CBP: Migrant rescues, encounters at US-Mexico border break records

Full story

The U.S.-Mexico border crisis continues to produce record-breaking statistics. Last year, more than two million migrant encounters unfolded at the U.S.-Mexico border, marking the most encounters ever recorded by the United States Customs and Border Protection.

More migrants than ever are also relying on federal agents to rescue them as they attempt to cross dangerous terrain and rivers to get across the border. According to the newly released CBP data, the number of migrants rescued at the border has more than quadrupled in two years. 5,336 migrants were rescued in the fiscal year 2020. In 2021, 12,857 migrants were rescued, and in 2022, a record-high 22,000 migrants were rescued.

The numbers serve as a testament to the dangers migrants trek through to get to the U.S. and a warning to migrants that the journey could cost them their lives.
