BP HAS DECIDED IT’S DONE WITH U.S.-BASED WIND TURBINES.
THE BRITISH OIL AND GAS GIANT INSTEAD REPORTEDLY DECIDING TO REFOCUS ON WHAT IT KNOWS BEST.
THIS CHANGE IN STRATEGY COMES AFTER A SIMILAR SWITCH UP IN THE COMPANY’S LEADERSHIP.
THEIR NEW CEO PLACING AN EMPHASIS ON OIL AND GAS OPERATIONS-
FOLLOWING INVESTOR DISCONTENT OVER BP’S PREVIOUS RENEWABLE ENERGY TRANSITION PLAN.
UNDER FRESH MANAGEMENT THEY HAD ALREADY PUT A PAUSE ON DEVELOPING NEW WIND POWER INFRASTRUCTURE-
WHILE PRIORITIZING INVESTMENTS IN OIL AND GAS.
CURRENTLY, BP OPERATES ONSHORE WIND ENERGY ASSETS ACROSS SEVEN DIFFERENT U.S. STATES-
GENERATING ABOUT 1.7 GIGAWATTS OF ELECTRICITY, ENOUGH TO POWER OVER HALF A MILLION HOMES.
THE COMPANY’S PORTFOLIO IN THIS SECTOR HOLDS AN ESTIMATED VALUE OF ABOUT 2 BILLION DOLLARS.
IN A RELEASE ANNOUNCING THEIR INTENTION TO DIVEST FROM WIND-
BP INDICATED FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF ITS ONSHORE RENEWABLE POWER WOULD BE INTEGRATED WITH ITS SOLAR ENERGY BRANCH.
THE COMPANY SAYS IT STILL BELIEVES THAT CLEAN POWER IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF THEIR WORK-
BUT IS MAKING THIS MOVE TO ENSURE OPERATIONS ARE SIMPLER, MORE FOCUSED, AND OF HIGHER VALUE.
