News headlines compared: Did Trump win by a landslide?

Listen
Share

The size of Donald Trump’s election victory has sparked debate. Was it a landslide? The answer depends on where a person looks for their news outlet.

News outlets with a left-leaning bias, such as The New York Times, referred to Trump’s victory as “the ‘landslide’ that wasn’t.” MSNBC noted Trump “won every battleground state and the popular vote but not by a landslide.”

Meanwhile, right-leaning outlets like National Review reported “Landslide or not, Trump won a mandate.” Breitbart reported, “Trump’s landslide victory moved 48 states to the right.”

It’s been more than two weeks since election night, but the size of Trump’s victory continues to make headlines, especially as several counties, including many in California, have been slow to report results.

The updated vote tally over the past two weeks has narrowed Trump’s lead over his opponent Kamala Harris. However, he remains the winner of the popular vote, becoming the first Republican to do so in 20 years.

Here’s how news outlets are covering the updated numbers that have trickled in since the election.

Left-leaning publications

“By traditional numeric measures, Mr. Trump’s victory was neither unprecedented nor a landslide” The New York Times reported. “In fact, he prevailed with one of the smallest margins of victory in the popular vote since the 19th century and generated little of the coattails of a true landslide.”

The Times focused on Trump hovering around the 50%, with 99% of votes counted. However, some counties are still tallying results.

As of Friday, Nov. 22, Trump had received 50% of the vote compared to Harris’ 48.3%, a 1.7% margin of victory, according the Times election results tally.

The Times also compared Trump’s victory to what they referred to as real landslides, citing Lyndon B. Johnson’s 1964 win by 22.6 points, Richard Nixon’s 1972 win by 23.2 points, and Ronald Reagan’s 1984 win by 18.2 points.

The paper noted in the 40 years since Reagan’s victory, no president has won the popular vote by double digits.

The Times offered an explanation as to why the 2024 election is being classified as a landslide by the right.

“The incoming president and his team are trying to cement the impression of a ‘resounding margin,’ as one aide called it, to make Mr. Trump seem more popular than he is and strengthen his hand in forcing through his agenda in the months to come,” The Times wrote.

Right-leaning publications

On the other side of the political spectrum, the right-leaning National Review offered a different perspective.

“At 76.7 million votes and counting, Trump has now won the second most votes of any presidential candidate in history,” its story said.

The National Review also pointed out Trump won all seven key swing states and six states he lost four years ago.

“If a state was considered in play, Trump won it. If you want to dispute that Trump won a mandate on Election Day, you have to accept that Democrats earned an anti-mandate, a rebuke,” the publication wrote.

Some categories in the 2024 election were unprecedented. Trump garnered more support from Hispanic voters than any other Republican candidate in history, according to an Axios exit poll. Trump also became the first president to be twice-impeached and convicted of a felony to win re-election. He is set to take office again in January 2025.

THE SIZE OF TRUMP’S ELECTION VICTORY.

WAS IT A LANDSLIDE? OR A “MANDATE”?

THE ANSWER – DIFFERS DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU GET YOUR NEWS.

NEWS OUTLETS WITH A LEFT-LEANING BIAS –

LIKE THE NEW YORK TIMES – “THE ‘LANDSLIDE’ THAT WASN’T.”

AND MSNBC – “TRUMP WON EVERY BATTLEGROUND STATE AND POPULAR VOTE – BUT **NOT BY A LANDSLIDE.

RIGHT-LEANING OUTLETS –  LIKE THE NATIONAL REVIEW – “LANDSLIDE OR NOT, TRUMP WON A MANDATE”

AND BREITBART “TRUMP’S LANDSLIDE VICTORY MOVED 48 STATES TO THE RIGHT.”

IT’S BEEN OVER TWO WEEKS SINCE ELECTION NIGHT –

BUT THE SIZE OF TRUMP’S VICTORY – IS MAKING HEADLINES –

AS DOZENS OF COUNTIES – MANY FROM CALIFORNIA – HAVE BEEN SLUGGISH TO REPORT RESULTS.

THE UPDATED VOTE TALLY OVER THE PAST TWO WEEKS –

HAS SHRUNK TRUMP’S EDGE OVER HARRIS –

BUT HE REMAINS THE WINNER OF THE POPULAR VOTE – THE FIRST REPUBLICAN TO DO SO IN 20 YEARS.

HERE’S HOW NEWS OUTLETS ARE REPORTING ON THE UPDATED NUMBERS THAT HAVE TRICKLED IN IN THE TWO WEEKS SINCE THE ELECTION.

THE NEW YORK TIMES WROTE – “by traditional numeric measures, Mr. Trump’s victory was neither unprecedented nor a landslide. In fact, he prevailed with one of the smallest margins of victory in the popular vote since the 19th century and generated little of the coattails of a true landslide.

