‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill could ban sexual orientation, gender identity talk from Florida classrooms

Feb 10, 2022

A new bill would prevent teachers and students from discussing sexual orientation and gender identity in Florida classrooms. Critics have called this ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill dangerous and discriminatory because it could lead peers to treat some students differently. Supporters have contended there’s no need to mention sexual orientation and gender identity when students should be focused on math and science.

“A school district may not encourage classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in primary grade levels or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students,” the bill reads.

The bill does not clearly define what is “age-appropriate.”
