There’s less than a month remaining in the federal government’s fiscal year. It ends September 30th. So now that congress is back in session, members need to act fast to pass a continuing resolution and avoid a government shutdown. A continuing resolution keeps funding at its current levels. But the the White House is proposing these emergency additions: 11.7 billion dollars in economic and security assistance for Ukraine, 22.4 billion for Covid including testing and research for the next round of vaccines, 3.9 billion for the monkeypox response, In addition to funds for natural disaster relief.
But before Republican Senator John Kennedy gives his approval, he has some questions.
Kennedy, R-Louisiana: First I want to know what happened to the Ukraine aid that we already voted for. I think that coupling those issues is a cynical attempt to divide people in the congress.
Senior Democratic leadership is also considering adding a provision in the continuing resolution to codify same sex marraige. A bill to legalize same sex marraige at the federal level already passed the house on a bipartisan basis.
Senator Dick Durbin, D-Illinois: “Clarence Thomas put this on the table. This is not an imagination. The fact is he said that this was an issue the court was going to consider again in the future. We take that statement very seriously from a Justice on the highest court in America.”
Regardless, Durbin said the goal is to vote on a same sex marraige bill before the midterm elections. Straight from DC, I’m Ray Bogan.
