SEVERAL NEW WEBSITES WITH NAMES SUGGESTING THEY’RE AMERICAN LOCAL NEWS OUTLETS — HAVE EMERGED IN RECENT WEEKS – HOWEVER – THEY ARE ACTUALLY RUSSIAN CREATIONS AIMING TO SPREAD RUSSIAN PROPAGANDA ALONGSIDE REAL NEWS STORIES — ACCORDING TO A REPORT FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES.
THE NAMES OF THE SITES INCLUDE “D-C WEEKLY, NEW YORK NEWS DAILY, CHICAGO CHRONICLE, AND MIAMI CHRONICLE.”
THE SITES MIMIC GENUINE AMERICAN JOURNALISM BUT EXHIBIT SIGNS OF BEING FRAUDULENT IN NATURE, WITH INCOMPLETE SECTIONS AND THE USE OF PLACEHOLDER TEXT.
THERE ARE AT LEAST FIVE OF THESE FAKE NEWS SITES IN TOTAL – WHICH REPRESENT A TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT IN RUSSIAN EFFORTS TO INFLUENCE PUBLIC OPINION IN THE UNITED STATES DURING A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION YEAR.
EXPERTS AND OFFICIALS BELIEVE THE CAMPAIGN IS LINKED TO THE LATE YEVGENY PRIGOZHIN – AN ASSOCIATE OF RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN – WHO PREVIOUSLY CONTROLLED THE INTERNET RESEARCH AGENCY – BEFORE DYING IN A PLANE CRASH LAST AUGUST. OFFICIALS BELIEVE PRIGOZHIN’S MEDIA EMPIRE INTERFERED IN AMERICA’S 2016 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION… AND THAT THE KREMLIN CONTINUES DEDICATING RESOURCES AND TIME TO THE INFORMATION WARFARE.
THESE WEBSITES, ALL USE WORDPRESS AND SIMILAR DESIGNS – AND MIX REAL NEWS WITH PROPAGANDA TO APPEAR CREDIBLE. BY MIMICKING REAL NEWS OUTLETS, THEY AIM TO DECEIVE UNSUSPECTING READERS WHO TRUST LOCAL NEWS SOURCES.
EXPERTS WARN THAT THESE TACTICS ARE LIKELY A PRELUDE TO INTERFERENCE IN THE UPCOMING ELECTION CYCLE.
