Karah Rucker: DEFORESTATION IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST IS REACHING RECORD HIGHS.
AND ENVIRONMENTALISTS WORRY IT’S PUSHING THE ‘LUNGS OF THE PLANET’ TO THE BRINK OF COLLAPSE.
BRAZILIAN GOVERNMENT DATA RELEASED TODAY SHOWS OVER 15-HUNDRED SQUARE MILES OF RAINFOREST WERE CLEARED OUT IN THE FIRST SIX MONTHS OF 20-22.
THAT’S AN AREA FIVE TIMES THE SIZE OF NEW YORK CITY.
Manoela Machado | Wildfire and Deforestation Researcher, Oxford University: “This is very bad. The first semester in the Amazon is when we have the rainy season, so we shouldn’t be seeing these high numbers. Historically the peak of the deforestation shouldn’t be happening while is raining, so we have a combination of a drier climate with more motivation to deforest. So this is extremely bad news.”
Karah Rucker: MEMBERS OF GREENPEACE PLACE THE BLAME ON BRAZILIAN PRESIDENT JAIR BOLSONARO WHO THEY SAY HAS AN ‘ANTI-ENVIRONMENTAL AGENDA’.
BOLSONARO IS UP FOR RE-ELECTION THIS NOVEMBER.
HOWEVER- ACTIVISTS WARN EVEN IF HE LOSES- LOGGERS- RANCHERS AND LAND SPECULATORS WILL TRY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE LAX PROTECTIONS BEFORE LAWS CHANGE.
