Jimmie Johnson: THE CITY OF GRAND RAPIDS IS RE-LIVING AN OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING FROM EARLIER THIS MONTH.
NEW VIDEO WAS JUST RELEASED SHOWING THE MOMENTS LEADING UP TO THE DEADLY CONFRONTATION.]
26-YEAR-OLD PATRICK LYOYA WAS SHOT AND KILLED.
THE OFFICER PULLED OVER LYOYA FOR DRIVING WITH A LICENSE PLATE THAT DID NOT BELONG TO THE VEHICLE.
VIDEO SHOWS LYOYA RUNNING FROM THE OFFICER — WITH THE BRIEF FOOT CHASE LEADING TO A STRUGGLE OVER A TASER.
Eric Winstrom, Grand Rapids police chief: “From my view of the video, so this is not a conclusion, because I don’t know what other information is out there, but it looks like that they were struggling over the Taser for about 90 seconds.”
THE STRUGGLE ENDED WHEN LYOYA WAS SHOT IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD.
THE CITY’S NEW POLICE CHIEF RELEASED SEVERAL VIDEOS WEDNESDAY IN AN EFFORT TO INCREASE TRANSPARENCY AFTER PROTESTS OVER THE SHOOTING GREW EARLIER THIS WEEK.
THOSE PROTESTS CONTINUED FOLLOWING THE VIDEO’S RELEASE.
MICHIGAN STATE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE SHOOTING — WITH A PROSECUTOR SET TO DECIDE IF THE OFFICER WILL BE CHARGED.
THAT OFFICER — WHO HAS NOT BEEN IDENTIFIED — IS CURRENTLY ON PAID LEAVE.
