Detroit weekend shootings, US dollar value, nuclear watchdog in Ukraine

On August 29, 2022, a Detroit shooter is in custody after four separate shootings on Sunday, the U.S. dollar’s value has climbed to a 20-year high, and the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog is set to go to Ukraine’s plant under Russia’s control.

Detroit shooter kills three, arrested – A suspect in a series of seemingly random shootings in Detroit was arrested. Four shootings happened Sunday morning. Three of the four shooting victims died.

“This did not need to happen,” Detroit Police Chief James White said in a statement. “Once again, Detroiters are reeling after lives were senselessly taken at random from our community. We mourn their loss and pray for those fighting for their lives at this hour. There are more questions than answers, but Detroiters can sleep peacefully tonight knowing this suspect is off the streets.”

U.S. dollar value at a 20-year high – The U.S. dollar climbed to a 20-year high against other major currencies on Monday. It comes just days after the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s speech last week. He said the fed would raise rates as high as needed and keep them there “for some time” to help bring down inflation.

Nuclear watchdog traveling to Ukraine –  The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog International Atomic Energy Agency announced Monday a team of experts are on the way to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant located in Ukraine. Their arrival is expected later this week. Further details of the trip were not immediately available.

The plant has been the site of attacks amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Russia’s takeover and nearby shelling has caused international concern of potential nuclear disaster.
