The Philadelphia Eagles fresh off a night of celebration, are a bit bleary eyed Monday morning – who can blame them? A shocking, dominating Super Bowl win over the two-time defending champs deserves a big party.
The Kansas City Chiefs had no answers for the Eagles on either side of the ball, Patrick Mahomes was under fire all night. He was sacked a season high 6 times, fumbled the ball and threw a pair of interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni spoke Monday morning about forcing Mahomes to play one of the worst games of his career.
“Our guys were consistently on the same page working as one out there for all the different looks that they got.” Sirianni said. “Do you defeat blocks, do you tackle well, do you take the football away and the fundamentals that require that. And our guys did that consistently all year.”
What a difference a year makes for Sirianni who was on the hot seat after a flame out to end 2023 when the Eagles lost 5 of their last 6 games and were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. Sirianni paid tribute to one of his more fiery players Monday morning, wearing the high school jersey of wide receiver AJ Brown.
“Thankful for the guys we have on this football team, the special players, the special people that we have on this football team.” Sirianni said.
One of those special players is quarterback Jalen Hurts, the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player after throwing for 221 yards, rushing for 72 more and posting three total touchdowns.
A validating performance for a guy who kept a picture of his Super Bowl 57 loss as the screen saver on his phone for two years.
“As a team we want to look back and say we made everything worth it, that’s the commitment, the time, the effort everything that we did. But I wouldn’t be here without that journey and that’s something that I embraced along the way and I think it’s something to continue to build on ”
Speaking of building, the Eagles have a few notable free agents including star linebacker Zach Baun and pass rusher Josh Sweat both of whom were dominant in the Super Bowl. 15-year veteran Brandon Graham could also decide he wants to play another year. They may have to replace offensive coordinator Kellen Moore who is expected to be the New Orleans Saints next head coach.
That said, it looks like the Eagles may just re-load this offseason. No surprise they are the current Vegas favorites to repeat as champions over the Chiefs, Bills and Ravens.
