THIS WEEKEND WE WILL BE FALLING BACK AN HOUR…
AS DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME COMES TO AN END.
THE DEBATE TO END DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME — OR MAKE IT PERMANENT — IS ALWAYS RENEWED TWICE A YEAR WHEN AMERICANS GET READY TO RESET THEIR CLOCKS.
BUT THIS YEAR WE WERE AS CLOSE AS EVER TO ENDING THE TIME CHANGE.
LEGISLATION **UNANIMOUSLY PASSED THE SENATE IN MARCH TO STICK TO DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME.
THE ‘SUNSHINE PROTECTION ACT’ THEN MADE ITS WAY OVER TO THE HOUSE.
WHERE IT HAS STALLED OUT…YET TO BE TAKEN TO A VOTE.
THERE ARE TWO STATES THAT WON’T BE CHANGING THEIR CLOCKS THIS WEEKEND.
ARIZONA AND HAWAII BOTH DON’T OBSERVE THE TIME CHANGE.
THERE’S CERTAIN BENEFITS TOUTED BY STICKING TO THE SAME TIME YEAR-ROUND.
WHEN WE FALL BACK…THERE ARE DAYS IN THE WINTER WHEN THE SUN SETS AROUND 4 P-M.
SOME STUDIES REVEAL LESS SUNSHINE IN THE EVENING LEADS TO AN INCREASE IN SEASONAL DEPRESSION AND KEEPS KIDS FROM PLAYING OUTDOORS LONGER.
THERE IS ALSO A NEW STUDY THAT REVEALS CAR COLLISIONS WITH DEER INCREASE BY ALMOST 20 PERCENT IN THE FIRST WEEK AFTER WE FALL BACK WITH MORE NIGHT-DRIVING.
IF THE SUNSHINE PROTECTION ACT ISN’T VOTED ON BY THE END OF THE YEAR…THEN THE BILL IS DEAD. BUT WITH THE DEBATE ONGOING FOR DECADES…IT’S SURE TO BE RENEWED IN A NEW EFFORT WHEN IT’S TIME TO CHANGE OUR CLOCKS AGAIN.