IN THE TIMES PIECE – THEY HONE IN ON TRUMP HOVERING AROUND THE 50% MARK – OR THE MAJORITY OF VOTES CAST.

WHILE 99 PERCENT OF VOTES ARE IN – SOME COUNTIES ARE STILL COUNTING.

AS OF FRIDAY AFTERNOON – TRUMP RECEIVED 50% OF THE VOTE COMPARED TO HARRIS’ 48.3 PERCENT OF THE VOTE ACCORDING TO THE NEW YORK TIMES TALLY.

THAT’S A 1.7 PERCENT MARGIN OF VICTORY.

THE TIMES WROTE –

Real landslides have been unmistakable, including Lyndon B. Johnson’s in 1964 by 22.6 points, Richard M. Nixon’s in 1972 by 23.2 points and Ronald Reagan’s in 1984 by 18.2 points. In the 40 years since that Reagan victory, no president has won the popular vote by double digits.

THE TIMES ALSO OFFERED THIS EXPLANATION AS TO WHY THE 2024 ELECTION IS BEING CLASSIFIED AS A LANDSLIDE BY THE RIGHT.

SAYING “The incoming president and his team are trying to cement the impression of a “resounding margin,” as one aide called it, to make Mr. Trump seem more popular than he is and strengthen his hand in forcing through his agenda in the months to come.”

ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MEDIA POLITICAL AISLE –

RIGHT-LEANING NEWS OUTLET “THE NATIONAL REVIEW” –

HAS A DIFFERENT TAKE –

CITING OTHER ELECTION NIGHT STATS –

IN RESPONSE TO THE NEW YORK TIMES PIECE.

THEY WRITE “The New York Times is concerned that Donald Trump and certain Republicans are boasting that the 2024 election was a landslide.

At 76.7 million votes and counting, Trump has now won the second most votes of any presidential candidate in history.

What makes this election feel like a landslide is the fact that Trump won all seven key swing states and won six states that he lost four years ago. If a state was considered in play, Trump won it. If you want to dispute that Trump won a mandate on Election Day, you have to accept that Democrats earned an anti-mandate, a rebuke.

IN SOME CATEGORIES –

2024 WAS AN UNPRECEDENTED ELECTION.

SUCH AS TRUMP GARNERING MORE SUPPORT FROM HISPANIC VOTERS THAN ANY OTHER REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE IN HISTORY ACCORDING TO AN AXIOS EXIT POLL.

World’s first carbon capture facility powered by wind energy coming to Texas

Listen
Share

The world’s first direct air capture (DAC) facility powered by wind energy is set to be built in Tom Green County, Texas. After 2030, the facility, dubbed Project Concho, is projected to remove 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually. That is the equivalent of taking 116,628 gas-powered vehicles off the road for a year, according to the developers.

Unlike traditional carbon capture systems that trap emissions directly at their source, DAC technology can be deployed anywhere and pull carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. However, because carbon dioxide is more diluted in ambient air compared to emission sources, these systems require significantly more energy to capture those greenhouse gases.

Studies estimate that DAC operations can consume two to three times more energy than conventional carbon capture methods, raising concerns about their environmental efficiency when creating emissions in the process of removing them.

In an effort to ensure a cleaner and more sustainable approach to reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide, Project Concho will run on wind energy.

A WORLD-FIRST IS COMING TO THE LONE STAR STATE.

A CARBON CAPTURE FACILITY – POWERED BY WIND ENERGY.

THAT’S THE CLAIM BEING MADE BY DEVELOPERS OF PROJECT CONCHO-

A DIRECT AIR CAPTURE PLANT SET TO BE BUILT IN TOM GREEN COUNTY, TEXAS.

THE COMPANIES BEHIND THIS ENDEAVOR SAY THAT AFTER 20-30-

THE FACILITY AIMS TO HELP REMOVE 500,000 TONS OF CARBON DIOXIDE ANNUALLY.

AN EMISSIONS EQUIVALENT OF TAKING  OVER 110,000 GAS-POWERED CARS OFF THE ROAD FOR A YEAR.

MOST CARBON CAPTURE TECH DRAWS THE EMISSIONS AT THEIR SOURCE –
BUT THAT ISN’T A REQUIREMENT FOR DIRECT AIR CAPTURE TECHNOLOGY-

WHICH CAN BE DEPLOYED ANYWHERE AND PULL CARBON DIRECTLY FROM THE ATMOSPHERE.

