BROADWAY WILL PAY TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDARY JAMES EARL JONES THIS THURSDAY. THE LIGHTS OF THE ICONIC GREAT WHITE WAY WILL DIM IN HIS HONOR. FOLLOWING HIS PASSING EARLIER THIS MONTH AT THE AGE OF 93.
THE BROADWAY LEAGUE ANNOUNCED THE TRIBUTE, ACKNOWLEDGING JONES’ PROFOUND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STAGE.
OVER HIS ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER, HE WON TWO TONY AWARDS, ONE FOR ‘THE GREAT WHITE HOPE’ AND THE OTHER FOR HIS ROLE IN ‘FENCES.’ IN 2017, HE RECEIVED A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, RECOGNIZING A CAREER THAT SPANNED NEARLY TWO DECADES OF BROADWAY PERFORMANCES.
BEYOND BROADWAY, JAMES EARL JONES WAS KNOWN FOR HIS POWERFUL VOICE AND MEMORABLE ROLES IN FILM AND TELEVISION, INCLUDING HIS ICNOINC PORTRAYAL OF DARTH VADER IN THE STAR WARS FRANCHISE. BUT FOR THEATER LOVERS, JONES WAS A FORCE ON STAGE.
JONES MADE HIS BROADWAY DEBUT IN SUNRISE AT CAMPOBELLO IN 1958, AND OVER THE YEARS, TOOK ON ROLES IN PRODUCTIONS LIKE ‘ON GOLDEN POND, GORE VIDAL’S THE BEST MAN, DRIVING MISS DAISY, AND THE ICEMAN COMETH.
AS THE LIGHTS DIM, THE BROADWAY COMMUNITY WILL COME TOGETHER IN A MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE FOR A MAN WHOSE PERFORMANCES WILL BE CHERISHED FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.
