKLE’S BLOG POST GOES ON TO APPLAUD TRUMP, SAYING HIS FIRST ADMINISTRATION SHOWED “AMERICA WINS THROUGH INNOVATION, NOT BY RETREATING BEHIND A WALL OF GOVERNMENT OVERREACH.”

FINKLE SAYS, “WE LOOK FORWARD TO A RETURN TO POLICIES THAT STRENGTHEN AMERICAN LEADERSHIP, BOLSTER OUR ECONOMY AND PRESERVE OUR COMPETITIVE EDGE IN AI AND BEYOND.”

THE STANCE IS A DEPARTURE FROM NVIDIA’S APPROACH DURING THE PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN. THE COMPANY AND ITS C-E-O JENSEN HUANG STAYED QUIET ON POLITICS AND DID NOT MAKE AN ENDORSEMENT.

THIS LATEST POLICY RULE FROM BIDEN INCLUDES A 120-DAY COMMENT PERIOD, LEAVING TRUMP’S INCOMING ADMINISTRATION IN CHARGE OF SEEING IT THROUGH. BUT ARE THESE TWO THAT FAR APART? Puerto Rico governor calls on Trump over Venezuela’s threat to security

Puerto Rico’s governor is urging swift action from President-elect Donald Trump after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro called for the “liberation” of the U.S. territory. Governor Jenniffer González-Colón described Maduro’s comments as a direct threat to U.S. sovereignty and security.

In a letter to Trump, González emphasized Puerto Rico’s strategic role, highlighting key military installations like Fort Buchanan and Muñiz Air National Guard Base, as well as U.S. Coast Guard and Customs operations that combat regional drug trafficking. She warned that Maduro’s remarks, made during an event in Caracas, could signal broader attempts to undermine U.S. influence in the region.

Maduro, recently sworn in for a disputed third term amid allegations of election fraud, claimed Puerto Rico’s “liberation” would involve Brazilian military support. His remarks come as he faces international condemnation, with the U.S. offering a $25 million reward for his arrest.

The United States and other governments recognize opposition leader Edmundo González as the legitimate winner of Venezuela’s July election.

González noted Puerto Rico’s long-standing rejection of independence, pointing to a 2024 nonbinding referendum where 57 percent of voters supported statehood. Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory since 1898, has held U.S. citizenship since 1917, but residents cannot vote in general elections or elect voting members to Congress. Any change to its status requires congressional approval.

Experts dismissed Maduro’s statements as political rhetoric. Analysts note that Puerto Rico’s electorate has consistently supported closer ties with the U.S., and the likelihood of an invasion is considered implausible. Observers also view Maduro’s comments as an attempt to distract from his domestic challenges and international isolation.

The Biden administration, which remains in office until Jan. 20, has maintained sanctions on Maduro’s regime and supported Venezuela’s opposition. As Trump prepares to take office, questions remain about how his administration will approach U.S. relations with Venezuela and Puerto Rico’s statehood ambitions.

González has called for strong leadership to reaffirm U.S. support for its territories and counter Maduro’s efforts to destabilize the region. Analysts caution that failing to support Venezuela’s opposition could strengthen Maduro’s grip on power.

Second-largest utility in California accused of starting LA fire

California’s second-largest utility is accused of starting the Eaton Fire, one of the devastating Los Angeles fires that have collectively claimed at least 24 lives and displaced tens of thousands. Jeremy Gursey, a Los Angeles resident, filed a lawsuit this week in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging that Southern California Edison’s equipment ignited the blaze, which destroyed his Altadena home. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

Southern California Edison has denied the allegations, stating that its analysis of circuits and transmission lines in the area revealed no operational anomalies in the 12 hours before the fire’s reported start time. The utility added that there were no service interruptions until over an hour after the fire began.

Meanwhile, local officials have yet to determine the cause of the fire. However, officials confirmed they are investigating an electrical transmission tower in Eaton Canyon as a potential origin point.

This lawsuit is one of several filed against Southern California Edison in connection with recent fires. Another suit, stemming from the Palisades Fire, accuses the utility of negligence, claiming it failed to de-energize electrical equipment despite clear warnings.