HOWEVER, BECAUSE THE AIR’S CO2 CONCENTRATION IS MUCH MORE DILUTED WHEN NOT DIRECTLY AT THE SITE WHERE EMISSIONS ARE BEING GENERATED –

DIRECT AIR CAPTURE FACILITIES REQUIRE GREATER AMOUNTS OF POWER THAN WHAT’S TYPICALLY NEEDED BY THIS TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY.

SOME STUDIES ESTIMATE IT CAN BE 2 TO 3 TIMES MORE ENERGY INTENSIVE THAN CONVENTIONAL CARBON CAPTURE METHODS.

HIGHER ELECTRIC USE MEANS MORE EMISSIONS ARE CREATED BY TECH THAT IS INTENDED TO REMOVE THOSE GREENHOUSE GASSES.

SO, THAT’S WHY RENEWABLE WIND ENERGY IS BEING USED TO POWER THIS TEXAS-BASED DIRECT AIR CAPTURE PLANT.

MAKING IT AN EVEN CLEANER WAY TO IMPROVE THE NATION’S AIR QUALITY.

BBC News reports a paramedic who examined the woman the next day testified that her injuries were some of the worst bruising she had ever seen.

Jury deliberation and McGregor’s response

According to The Associated Press, the jury deliberated for six hours and McGregor shook his head in court as they read their verdict. The fighter denied all allegations, insisting their encounter was consensual. He argued the woman fabricated her claims.

In a statement outside the courthouse, the woman thanked her loved ones for their support. She emphasized the importance of standing up for oneself, saying she wanted to set an example for her daughter.

McGregor to appeal

Shortly after the verdict, McGregor said in a social media post on X he intends to appeal.

Political ambitions

The verdict comes just months after McGregor announced his intention to run for president of Ireland in the 2025 election.

The case continues to draw public attention, as McGregor maintains his innocence and prepares to challenge the decision.

“Do you have any reaction or apology to the woman at the center of this?”

[KENNEDY FELTON]

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS FIGHTER CONOR MCGREGOR HAS BEEN ORDERED TO PAY A WOMAN NEARLY 250-THOUSAND EUROS – OR ABOUT 257-THOUSAND U-S DOLLARS.

THIS FOLLOWS A CIVIL COURT JURY IN DUBLIN, IRELAND FINDING HIM LIABLE FOR ASSAULTING HER IN A HOTEL ROOM BACK IN DECEMBER OF 20-18.

THE WOMAN – WHO REMAINED ANONYMOUS… CLAIMED MCGREGOR RAPED AND BATTERED HER AFTER a night of partying… LEAVING HER WITH SEVERE BRUISING AND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER.

A PARAMEDIC WHO EXAMINED THE WOMAN THE NEXT DAY TESTIFIED SHE HAD NEVER SEEN BRUISING AS INTENSE AS WHAT THE WOMAN HAD.

ACCORDING TO A-P NEWS – AFTER ABOUT SIX HOURS OF DELIBERATION…. THE JURY READ THEIR VERDICT WHILE MCGREGOR SAT AND SHOOK HIS HEAD.

IN HIS TESTIMONY… HE *INSISTED THEIR ENCOUNTER WAS CONSENSUAL… AND THAT THE WOMAN FABRICATED THE STORY AFTER THEY HAD SEX.

IN A STATEMENT OUTSIDE THE COURTHOUSE FRIDAY… THE WOMAN THANKED HER FAMILY, FRIENDS AND PARTNER… BUT ESPECIALLY, HER DAUGHTER.

[WOMAN INVOLVED IN CASE]

“She has given me so much strength and courage over the last 6 years throughout this nightmare to keep on pushing forward for justice.”

SHE also EMPHASIZED THE IMPORTANCE OF STANDING UP FOR ONESELF IN DIFFICULT SITUATIONS… ESPECIALLY WHEN SOMETHING HARMFUL HAPPENS.

IN ADDITION TO THE LEGAL CASE… MCGREGOR MADE HEADLINES IN SEPTEMBER WHEN HE ANNOUNCED HIS INTENTION TO RUN FOR PRESIDENT OF IRELAND IN 20-25… FURTHER EXPANDING HIS PUBLIC PROFILE.

IN A SOCIAL MEDIA POST FOLLOWING THE VERDICT… MCGREGOR said – I will be appealing today’s decision. The judge’s instruction and the modest award given was for assault, not for aggravated or exemplary damages. I am disappointed that the jury did not hear all the evidence that the [Director of Public Prosecutions] reviewed.”

The research started after doctors noticed people with cancer, who got very sick with COVID-19 during the pandemic, saw their tumors shrink or grow at a slower rate.

The study revealed the same cells activated by severe cases of the virus could be induced with a drug to attack cancer cells. Researchers specifically saw a response with melanoma, lung, breast and colon cancer.

