THERE’S A NEW LOOK FOR LICENSE PLATES IN FLORIDA
A COILED RATTLESNAKE ALONGSIDE THE WORDS *DON’T TREAD ON ME* – IT’S KNOWN AS THE GADSDEN FLAG
AND CARRIES A LONG SHIFTING HISTORY- SO WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?
THE MODERN RENDITION WAS CREATED AT THE START OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION BY CHRISTOPHER GADSDEN – A PROMINENT LEADER IN THE CONTINENTAL ARMY DURING THE AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR
HE TOOK INSPIRATION FROM IMAGERY OF RATTLESNAKES WHICH WERE CONSIDERED A DISTINCTIVELY AMERICAN CREATURE THAT WOULD ONLY STRIKE IN SELF DEFENSE
THE IMAGE BECAME A BANNER FOR COLONISTS – AT WAR WITH THEIR BRITISH OPPRESSORS.
BUT OVER THE YEARS IT’S TAKEN ON NEW MEANING
IT’S BEEN USED COMMERCIALLY BY NIKE AND THE PHILADELPHIA UNION, A MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER TEAM.
IT’S ALSO BEEN EMBRACED BY POLITICAL GROUPS LIKE THE TEA PARTY AND MILITIAS AS A SYMBOL AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT – IT WAS EVEN FLOWN BY PROTESTERS AT THE U.S. CAPITOL ON JANUARY 6TH
WHILE CRITICS SAY IT’S A SYMBOL OF INTOLERANCE BECAUSE OF HOW ITS BEEN CO-OPTED BY DIFFERENT GROUPS – OTHERS ARGUE IN TODAY’S CONTEXT *IT IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT*
TODAY THE GADSDEN FLAG IS AVAILABLE ON LICENSE PLATES IN FLORIDA AND 11 OTHER STATES