Southern California Edison has stated it has not yet been served with this lawsuit but will review it upon receipt.

The legal challenges facing the utility echo similar cases, such as the 2019 lawsuit against Pacific Gas & Electric, which ultimately led to that utility filing for bankruptcy.

Attorneys representing fire victims indicate that additional lawsuits against Southern California Edison are likely, as they continue to meet with individuals affected by the fires.

Rebuffing calls to unwind DEI would go against a recent trend seen in tech. Meta announced during the week of Jan. 6 that it was immediately ending DEI efforts, citing the changing legal and policy landscape, and noting the term was “charged.” Later, it came out that Amazon was in the process of rolling back some of its diversity and inclusion programs.

While the changes at Meta and Amazon have come to light since President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory, other companies acted prior. Microsoft laid off its DEI team in summer 2024 due to “changing business needs,” according to an internal memo obtained by Business Insider. Google-parent Alphabet also downsized its DEI staff.

Ahead of Apple’s shareholder meeting in February 2025, Apple told investors the right-leaning National Center for Public Policy Research (NCPPR) is submitting a proposal to end DEI at the world’s largest company.

“It’s clear that DEI poses litigation, reputational and financial risks to companies, and therefore financial risks to their shareholders, and therefore further risks to companies for not abiding by their fiduciary duties,” the supporting statement reads.

The NCPPR cited the recent Supreme Court case SFFA v. Harvard. That was the landmark affirmative action case that ruled race-based admissions violate the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

The NCPPR argued that, should Apple continue its DEI programs, the legal landscape could open the company up to lawsuits that “could reach tens of billions of dollars.” Apple’s market capitalization is valued at around $3.5 trillion.

Apple’s board is recommending investors reject this proposal from the NCPPR.

“The proposal is unnecessary as Apple already has a well-established compliance program,” the board wrote. “The proposal also inappropriately attempts to restrict Apple’s ability to manage its own ordinary business operations, people and teams, and business strategies.”

The board said Apple does not discriminate in hiring or promoting on any basis protected by law, and accused the NCPPR of inappropriately seeking to micromanage the company on legal compliance. Apple shareholders will get to vote on this and other proposals at the annual meeting on Feb. 25.

The company also revealed Monday, Jan. 13, that Rachel Maddow, the network’s most popular host, will temporarily return to the anchor desk five days a week for Trump’s first 100 days in office.

MSNBC was reportedly the second most-watched cable news behind Fox News during the November election but has seen a sharp drop in ratings since then.

Beginning next week, Maddow will be on the anchor desk from Monday through Friday. Current anchor Alex Wagner will be deployed to cover Trump’s policies over his first 100 days.

The shift comes as MSNBC hedges its bets on viewers returning with a heightened interest in Trump as he takes office for a second term, according to the network’s leaders.

Maddow echoed that sentiment, telling USA Today that she believes viewers will want a “frontline perspective” of Trump’s early policies. Maddow and Wagner will return to normal programming after April 30, 2025.

Engels, a city that hosts an airbase for Russian nuclear bombers, has been a frequent target, with emergency crews recently extinguishing a large fire from a previous strike on Jan. 8. Flight restrictions remained in effect in neighboring areas.

Ukraine’s Center for Strategic Communications stated that seven regions in Russia were targeted. The attacks focused on military production facilities, oil and gas infrastructure and storage sites for guided bombs and missiles.

The agency did not specify the number of drones or missiles used. Meanwhile, Russian authorities claimed they intercepted at least 146 drones and several missiles, including U.S.-made ATACMS and U.K.-made Storm Shadow missiles. Some reports suggested Ukraine downed over 200 drones and additional missiles, though these figures remain unverified.

Local media reported explosions in the Bryansk region near the Ukrainian border, attributing the blasts to a chemical plant. In the Tula region, fires were reported at a refinery and a munitions storage facility.

Future US support for Ukraine uncertain

These strikes come as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, raising questions about the future of U.S. support for Ukraine. Ukrainian officials viewed the attacks as a demonstration of their capability to target critical infrastructure deep within Russian territory.