While there were some anecdotal stories from doctors during the pandemic, the researchers only used human blood and tissues and mice. No actual patients with cancer were a part of the study.

However, the results led to different headlines from multiple news outlets ranging from “Covid might cure cancer. No, you didn’t read that wrong,” to “Can COVID-19 help the body fight cancer? Shocking new study links viruses to shrinking tumors.”

The headlines had some doctors reacting on social media, including Dr. Ali Khan who served at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more than 20 years.

“Clickbait,” Khan commented on X. “Nope – Not a single person involved in the study. Some blood and human tissue samples and mice. Stay tuned 20 years.”

The study also has some people questioning the COVID-19 vaccine.

“If the COVID-19 natural infection can mitigate cancer, could the COVID-19 immunization have the opposite effect?” another person said on X.

While the study didn’t include data on the vaccine, the researchers say the link between the COVID-19 virus and cancer is promising.

They also emphasized more work is needed before this approach can actually be used on patients. They said next steps will involve clinical trials to see if they can safely and effectively implement their findings on people.

A NEW STUDY ON THE EFFECTS THAT COVID-19 COULD POTENTIALLY HAVE ON CANCER TUMORS IS CAUSING A LOT OF BUZZ ONLINE.

NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS FOUND THAT THE VIRUS TRIGGERS IMMUNE CHANGES THAT ONE DAY MAY BE ABLE TO FIGHT CANCER.

THE RESEARCH STARTED AFTER DOCTORS NOTICED PEOPLE WITH CANCER WHO GOT VERY SICK WITH COVID-19 DURING THE PANDEMIC SAW THEIR TUMORS SHRINK OR GROW AT A SLOWER RATE.

WHILE THERE WERE SOME ANECDOTAL STORIES FROM DOCTORS DURING THE PANDEMIC … THE RESEARCHERS ONLY USED HUMAN BLOOD AND TISSUES AND MICE – NO ACTUAL PATIENTS WITH CANCER WERE A PART OF THE STUDY.

HOWEVER, THE RESULTS LED TO DIFFERENT HEADLINES FROM MULTIPLE NEWS OUTLETS RANGING FROM “COVID COULD CURE CANCER – SCIENTISTS DISCOVER” TO “CAN COVID-19 HELP THE BODY FIGHT CANCER? SHOCKING NEW STUDY LINKS VIRUSES TO SHRINKING TUMORS.”

THE HEADLINES HAVE SOME DOCTORS REACTING ON SOCIAL MEDIA … INCLUDING DOCTOR ALI KHAN WHO SERVED AT THE C-D-C FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS …

HE COMMENTED ON X … “CLICKBAIT – NOPE. NOT A SINGLE PERSON INVOLVED IN THE STUDY. SOME BLOOD AND HUMAN TISSUE SAMPLES AND MICE. STAY TUNED 20 YEARS.”

THE STUDY ALSO NOW HAS SOME PEOPLE QUESTIONING THE COVID-19 VACCINE … WITH ONE PERSON ON X SAYING “IF THE COVID-19 NATURAL INFECTION CAN MITIGATE CANCER, COULD THE COVID-19 IMMUNIZATION HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT?”

WHILE THE STUDY DIDN’T INCLUDE DATA ON THE VACCINE… THE RESEARCHERS SAY THE LINK BETWEEN THE COVID-19 VIRUS AND CANCER IS PROMISING … THEY ALSO EMPHASIZE MORE WORK IS NEEDED BEFORE THIS APPROACH CAN ACTUALLY BE USED ON PATIENTS.

THEY SAY NEXT STEPS WILL INVOLVE CLINICAL TRIALS TO SEE IF THEY CAN SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY IMPLEMENT THEIR FINDINGS ON PEOPLE.

Researchers hope PigeonBot flying robot can inspire next generation of flight

Listen

A marriage of technology and biology could be the key to advances in autonomous flight. Researchers revealed in findings published on Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Science Robotics that they have developed the “PigeonBot II.”

The bird-like robot features an adaptive tail and wings capable of adjusting to wind conditions at a moment’s notice, just like its living counterpart.

Physicists believe that this technology could be the key to rudderless flight for unmanned aircraft, and fix stability issues long associated with planes by turbulence.

Tests conducted by the team of researchers reveal the bio-bot is capable of adjusting its tail and wings to any gust or powerful wind it encounters. The design of the aerial robot is exactly like it sounds, inspired by the pigeon, and it’s actually adorned with dozens of real pigeon feathers.

The skeleton of the machine is flexible, and its tail and wings can move like a bird. The robot runs with the help of a reflexive built in system, which uses nine motors with controls to mimic a pigeon in flight.

Researchers say the choice of a pigeon may seem like an odd choice when much faster bird designs are available, but they maintain pigeons are one of the more adaptable birds when it comes to flight maneuvers.

