FRIDAY NIGHT, THE NATIONAL WORLD WAR ONE MEMORIAL PLANS TO UNVEIL ITS CROWN JEWEL– ‘A SOLDIER’S JOURNEY’.
THE BRONZE PANEL SCULPTURE IS AN ASTOUNDING 58-FEET-LONG.
AND FEATURES 38-FULL-SIZED FIGURES.
IT TELLS THE STORY OF A WORLD WAR ONE SOLDIER HEADING ON A EPIC JOURNEY; FROM LEAVING HOME, THROUGH THE HORRORS OF BATTLE AND FINALLY RETURNING BACK TO HIS FAMILY.
THE ARTIST, SABIN HOWARD, SAYS HE SEE THIS SCULPTURE AS A ‘MOVIE IN BRONZE,’ NOT JUST THE SOLDIER’S EXTERNAL BATTLE BUT ALSO THE INTERNAL SCARS OF WAR- ECHOING THE EXPERIENCES OF VETERANS FROM AFGHANISTAN, IRAQ, VIETNAM, AND BEYOND.
HOWARD USED ACTUAL VETERANS AS MODELS, CAPTURING THEIR RAW EMOTIONS AND THE HAUNTING SHELL-SHOCK.
HOWARD SAYS WHILE THE SCULPTURE HONORS THE 116-THOUSAND U.S. SOLDIERS WHO DIED IN WORLD WAR ONE, IT’S A UNIVERSAL STORY THAT MODERN DAY VETERANS WILL RECOGNIZE AS THEIR OWN.
HE USED OVER 12-THOUSAND PHOTOS OF MODELS IN UNIFORM, AND SPENT700 HOURS TO CRAFT THE INTRICATE DETAILS OF THE SOLDIER’S JOURNEY.
THE NEW $44 MILLION-DOLLAR MEMORIAL IS LOCATED IN PERSHING PARK ACROSS FROM THE WHITE HOUSE VISITOR CENTER.
STARTING FRIDAY, THE PUBLIC WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE THIS TRIBUTE UP CLOSE, IN THE HEART OF THE NATION’S CAPITAL.