In response, Russia launched a counter-aerial assault on Ukraine, deploying nearly 80 drones overnight. Ukraine’s air force reported shooting down 60 of the drones, though falling debris caused damage to buildings and vehicles in several areas. No casualties were reported.

UKRAINE SAYS IT JUST LAUNCHED THE LARGEST WAVE OF DRONE AND MISSILE ATTACKS TO DATE AGAINST RUSSIA IN THE ALMOST THREE-YEAR-OLD WAR.
IT HAPPENED OVERNIGHT AND TARGETED INDUSTRIAL AND STRATEGIC SITES ACROSS MULTIPLE REGIONS.

THE DAMAGE TO FACILITIES, RESULTING SCHOOL CLOSURES, AND FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS ALL HIGHLIGHT THE ESCALATING CONFLICT AS THE U.S. PREPARES FOR A LEADERSHIP TRANSITION THAT COULD RESHAPE ITS ROLE IN SUPPORTING UKRAINE.

RUSSIAN OFFICIALS REPORTED DAMAGE TO MULTIPLE OIL PRODUCTION AND CHEMICAL FACILITIES AND THE CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS IN THE SOUTHERN CITIES OF SARATOV AND ENGELS.

THE SARATOV REGION’S GOVERNOR, ROMAN BUSARGIN, CONFIRMED A “MASSIVE UAV ATTACK” DAMAGED TWO INDUSTRIAL PLANTS. ENGELS IS HOME TO AN AIRBASE FOR RUSSIAN NUCLEAR BOMBERS — THERE AREA WAS TARGETED BEFORE— EMERGENCY CREWS RECENTLY EXTINGUISHED A LARGE FIRE FROM STRIKE ON JANUARY 8TH. FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS WERE IMPOSED IN THE NEIGHBORING AREAS.

UKRAINE’S CENTER FOR STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS SAYS
SEVEN REGIONS IN RUSSIA WERE TARGETED, INCLUDING MILITARY PRODUCTION FACILITIES, OIL AND GAS INFRASTRUCTURE, AND STORAGE SITES FOR GUIDED BOMBS AND MISSILES. THE AGENCY DID NOT DISCLOSE THE EXACT NUMBER OF DRONES OR MISSILES DEPLOYED. RUSSIAN OFFICIALS CLAIM THEY INTERCEPTED AT LEAST 146 DRONES AND SEVERAL MISSILES, INCLUDING 5 U.S.-MADE ATACMS AND 2 U.K.-MADE STORM SHADOW MISSILES.

IN SOME REPORTS, RUSSIA SAYS IT SHOT DOWN OVER 200 DRONES AND FIVE ATACMS MISSILES. HOWEVER, THERE IS NO INDEPENDENT CONFIRMATION OF THESE FIGURES, AND UKRAINE DID NOT PROVIDE A TOTAL COUNT.

THE BRYANSK REGION, NEAR UKRAINE’S BORDER, SAW EXPLOSIONS, REPORTEDLY AT A CHEMICAL PLANT. LOCAL MEDIA IN TULA REPORT FIRES AT A REFINERY AND A MUNITIONS STORAGE FACILITY.

THE STRIKES COME AS PRESIDENT-ELECT DONALD TRUMP PREPARES TO TAKE OFFICE, WITH QUESTIONS SURROUNDING THE FUTURE OF U.S. SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE. UKRAINIAN OFFICIALS SEE THE STRIKES AS A DEMONSTRATION OF THEIR ABILITY TO TARGET CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE WITHIN RUSSIA.

AT THE SAME TIME, RUSSIA CONDUCTED A COUNTER-AERIAL ASSAULT ON UKRAINE, DEPLOYING NEARLY 80 DRONES OVERNIGHT. UKRAINE’S AIR FORCE REPORTED SHOOTING DOWN 60 BUT NOTED DEBRIS CAUSED DAMAGE TO BUILDINGS AND VEHICLES IN SEVERAL AREAS. NO CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED.

China floats Elon Musk as possible future owner of US TikTok: Report

Chinese officials are weighing options for TikTok as the popular short-form video app faces an outright ban in the U.S. on Jan. 19. One possible option they are discussing is selling its U.S. operations to X owner Elon Musk, according to a report from Bloomberg

The Chinese government would “strongly” prefer TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, remain the app’s owner, according to Bloomberg sources. But they have discussed Musk’s X taking over TikTok’s U.S. arm as a possible contingency.

