THE PEOPLE BEHIND SOME OF THE TALLEST BUILDINGS IN THE WORLD ARE IMAGINING A NEW PURPOSE FOR SKYSCRAPERS.
MAJOR ARCHITECTURE FIRM SKIDMORE, OWINGS AND MERRILL, ANNOUNCED A PARTNERSHIP THIS YEAR TO DEVELOP AN ENERGY STORING TOWER THAT COULD REACH MORE THAN THREE THOUSAND FEET.
THINK OF IT LIKE A BUILDING-SIZED BATTERY..
THE ARCHITECTS ARE WORKING WITH THE POWER STORAGE COMPANY ENERGY VAULT TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
THE STRUCTURE WOULD USE AN ELECTRIC MOTOR TO STORE POWER BY ELEVATING AND THEN LOWERING A SERIES OF GIANT BLOCKS.
THE BLOCKS GATHER UP POTENTIAL ENERGY AS THEY’RE RAISED AND THEN RELEASE IT AS THEY FALL, CONVERTING THAT POWER INTO ELECTRICITY.
THIS WOULD ALL OCCUR IN HOLLOWED OUT STRUCTURES WITHIN THE BUILDING THAT RESEMBLE ELEVATOR SHAFTS-
STILL LEAVING ROOM FOR COMMERCIAL OR RESIDENTIAL TENANTS TO OCCUPY THE TOWER.
EXPERTS HAVE RAISED QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER THIS PROJECT CAN BE REALIZED.
POINTING TO THE STRUCTURAL CHANGES THAT WOULD NEED TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THE ADDED WEIGHT OF AN ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEM IN A SKYSCRAPER.
BUT, BOTH ENERGY VAULT AND THE ARCHITECTES ARE CONFIDENT IN THEIR DESIGNS.
WITH THE TWO COMPANIES NOW ON THE SEARCH FOR DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS TO HELP TURN THEM INTO REALITY.