Researchers hope the PigeonBot II will lead to more reliable and stable flying robots.

The technology could even be adapted for military purposes, researchers say the bird-bots have a smaller radar signature than most aircraft and better performance.

Beijing is already reportedly on board with bird-like robots, revealing it’s testing the technology for spying with its military earlier this year. Other U.S. companies are also reportedly experimenting with the concept of bird robots.

A MARRIAGE OF TECHNOLOGY AND BIOLOGY COULD BE THE KEY TO ADVANCES IN

AUTONOMOUS FLIGHT.

RESEARCHERS HAVE DEVELOPED THE SO-CALLED PIGEON-BOT-TWO.

THE BIRD-LIKE ROBOT FEATURES AN ADAPTIVE TAIL AND WINGS CAPABLE OF ADJUSTING TO WIND CONDITIONS AT A MOMENT’S NOTICE– JUST LIKE THE WINGED-FRIENDS YOU SEE EVERYDAY.

PHYSICISTS BELIEVE IT COULD BE THE KEY TO RUDDERLESS FLIGHT FOR UNMANNED AIRCRAFT AND FIX STABILITY ISSUES LONG-ASSOCIATED WITH PLANES HIT BY TURBULENCE.

TESTS REVEAL THE BIO-BOT IS CAPABLE OF ADJUSTING ITS TAIL AND WINGS TO ANY GUST OR POWERFUL WIND IT ENCOUNTERS.

THE DESIGN OF THE AERIAL ROBOT IS EXACTLY LIKE IT SOUNDS– INSPIRED BY THE PIGEON– IT’S ACTUALLY ADORNED WITH DOZENS OF REAL PIGEONS FEATHERS.

THE SKELETON OF THE MACHINE IS FLEXIBILE AND ITS TAIL AND WINGS CAN MOVE LIKE A BIRD.

THE ROBOT RUNS WITH THE HELP OF A REFLEXIVE BUILT IN SYSTEM, WHICH USES NINE MOTORS WITH CONTROLS TO MIMIC A PIGEON IN FLIGHT.

RESEARCHERS SAY THEY HOPE THE PIGEON-BOT-TWO WILL LEAD TO MORE RELIABLE AND STABLE FLYING ROBOTS.

IF THE TECHNOLOGY IS EVENTUALLY ADOPTED BY CERTAIN GOVERNMENT AGENCIES– RESEARCHERS SAY THE BIRD-BOTS HAVE A SMALLER RADAR SIGNATURE THAN MOST AIRCRAFT AND BETTER PERFORMANCE.

BEIJING IS ALREADY REPORTEDLY ON BOARD WITH THAT USE OF BIRD-LIKE ROBOTS.

TESTING THE TECHNOLOGY FOR SPYING WITH ITS MILITARY.

OTHER U-S COMPANIES ARE ALSO REPORTEDLY EXPERIMENTING WITH THE CONCEPT.

Republicans feel good about the economy now that Trump has won

For the first time in four years, Republicans are feeling good about the economy. Economically speaking, only one thing has changed.

There’s a distinct difference in reports of consumer confidence along political lines since President-elect Donald Trump was declared the winner of the presidential election.

The latest consumer sentiment survey from the University of Michigan out Friday, Nov. 22, shows Republicans are feeling pretty peachy about economic expectations moving forward while sentiments from Democrats took a dive. It’s a mirror image of what happened after the 2020 election when President Joe Biden beat out President Donald Trump.

The latest data point confirms other sentiment surveys since Trump was declared the winner on Nov. 6.

In a Morning Consult survey, which shows five-day moving averages, there’s been an immediate shift in political lines since Trump won. As soon as Trump won, Republicans moved from negative into positive territory regarding the economy. However, Democrats slid from more positive to closer to the negative threshold.

Consumer sentiment has historically been a key indicator of the health of the economy. Consumer spending makes up two-thirds of the country’s economic growth, and people spend money when they’re feeling good about economic conditions, so businesses look at consumer sentiment to see how fast the wheels are turning.

In recent years, though, this measure has gotten increasingly political, as this election shows. That may make it a less reliable look at true economic conditions.

Overall, consumer sentiment measured by the University of Michigan is up slightly in November and up 17% over the past year, but sentiment is still far from its pre-pandemic levels. Expectations for the economy are up more than 35% in the past year, likely driven at least in part by lowering inflation

Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., is blocking the promotion of a general who oversaw the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. According to The Hill, Lt. General Christopher Donahue was one of nearly 1,000 promotions the Senate Armed Services Committee approved Tuesday, Nov. 19, but when the full chamber voted Thursday, his name was not on the list.