Bloomberg said it is unclear whether Musk, X, TikTok or ByteDance are involved in these discussions with Chinese government officials.

Despite his ownership of a rival social media platform, Musk has adamantly maintained that TikTok shouldn’t be banned.

“In my opinion, TikTok should not be banned in the USA, even though such a ban may benefit the X platform,” Musk posted in April. “Doing so would be contrary to freedom of speech and expression. It is not what America stands for.”

Musk has had positive dealings with the Chinese government as part of his role as CEO of Tesla.

Recently, President-elect Donald Trump said TikTok has a “warm spot” in his heart, despite being the first president to propose banning the app on national security concerns during his first administration.

“We’ll take a look at TikTok,” he said in December. “I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok because I won youth by 34 points. And there are those that say that TikTok has something to do with it.”

Based on a Tufts University analysis of Associated Press data, Vice President Kamala Harris won the under-30 vote by four points, though Trump did make major gains in the age group and won under-30 men by 14 points, a group he lost in 2020.

In recent months, ByteDance hoped the situation could be resolved in the courts. Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments over whether the ban should be upheld.

The people cited in Bloomberg’s report said Beijing may get more involved in the negotiations, despite ByteDance’s repeated claims it operates independently from the Chinese government. Chinese officials see it as an opportunity to work with the Trump administration, with promises of tariffs and export controls on the docket.

A day before the Supreme Court heard arguments over TikTok, billionaire and former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt’s group put in a formal bid to take over the app.

The People’s Bid for TikTok also includes investor Kevin O’Leary and has been in the works since May 2024. The value of that offer wasn’t made public but McCourt has said he doesn’t need the highly coveted algorithm as part of the deal, which could significantly decrease the value of U.S. operations.

Chinese officials facing an outright ban of TikTok in the U-S are weighing whether Elon Musk should take over the app. That’s according to a report from Bloomberg.

Bloomberg’s sources say China would “strongly” prefer TikTok remain in the hands of its parent company ByteDance. But with a U.S. ban set to take effect January 19, officials have discussed Musk’s X taking over the platform.

At this time, it’s unclear whether Musk, X, TikTok, or ByteDance are involved in these discussions with these Chinese government officials.

That said, Musk has had positive dealings with the Chinese government as Tesla built its Gigafactory Shanghai.

So what has Musk said about TikTok in the past? Even though the world’s richest person owns a rival social media platform, he has maintained TikTok should not be banned in the U.S.

In April, he wrote on X, “In my opinion, TikTok should not be banned in the USA, even though such a ban may benefit the X platform. Doing so would be contrary to freedom of speech and expression. It is not what America stands for.”

President-elect Trump’s first administration started the ball rolling on talks of banning TikTok. But he’s come around on the app since November’s election.

Back to TikTok. ByteDance was hoping the situation would be resolved in the courts. Last week, the Supreme Court heard arguments over whether the ban should be upheld.

Bloomberg’s report says Beijing may get more involved in the negotiations, despite ByteDance’s repeated claims it operates independently from the Chinese government. Chinese officials see it as an opportunity to work with the Trump administration with promises of tariffs and export controls on the docket.

But China and ByteDance have more than one iron in the fire when it comes to keeping TikTok on the screens of American phones.

A day before the Supreme Court heard arguments over TikTok, billionaire and former Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt’s group put in a formal bid to take over the app

[FRANK MCCOURT | FOUNDER, PROJECT LIBERTY]

“The key to unlock this deal is to buy U.S. TikTok without the algorithm. I think it’s clear that ByteDance is not going to sell with the algorithm.

“We spent 5 years building a clean, made-in-America tech stack where we can onboard the 170 million users without the algorithm and without any China IP.

While the value of the so-called “People’s Bid for TikTok” wasn’t made public, we do know that a shark is involved.

[KEVIN O’LEARY]

It’s what we want to do to save the platform for Americans, I think it’s the right thing to do, and the company should want that too. This is the only path I see forward. And so let’s see what happens. It’s going to be a very interesting week.
