THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT SAYS MILLIONS OF AMERICANS HAVE FALLEN VICTIM TO A SOPHISTICATED HACKING SCHEME ORCHESTRATED BY CHINESE NATIONALS.
THE ALLEGED HACKERS ARE ACCUSED OF CYBER ESPIONAGE AND INTERFERENCE IN CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE – MEANT TO TARGET POLITICIANS, NATIONAL SECURITY OFFICIALS, JOURNALISTS AND BUSINESSES.
BOTH THE UK AND US GOVERNMENTS ACCUSE THE HACKING GROUP “ADVANCED PERSISTENT THREAT 31” – BACKED BY CHINA’S GOVERNMENT SPY AGENCY – OF CONDUCTING THE 14-YEARS-LONG CYBER-ATTACK CAMPAIGN.
ACCORDING TO US PROSECUTORS, THE HACKING RESULTED IN COMPROMISED WORK ACCOUNTS, PERSONAL EMAILS, ONLINE STORAGE, AND CALL RECORDS.
THE HACKERS ALLEGEDLY USED DISGUISED EMAILS, APPEARING TO BE FROM PROMINENT NEWS OUTLETS OR JOURNALISTS, CONTAINING HIDDEN TRACKING LINKS.
ONCE OPENED, RECIPIENTS’ INFORMATION, INCLUDING THEIR LOCATION AND IP ADDRESSES, WOULD BE SENT TO A SERVER CONTROLLED BY THE DEFENDANTS.
THIS DATA WAS THEN USED FOR MORE SOPHISTICATED TARGETED HACKING, COMPROMISING RECIPIENTS’ HOME ROUTERS AND OTHER DEVICES.
THE UK SAYS POTENTIALLY MILLIONS OF UK VOTERS’ INFORMATION HELD BY THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION MAY HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED.
ANALYSTS EMPHASIZED A SURGE IN CYBER-ATTACKS ATTRIBUTED TO CHINESE ACTORS, OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH THE COUNTRY’S INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES.
THE CHINESE EMBASSY IN WASHINGTON D.C. RESPONDED TO THE ACCUSATIONS, DENYING THE CLAIMS.