Lt. Gen. Donahue was nominated by President Biden to be the head of the U.S. Army in Europe. Sources told the outlet Mullin objected to his nomination due to his role in Afghanistan.

Mullin’s office declined to comment.

“Lt. Gen. Donahue is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and has served his country for more than thirty years,” Pentagon spokesman James Adams told The Hill in a statement. “His appointment comes at an extremely critical time in the European region. We urge the Senate to confirm all of our highly qualified nominees. Holds on our nominees undermine our military readiness.”

Donahue is known as the last man out of Afghanistan. At the time, he was commanding officer of the 82nd Airborne division, which was in charge of securing Hamid Karzai International Airport while the military evacuated Americans and Afghans after the Taliban took over.

The Afghanistan withdrawal has been sharply criticized due to the casualties and the $7 billion in military equipment that was left behind. Thirteen service members died in addition to 170 Afghan civilians after a suicide bomber detonated a device at the airport’s gate.

NBC News reported the Trump transition team is compiling a list of officers who could be court-martialed for their involvement. To date, no one has been formally punished for their role in the withdrawal.

Bitcoin closes in on $100K amid Trump’s vow to support crypto industry

Bitcoin is setting the stage for its biggest milestone to date. The world’s most popular cryptocurrency is poised to cross $100,000 very soon as it continues to benefit from the election of Donald Trump

Bitcoin has doubled in price since the start of the year. But it’s the 45% surge in the two weeks since the presidential election that made Bitcoin a major pillar of the “Trump trade.” The president-elect embracing the cryptocurrency industry has investors very bullish on the nascent asset class.

Over the summer, Trump gave the keynote address at the Bitcoin2024 conference and promised to fire U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler on his first day. In anticipation of the move, Gensler announced Thursday, Nov. 21, he would resign from the position on Jan. 20, 2025, as Trump is being sworn in to office.

Gensler could have stayed with the agency as a commissioner through his term ending in 2026. But leaving the position opens the door for the future president to install someone who has a more favorable view of cryptocurrency.

The SEC under Gensler launched a legal fight to block Bitcoin ETFs. It lost its fight and has since approved a number of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products, where billions of dollars have flowed. The SEC also took on companies that sold and held crypto during his time in the chair.

Gensler’s resignation announcement further cemented Bitcoin’s rally. He’s often faced criticism from crypto supporters because their favorite asset was a target of his.

“I will appoint a new SEC chairman who believes America should build the future, not block the future, which is what they’re doing,” Trump said during his address to Bitcoin2024 in July.

Since winning the election, Trump has announced picks to run agencies at a record pace. But he’s been relatively quiet about who will run the SEC

Trump could make good on the promise of a crypto-friendly chair. CoinDesk reports he’s considering crypto lawyer Teresa Goody Guillen, formerly of the SEC and co-lead of law firm BakerHostetler’s blockchain practice.

“Upon taking office, I will immediately appoint a Bitcoin and crypto presidential advisory council,” Trump said in July.

There is a lot of interest in joining that council. Reuters reports high-profile crypto companies, including Ripple, Kraken and Circle, are all pushing for seats on the council.

Trump recently met with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. It’s unclear what they discussed, but a source told Reuters he is interested in joining the council. Reuters reported the Trump transition team has also been getting advice from former CFTC Chair Heath Tarbert, now with Circle, and former CFTC commissioner Brian Quintenz, now with a16z crypto.

It’s expected the council will be part of the White House Economic Council, although there aren’t concrete details at this time.

“Their task will be to design transparent regulatory guidance for the benefit of the entire industry, and they will get it done in 100 days,” Trump said in July. “We will have regulations, but from now on, the rules will be written by people who love your industry, not hate your industry, people that want to make it clear and simple, straightforward and fair, people that want to see your industry thrive, not dive.”

The Bitcoin boom received some more air last week when Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Neel Kashkari told CoinDesk he’ll “keep an open mind” on cryptocurrency. Kashkari’s comments were a breath of fresh air to people in the industry. Over the years, he downplayed crypto, calling it “worthless,” fraudulent,” and “nonsense.”

While it looks like Bitcoin will easily surpass $100,000 in the coming days, prediction markets are betting on where it will land before the end of November.

On Polymarket, 46% of bettors see Bitcoin topping $105,000 by the end of the month. At 23%, a more optimistic group thinks it will hit $110,000 and 9% are betting it will go to $120,000.

Simone Del Rosario:

Bitcoin is inching closer and closer to a major milestone on Friday. The benchmark cryptocurrency appears poised to cross $100,000 at any moment.

Bitcoin has just been on a tear, doubling in value since the start of the year. But it’s the 40% surge in the two weeks since Donald Trump was elected that made Bitcoin a key pillar of the so-called “Trump Trade.”

