Broadway theaters to lower lights in tribute to James Earl Jones

Broadway will pay tribute to the legendary James Earl Jones this Thursday, Sept. 26. The lights of the iconic Great White Way will dim in his honor, following the actor’s passing earlier this month at the age of 93.

The Broadway League announced the tribute, acknowledging Jones’ profound contributions to the stage. Over his career, Jones won two Tony awards, one for “The Great White Hope,” and the other for his role in “Fences.”

In 2017, he received a lifetime achievement award, recognizing a career that spanned nearly two decades of Broadway performances. Beyond Broadway, the actor is known for his powerful voice and memorable roles in film and television, including his iconic portrayal of Darth Vader in the “Star Wars” franchise, and Mufasa in both iterations of “The Lion King.”

Jones made his Broadway debut in “Sunrise at Campobello” in 1958, and over the years took on roles in productions like “On Golden Pond,” “Gore Vidal’s The Best Man,” as well as “Driving Miss Daisy” and “The Iceman Cometh.”

Jones was known as a force on stage, and as the lights dim on Thursday, the Broadway community will come together in a moment of remembrance for a man whose performances will be cherished for generations to come.

OVER HIS ILLUSTRIOUS CAREER, HE WON TWO TONY AWARDS, ONE FOR ‘THE GREAT WHITE HOPE’ AND THE OTHER FOR HIS ROLE IN ‘FENCES.’ IN 2017, HE RECEIVED A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD, RECOGNIZING A CAREER THAT SPANNED NEARLY TWO DECADES OF BROADWAY PERFORMANCES. 

BEYOND BROADWAY, JAMES EARL JONES WAS KNOWN FOR HIS POWERFUL VOICE AND MEMORABLE ROLES IN FILM AND TELEVISION, INCLUDING HIS ICNOINC PORTRAYAL OF DARTH VADER IN THE STAR WARS FRANCHISE. BUT FOR THEATER LOVERS, JONES WAS A FORCE ON STAGE.