Trump’s approach to crypto will be unlike anything we’ve seen from the federal government, and investors are “going to the moon” over it.

Over the summer, Trump positioned himself as the first-ever presidential candidate to embrace the crypto industry and call out government officials who stood in the way of broader adoption.

Donald Trump:

On day one I will fire Gary Gensler and hire a new SEC chairman….

Simone Del Rosario:

President Donald Trump won’t get the pleasure of using his favorite catchphrase.

Donald Trump:

“You’re fired.”

Simone Del Rosario:

Instead, the SEC chair announced Thursday he would resign from his position effective noon Eastern time on January 20 as President Trump is being sworn in.

Gensler could technically stay with the agency until 2026. But vacating the position opens the door for Trump to install a favorable pick in the role. Gensler was often a target of crypto evangelists, and frankly, their favorite asset was a target of his.

The SEC under Gensler launched a legal fight to block Bitcoin ETFs. It lost that fight and billions have flowed into funds since the gates opened in January. The SEC also took on companies that sold and held crypto during his time in the chair.

Donald Trump:

I will appoint a new SEC chairman who believes America should build the future, not block the future, which is what they’re doing.

Simone Del Rosario:

Since becoming president-elect, Trump has announced picks to run agencies at a record pace. But he’s been relatively quiet on the SEC front.

According to Coindesk, he could make good on the promise of a crypto-friendly chair. The crypto publication says he is considering crypto lawyer Teresa Goody Guillen, formerly of the SEC and co-lead of law firm BakerHostetler’s blockchain practice.

But wait, there’s more.

Donald Trump:

Upon taking office, I will immediately appoint a Bitcoin and crypto Presidential Advisory Council. Would anybody like to be on that particular Council? Please raise your hand?

Simone Del Rosario:

And there are a lot of hands in the air. Reuters reports high-profile crypto companies including Ripple, Kraken and Circle are all pushing for seats on the council.

Trump recently met with Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. We don’t know all that was discussed but a source told Reuters he is interested in joining the council.

Meanwhile, Reuters says Trump’s transition team has been getting advice from former CFTC Chair Heath Tarbert, now with Circle, and former CFTC commissioner Brian Quintenz, now with a16z crypto.

Trump’s team hasn’t finalized details about this brand new council but he made huge promises at Bitcoin2024 over the summer.

Donald Trump:

Their task will be to design transparent regulatory guidance for the benefit of the entire industry, and they will get it done in 100 days. We will have regulations, but from now on, the rules will be written by people who love your industry, not hate your industry, people that want to make it clear and simple, straightforward and fair, people that want to see your industry thrive, not dive

Simone Del Rosario:

The Bitcoin boom also got some air last week when Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari told Coindesk he’ll “have an open mind” on crypto. That’s after spending years downplaying the industry, calling crypto “worthless,” fraudulent” and “nonsense.”

While it appears Bitcoin will easily surpass $100 grand, maybe even today, crypto-based prediction market betters are getting in on the action.

On Polymarket 46% of bettors see Bitcoin topping out at $105,000 by the end of November. 23% think it will hit $110,000. 9% are betting it will hit $120,000. Only a total of 5% see it driving up any more than that this month.

But down the road, the biggest enthusiasts see a 7-figure Bitcoin. What do you think? Could Bitcoin hit a million dollars or more? For SAN, I’m SDR.

Rich nations urged to pay more as UN climate relief fund falls billions short

A climate relief fund finalized at the UN’s annual COP29 climate conference is falling billions short of what experts say is needed. This discrepancy prompted appeals from developing nations for wealthier countries to increase their financial commitments.

“All countries that have pledged money must complete their contribution agreements,” COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev said. “And we need more pledges so we can meet the urgent needs of climate change victims.”

The “Loss and Damage” fund, designed to provide financial assistance to nations most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The fund was a focal point of discussions at this year’s summit in Azerbaijan.

Analysts estimate that the fund requires at least $100 billion annually to address immediate global needs. They said that figure could rise to $250 billion by 2030 as worldwide climate-related impacts potentially intensify.

However, countries have only pledged $720 million so far, a fraction of the total experts believe is necessary. As a result of this shortfall, several smaller nations are calling on wealthier countries to shoulder a larger share of the responsibility.

“The creation of the Loss and Damage Fund is a victory for developing countries, for multilateralism, and for justice,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said. “But its initial capitalization of $700 million doesn’t come close to righting the wrong inflicted on the vulnerable.”

Many of those nations are already grappling with rising sea levels, extreme weather and other exacerbated natural disasters.

Disadvantaged nations warn that if this doesn’t happen, their people could become climate refugees. That could create a humanitarian crisis that will have global implications.

“If they do nothing, they will be the worst for it,” Bahamian Prime Minister Phillip Davis said. “When my islands are swallowed up by the sea, then what do my people do? They’ll either become climate refugees or they’ll be doomed to a watery grave.”

Officials are still working on specific guidelines for the allocation of these funds. Those funds are housed at the World Bank.

The United Nations officials are working to establish criteria for which countries will receive aid and what types of damages will be covered.

The Texas Education Board voted Friday, Nov. 22, to approve the inclusion of Bible-based lessons in public elementary schools, aligning with similar efforts in other Republican-led states to introduce more religious content into public education. The curriculum, which is optional for schools to adopt, includes a financial incentive, $60 per student, for schools that choose to implement the Bible-based lessons.

Created by the Texas Education Agency, the new classroom material features lessons centered on Christian teachings, such as stories from the Book of Genesis and moral principles like the golden rule.

Supporters argued that incorporating the Bible into education enriches students’ understanding of American history and culture.

Opponents contended that the curriculum could alienate students from diverse religious backgrounds and possibly violate the First Amendment’s separation of church and state. Earlier this week, more than 100 people testified at a board meeting, expressing their support and opposition to the proposed Bible lessons.

With the curriculum now approved by the Texas Education Board, Texas will become the first state to implement Bible lessons in public schools in this manner, according to The Associated Press.

However, the curriculum may face legal challenges from opponents. In Oklahoma, state officials made a similar push to incorporate Bible lessons, but a lawsuit has led the state Supreme Court to become involved.

In Louisiana, a law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in all public classrooms has also been held up in court as legal challenges continue.

The Texas board voted 8-7 in favor of implementing the Bible lessons, with the materials expected to appear in classrooms as soon as the 2025-2026 school year.

THE TEXAS EDUCATION BOARD VOTED FRIDAY TO APPROVE THE INCLUSION OF BIBLE-BASED LESSONS IN PUBLIC ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, A MOVE THAT ALIGNS WITH EFFORTS BY OTHER REPUBLICAN-LED STATES TO INTRODUCE MORE RELIGIOUS CONTENT INTO PUBLIC EDUCATION.

THE CURRICULUM, WHICH IS OPTIONAL FOR SCHOOLS TO ADOPT, WILL COME WITH FINANCIAL INCENTIVE— WITH SCHOOLS OFFERED $60 PER STUDENT—IF THEY CHOOSE TO IMPLEMENT THE BIBLE-BASED CURRICULUM.

THE NEW CLASSROOM MATERIAL, CREATED BY THE TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY, INCLUDES LESSONS CENTERED ON CHRISTIAN TEACHINGS, SUCH AS STORIES FROM THE BOOK OF GENESIS AND MORAL PRINCIPLES LIKE THE GOLDEN RULE.

SUPPORTERS SAY THAT INCORPORATING THE BIBLE INTO EDUCATION ENRICHES STUDENTS’ UNDERSTANDING OF AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE.

OPPONENTS ARGUE THAT THE CURRICULUM COULD ALIENATE STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE RELIGIOUS BACKGROUNDS AND POSSIBLY VIOLATE THE FIRST AMENDMENT’S PRINCIPLE OF SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.

EARLIER IN THE WEEK WHEN THE PROPOSED BIBLE LESSONS WERE STILL UP FOR DEBATE –

MORE THAN 100 PEOPLE TESTIFIED AT A BOARD MEETING – MAKING THEIR ARGUMENTS FOR AND AGAINST.

WITH THE NEW CURRICULUM NOW PASSING THE TEXAS EDUCATION BOARD –

TEXAS WOULD BE THE FIRST STATE IN THE COUNTRY TO IMPLEMENT BIBLE LESSONS INTO PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN THIS MANNER –

ACCORDING TO THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.

BUT THAT DEPENDS ON WHETHER THE BIBLE LESSONS WILL FACE LEGAL CHALLENGES FROM THOSE AGAINST THE IDEA.

IN OKLAHOMA – STATE OFFICIALS HAD A SIMILAR PUSH TO INCORPORATE BIBLE LESSONS – A LAWSUIT WAS FILED AND NOW THE STATE SUPREME COURT IS INVOLVED.

AND IN LOUISIANA A LAW TO PLACE THE 10 COMMANDMENTS INSIDE ALL PUBLIC CLASSROOMS HAS ALSO BEEN HELD UP IN THE COURTS WHILE LEGAL CHALLENGES PLAY OUT.

THE TEXAS BOARD VOTED 8 TO 7 IN FAVOR OF IMPLEMENTING THE BIBLE LESSONS.

THE MATERIALS COULD BE IN CLASSROOMS AS SOON AS NEXT SCHOOL YEAR.
